Background / History

Tsunade was living outside Konohagakure with Shizune when Hyuga Kei located her at a casino. Kei sought her Senju blood for research; after she refused both payment and intimidation, he exploited her hemophobia by having puppets burst blood packs around her. Immobilized by the sight of blood, Tsunade was unable to prevent him from drawing two bags of her blood before Jiraiya arrived and drove Kei away. 28

Jiraiya persuaded her to return to the Leaf Village, arguing that her hemophobia made her vulnerable and promising an explanation for Danzō's past actions. Tsunade agreed, intending to confront the village leadership herself. 28

During a crisis involving the Sound Village, Tsunade accepted the Hokage's hat and swore to serve as the Fifth Hokage. 64 She later consolidated her authority by reclaiming the directorship of the Leaf Village Hospital, establishing a personal Anbu force through Kakashi's former connections, and refusing to defer to the village elders. 73
