Background / History
Childhood and Isolation
Kakashi lost his mother in early childhood and was raised by Sakumo. His father recognized his extraordinary intelligence, ninjutsu aptitude, and physical ability, but village duties frequently kept Sakumo away from home. Kakashi learned to cook and look after himself while waiting for his father’s return 30 35 58 59.
In Sakumo’s recollection of his previous life, a forgotten birthday marked a turning point. Kakashi stayed awake waiting for him, became seriously ill after spending the night outside, and eventually stopped waiting altogether. His disappointment developed into withdrawal, fewer smiles, and an increasingly indifferent manner 58 59.
Sakumo’s Disgrace and Meeting Koki
After Sakumo abandoned an S-rank mission to save his comrades, Kakashi struggled to reconcile the Academy’s teachings with his feelings for his father. He had been taught to sacrifice everything for the village, yet could not understand why saving comrades deserved condemnation. His confusion became so painful that he began resenting Sakumo and avoiding his own feelings 28 29.
Koki’s public defense of Sakumo challenged that conflict. After hearing Koki call his father an admirable ninja and trustworthy companion, Kakashi introduced himself with unusual nervousness and held onto Koki’s hand during their greeting. Once Sakumo abandoned his suicide plans, Kakashi embraced Koki and cried over what he had endured 28 29 31.
Learning that the rumors were being deliberately spread turned Kakashi’s distress into anger. Sakumo urged caution, while Koki promised that neither the Hatake family nor the persecuted Uchiha had to face their difficulties alone. Kakashi responded by promising to grow stronger and protect Koki 31 32 33.
Joining Koki’s Household
Kakashi’s first visits exposed him to a warmth he was unaccustomed to receiving. He apologized for his earlier assumptions about the Uchiha and behaved formally toward Mikoto, whose kindness left both him and Obito unsure how to respond 34 35.
After seeing Obito welcomed into the household, Kakashi asked Sakumo for permission to stay there too. Returning to his own empty home had become unbearable after experiencing life with Koki’s family. Sakumo agreed, recognizing both his son’s loneliness and his own failures as a father 58 59.
Kakashi subsequently became one of Koki’s regular instructors. Although reluctant to hurt him, he eventually fought seriously so that Koki could understand his weaknesses. After losing, Koki requested one or two hours of unrestricted sparring each day, which Kakashi happily accepted 94 95.
The Attack on Koki and Pursuit of Danzo
When Obito brought the gravely injured Koki to safety, he placed him in Kakashi’s arms before collapsing. Kakashi later helped Obito and Shisui care for Koki in the hospital, but his fear and grief hardened into fury toward Danzo 145 157.
Kakashi sought out a Root base he had previously discovered during a mission. He understood that attempting to assassinate Danzo alone was likely suicidal, but prepared to attack anyway. Sakumo intercepted him before he could act 158 160 161.
Recognizing that Kakashi would not willingly abandon his revenge, Sakumo entrusted him with the White Fang Tantō, embraced him, and knocked him unconscious. He then left to confront the danger himself 162.
Afterward, Kakashi brought Tsunade to examine Sakumo’s wounds. He also reconciled with Obito through a promise to become stronger and protect Koki together. When Koki later questioned him about reports of Danzo’s death, Kakashi denied responsibility; the supplied account does not establish that Kakashi killed him 173 174 179.
Missions and Wartime
Over the following three years, Kakashi continued undertaking missions with Obito and Rin while remaining closely involved with Koki’s household. He and Obito celebrated one homecoming by arranging fireworks and giving Koki their accumulated mission pay and bankbooks 210 213.
A later mission left Kakashi exhausted and injured while facing Kumogakure ninja led by Yugito. Obito shielded him and urged him to remember their promise to protect Koki. After regaining consciousness and helping the badly wounded Obito recover, Kakashi joined him in dispelling the mist and preparing to confront Yugito together 274 277.
During Koki’s service in the Land of Rain, Kakashi maintained contact through a brief letter intended to reassure him. After Koki returned home, Kakashi and Obito confronted him about Sasori’s claim to be his lover; Koki denied the claim 302 334.
Appearance
Kakashi has silver-white hair, dark eyes, and a habitual expression that others find stern or distant 28 30 58.
- Face mask: Covers the lower half of his face; his early outfit includes close-fitting black clothing 28.
- “Dead-fish eyes”: His usual impassive gaze contrasts with the brighter, more expressive way he looks at Koki 28 51.
- Unmasked appearance: Koki is stunned by his beauty when Kakashi removes his mask 63.
- Voice: Usually cool and restrained, but noticeably gentler when addressing Koki 52.
Personality
Kakashi initially appears proud, aloof, and dismissive of less accomplished peers. Obito remembers being mocked by him at the Academy, while Kakashi originally looks down on Might Guy despite Sakumo’s warning about Guy’s potential. He can nevertheless reconsider his judgments and apologize sincerely 22 26 34.
His reserve conceals loneliness and a strong desire for affection. Around Koki, he becomes visibly nervous, easily embarrassed, and willing to ask for companionship. Jealousy disrupts his composure particularly sharply: believing that Koki and Obito have a romantic date planned leaves him openly heartbroken 29 33 58 111 112.
As an instructor, Kakashi balances protectiveness with an understanding that Koki must survive real combat. He suppresses his desire to shield Koki from every hardship and patiently continues teaching even when Koki struggles with techniques he considers elementary 94 95 96.
Threats to those he loves can override his usual caution. His attempt to reach Danzo shows that he is capable of pursuing revenge despite recognizing the danger to himself 157 160.
Abilities & Skills
Lightning Release: Chidori
An A-rank technique Kakashi creates by combining chakra nature transformation and shape transformation, concentrating white Lightning Release chakra in his palm 52 53.
- Attacks through a high-speed thrust.
- Produces a sound resembling a thousand chirping birds, giving the technique its name.
- Its high-speed approach creates a dangerous visual limitation; Kakashi recognizes the Sharingan as an effective complement 52 53.
Lightning Blade
Kakashi’s improved version of Chidori uses blue electricity and greater destructive power. He develops it with Koki’s protection in mind and asks him to name it 52 53.
- Concentrates Lightning Release chakra in the hand for a penetrating charge.
- Risks blurred vision and counterattack during the high-speed approach.
- Requires the Sharingan to reach its full potential, according to Kakashi’s explanation.
- Is later used by Koki to pierce Yugito’s Tailed Beast Cloak; this is Koki’s demonstrated application, not a feat performed by Kakashi 52 280.
Fundamental Ninjutsu and Shurikenjutsu
Kakashi defeats Koki through precise use of the Three Basic Techniques, thrown weapons, and prepared misdirection rather than relying only on powerful attacks 93 95.
- Uses clones to draw attacks onto false targets.
- Combines successive shuriken volleys with concealed ambushes.
- Controls the pace of a spar until Koki becomes exhausted.
- Emphasizes fundamentals as the basis of effective combat 93 95 96.
Taijutsu and Blade Combat
Kakashi combines speed, controlled movement, and accurate timing with short-blade attacks 30 93.
- Identifies openings during rapidly changing exchanges.
- Coordinates blade strikes with clones and ranged weapons.
- Recognizes the effectiveness of Guy’s taijutsu through firsthand combat experience 52 93.
Stealth, Perception, and Fieldcraft
Kakashi moves quietly through crowds and forest terrain and has cultivated detailed knowledge of Konoha’s layout 158.
- Uses terrain, hiding places, and awareness of traps to support mission survival.
- Identifies possible entrances and sentry positions while observing the Root base.
- Has limits: Sakumo approaches close enough to seize his arm without being detected 158 160 161.
Instruction and Domestic Skills
- Teaching: Provides persistent, detailed instruction in basic ninjutsu and agrees to daily serious sparring with Koki 95 96.
- Combat guidance: Alongside Shisui, teaches Koki to remain calm and seek opportunities to survive desperate encounters 139.
- Cooking: Learns to prepare substantial meals from childhood and regularly helps in Mikoto’s kitchen 59 210 232.
