Background / History

Early life

Lin Yu was a transmigrant raised in Shenzhou in 1997. His parents changed the character in his name from “rain” to “feather” because they believed his infrequent smiles were inauspicious. Two years later, a trip abroad ended in a Honkai disaster that killed both parents and left him orphaned. Rita Rossweisse adopted him, and he subsequently lived alongside Bianca Durandal. Their deaths became the foundation of his lasting hatred for Honkai. 341

After becoming involved with Schicksal, Lin Yu presented himself as an ordinary agent while secretly seeking battlefield experience and greater authority to pursue revenge against Honkai. His early survival and abilities were augmented by the System, which supplied skill books, equipment, and draw rewards. 2 109

Rise as an anti-Honkai combatant

Lin Yu first distinguishes himself during the Changkong City crisis. He refuses to exploit Raiden Mei’s vulnerable state, instead pushing her toward self-reliance while quietly safeguarding her welfare. 15 17 He later fights Siegfried, using Royal Guard and Mirror Mind to absorb and return a Honkai Energy attack. 23

His victory over the Herrscher of Thunder is not solely his own achievement: he relies on the HSN Serum and assistance from others. Lin Yu nevertheless becomes known as a combatant capable of containing Herrscher-level disasters. 44 130 He subsequently defeats Chiyou, the Herrscher of Death, the Herrscher of Wind, and other major Honkai threats through a combination of preparation, energy control, and psychological warfare. 159 203 326 461

Fu Hua recognizes both Lin Yu’s potential and the danger posed by his fixation on revenge. She teaches him Tai Xu Sword Qi to stabilize his chaotic energy, but his rapid progress leaves him increasingly vulnerable to obsession and the influence of his Stigmata. 104 174 176

Herrscher awakening and conflict with Otto

Lin Yu’s suppressed memories and divided psyche eventually lead to his awakening as the Herrscher of Constraint. His “vengeful spirit” personality becomes a Herrscher Persona, while his newer personality remains in control of his body. 342 Within his Constraint Barrier, he can suppress opponents’ energy while retaining the use of his own powers and Divine Keys. 342 343

After Otto’s death, Lin Yu succeeds him as Schicksal’s Archbishop. He unites Schicksal and Anti-Entropy more closely and organizes humanity’s resistance against Honkai. 450 He later confronts the source of Honkai alone, suppresses it, and returns after follow-up measures have been prepared. 574

Lin Yu spends time stabilizing the Dominion Theater, helping the dead fulfill lingering wishes. Using the Herrscher of Death’s Authority of Creation, he resurrects his sister, Lin. 512

Interstellar travels

After resolving his responsibilities at home, Lin Yu begins exploring other worlds through the System. He arrives at Herta Space Station during an Anti-Matter Legion attack, saves Arlan, repairs the station’s systems, and becomes an honored guest of Herta. 540 542 548

On the Xianzhou Luofu, he helps Jing Yuan expose and eliminate Phantylia, defeating her clone, locating her main body, and destroying her remaining fragments. 588 591 595 He later continues using his power and resources to aid vulnerable worlds, including Belobog. 605

Lin Yu is consistently described as handsome, with an above-average presence that draws attention even when he attempts to remain inconspicuous. 2 110

Despite his cold presentation, Lin Yu is protective of companions and civilians. He heals allies, intervenes during Honkai outbreaks, and takes responsibility for dangerous tasks that others cannot safely handle. 176 387 His concern is genuine, but it is inseparable from his compulsion to confront Honkai personally.

His defining flaw is self-destructive obsession. Lin Yu claims to fear death, yet repeatedly enters crises alone, accepts severe injury as part of his plans, and prioritizes destroying Honkai over his own safety. 109 236 466 Ling characterizes him as profoundly self-centered in this respect: even when he accepts help, he first seeks to solve the problem by himself. 466 467

Lin Yu is also highly manipulative when necessary. He studies opponents’ motives, exploits psychological openings, and is willing to deceive allies or stage his own injuries to mislead enemies such as Otto. 164 236 591
