Background

Ovilia and her younger sister were born to an ordinary industrial-world worker family. Both entered the Adeptus Mechanicus as apprentices, raising their family's status and securing basic life-extension treatment for their parents. Ovilia's decision to spend her own reward on her parents drew the attention of High Sage Belisarius Cawl, who accepted her as an apprentice because he valued her willingness to defy conventional Mechanicus priorities. 27

Ovilia advanced to Sage while her sister remained an Enginseer. With her mentor's tacit approval, Ovilia gave one of her own academic projects to her sister, allowing her to gain promotion as well. The assistance ultimately damaged their relationship: her sister regarded it as proof of Ovilia's superior ability, and the two became rivals. 27

After Cawl left the Mariupol Sector, factions within the Forge World persecuted Ovilia to seize the forge and knowledge he had left behind. She was stripped of her resources, deprived of the attendants and authority expected of a Sage, and nearly reduced to a stasis-bound living statue. Her sister led the purge publicly, but Ovilia understood that this intervention also protected her from a more lethal purge. 27

Exiled to Rostov II, Ovilia was nominally tasked with mining Blackstone. During the operation, she discovered an ancient xenos ruin—later identified as a Necron tomb—and sought the Planetary Governor's support for excavation. Chen Xi instead invoked his Inquisitorial authority to halt the work, recognizing the danger before she did. 6 7

Ovilia subsequently offered her knowledge and services to Chen Xi in exchange for support for her ecological research. When the opportunity arose to regain access to the Forge World and her former assets, she agreed to serve Chen Xi for thirty years rather than the ten she initially proposed. 8 34 35

Donya later returned Ovilia's technical staff, apprentices, and Adeptus Ministorum force to her following a cooperation agreement with Rostov II.
