Background
Sovereign Legions were established after the Sovereigns and Gods became formally separated. Sovereigns could not attack God-level beings without cause, so they formed legions to safeguard their interests and act on their behalf. 72
The legion system became a major instrument in the competition for faith. Soldiers were dispatched to Material Planes to establish magic academies, recruit Saints and Gods, and spread their Sovereign's faith. 87 96
Organization and Ranks
| Position | Requirement / Standing |
|---|---|
| Ordinary soldier | Initially, at least a Mid-level God was required; in a later era, Gods served as the lowest-ranking soldiers. 10 156 |
| Squad Leader | High-level God. 10 156 |
| Company Commander | Four-star Devil. 10 |
| Battalion Commander | Five-star Devil. 10 |
| Deputy Legion Commander | Six-star Devil. 10 |
| Legion Commander | Seven-star Demon. 10 |
| Plane War Commander | Asura Prefect-level expert. 10 168 |
Recruitment and Service
- Legions generally recruited Saints and Gods aligned with their Sovereign's element. 87
- Material Plane recruits could enter a corresponding Sovereign Legion by cultivating magic and helping establish magic academies. 96
- The Blood Peak Lord God's legion guarded Infernal Realm planar teleportation arrays and escorted Material Plane arrivals to tribes or cities. 24
- Sovereign's Emissaries could accompany legions as elite combatants. An Emissary with a Lord God Artifact could contend with Asura-level opponents even if their base strength was only at the Seven-star Devil level. 111
Battle Formations
Sovereign Legions train in coordinated battle formations that pool the power of many soldiers. These formations require prolonged discipline and training; a failed formation on the Plane War battlefield could result in dismissal from the field. 111 158
| Formation Scale | Documented Effect |
|---|---|
| Hundreds of Five-star Devils | Can kill a Six-star Devil. 111 |
| Tens of thousands of Five-star soldiers | Can threaten a Commander. 111 |
| More than 100,000 Six-star Devils | Can severely injure or kill a Paragon. 111 |
| Small formations of five or six High-level Gods | Can multiply the members' combat power severalfold. 158 |
Battle-formation knowledge is closely associated with legion service. When Shelley encountered bandits using such formations, she concluded that they were likely retired Plane War soldiers or commanded by a former Sovereign Legion captain or higher-ranking officer. 158
Plane Wars
Deployment and objectives
Sovereign Legions form the principal armies of Plane Wars. Victory requires breaching both galaxy passages and reaching the enemy's main base. Once deployed, soldiers cannot leave through the battlefield gate until the war ends. 111
Soldiers receive faction-specific badges upon entering the battlefield:
| Badge | Exchange value |
|---|---|
| 100 Soldier Badges | One drop of Sovereign Power. 111 |
| 100,000 Soldier Badges | One Lord God Artifact. 111 |
| 10 Commander Badges | One Lord God Artifact; cannot be exchanged for Sovereign Power. 111 |
Battlefield conditions
- Plane War space is exceptionally stable: Asura Prefects can distort it, but only Sovereign Power or Paragon-level strength can destroy it. 111
- Soldiers routinely use Sovereign Power during major engagements. 112 172
- Legion-scale battles create spatial rifts, which can kill combatants through collateral damage. 134 172
- Plane Wars also function as population control, since Gods have infinite lifespans while the Seven God Planes and Four Supreme Planes have limited capacity. 141
Restrictions and losses
Sovereign's Emissaries and a Sovereign's children may each receive only one Sovereign Artifact directly from their Sovereign. Additional Lord God Artifacts can be gained through Plane War badge exchanges. 113
When a Sovereign's Emissary dies, its position requires ten trillion years to restore under the Lord God Pact. The loss of multiple Emissaries can therefore cripple a Sovereign's influence among Gods for immense periods. 134 138
Notable Legions
Four Divine Beast Sovereign Legions
The Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise Legions are led by the patriarchs of their respective clans: Gaisleith Reading, Gus Ers, Tia Nemo, and Mokore Bowen. 24
During the Fire Element–Destiny Plane War, the four legions fielded more than twice the Destiny faction's number of soldiers. Gaia commanded the overall force, while the four clan leaders each guarded galaxy passages with their respective legions. 111
Their surprise full-scale charge annihilated the Destiny faction's legion before its reinforcements could enter the battlefield. 112
Star Sovereign Legion
Roy formed the Star Legion after declaring the Star Mist Sea under his protection. 98
Gaia was appointed commander of the Star Sovereign Legion and Sovereign's Emissary, with Atley as her deputy. 104 Gaia later resigned her command to prepare for the Plane War, after which Charles temporarily led the legion. 109 127
The legion's recorded strength after recent losses was:
| Personnel | Number |
|---|---|
| Seven-star Demons | 3 |
| Six-star Demons | 73 |
| Five-star Demons | 3,423 |
| Ordinary High-level Gods | More than 49,000 |
| Mid-level Gods | 560,000 |
Death Sovereign faction
The Death Sovereign's Plane War force included the legions of the Death Sovereign, Refining Fire Lord God, Skeleton Lord God, Cang Lan Lord God, Nine Nether Lord God, Undead Lord God, and North Bone Lord God. 134
Its veteran Emissaries were generally stronger than those of the opposing Destiny faction: nineteen Death-side Emissaries were Asura-level, while several also possessed both material-defense and offensive Sovereign Artifacts. 134
Angel Legions
Augusta's angel forces are biological weapons created through the Angel Reincarnation Pools of the Light God Plane. Angels can be reborn if their Angel Hearts are recovered and returned to a pool. 172 173
In the conflict against the Death and Star factions, angel legions fought without fear of death, detonating both Sovereign Power and Angel Hearts to inflict disproportionate casualties. 173
