Background / History

Childhood and adoption

Shisui lost his parents and relatives on the battlefield not long after his birth. Neighbors occasionally cared for him when he was small, but he eventually lived alone, managing his own cooking, laundry, and household. He supported himself through clan assistance and occasional low-level missions 12 54.

As Kagami Uchiha’s descendant, he felt responsible for honoring his ancestor’s name. The competitive, power-focused atmosphere among Uchiha children weighed on him, while the possibility of another war drove him to train harder to protect both Konoha and his clan 10.

After observing Koki helping elderly people and feeding stray cats, Shisui began quietly imitating his kindness. He also watched Koki’s morning training until Koki confronted him. Shisui apologized, asked to become friends, gave him a flower, and taught him shuriken throwing 10 11.

Koki brought him home for dinner, where Mikoto welcomed him into the household. Shisui accepted the invitation to stay and was subsequently identified as Fugaku’s adopted son. His adoption also frustrated Danzo’s plan to recruit and indoctrinate him through Root 12 15 47.

Changing loyalties

Koki explained the tensions between Konoha and the Uchiha, including the clan’s internal divisions and the problems surrounding the Military Police Force. Shisui quickly understood the political stakes and sided with him 15.

His earlier willingness to give everything for the village changed further after witnessing hostility toward the Uchiha. When Koki insisted that they must put their own lives first rather than sacrifice themselves unquestioningly for Konoha, Shisui solemnly agreed 27 28.

The fate Koki hopes to prevent

Koki remembers a different course of events in which Shisui tried to prevent an Uchiha coup by using Kotoamatsukami to change Fugaku’s thinking. Hiruzen disclosed the plan to Danzo, who ambushed Shisui and stole his right eye. Shisui entrusted his remaining eye to Itachi before taking his own life in the Naka River 11 44.

These events belong to Koki’s recollections, not Shisui’s documented fate in the current storyline. Koki deliberately brings him closer to the family to change that outcome, later warning him to conceal any future Mangekyo ability and never trust Danzo 12 81.

Personality

Shisui is gentle, considerate, and disciplined. Before formally meeting Koki, he already admired—and began copying—his habit of helping others. He takes training seriously, rises before dawn, and initially measures his responsibilities in terms of protecting his clan and village 10 11.

His affection for Koki makes him unusually indulgent. He struggles to refuse Koki’s requests, holds back in sparring to avoid hurting him, and accepts blame for their duel when Mikoto becomes upset over his injuries. Despite his childhood self-sufficiency, illness exposes his desire to be comforted and cared for 78 85 92.

That affection also brings insecurity and jealousy. He is hurt when Koki chooses to spend time with Itachi, distances himself while struggling with his feelings, and trains desperately to vent his frustration. Seeing Koki’s closeness with Kakashi causes him particular distress; later, he privately enjoys Kakashi experiencing similar jealousy 87 98 99 100 112.

His protectiveness can become ruthless. After Koki is critically injured, Shisui’s usual gentleness gives way to cold anger and a determination to punish whoever was responsible 151.

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Shisui possesses a Three-Tomoe Sharingan and identifies genjutsu as one of his specialties 27 243.

• Defeats Koki by making him believe he has won their duel, when Shisui is actually holding a kunai to his throat 80 81.
