Background / History

Mu Yue was already an orphan when his story began. He used this circumstance to fabricate a connection between his deceased parents and Uchiha Kagami, earning Shisui Uchiha’s trust without leaving living relatives able to contradict him. 2 At the same time, he discovered the Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal on his tongue, which prevented him from speaking about Root or Shimura Danzo without paralysis; he considered Danzo’s possible control over the seal a potentially fatal vulnerability. 3

He entered the Ninja Academy as a teacher and quickly cultivated a reputation as an unusually patient, effective instructor. After discussing Uchiha history with Shisui and giving him a Fire Release training manual, Mu Yue formally accepted Shisui as his disciple. 3 He later taught or trained Obito Uchiha, Might Guy, Kakashi Hatake, Nohara Rin, Asuma Sarutobi, Shizune, Anko, and others. His summer special training was credited with improving students more in one month than regular classes could in an entire semester. 12 115

Although he maintained the image of a loyal Root operative, Mu Yue deliberately managed Danzo’s perceptions. He submitted reports designed to imply Hiruzen Sarutobi’s favor while withholding sensitive information, and he used Root’s resources without revealing his true intentions. 117 466

In the Land of Rain, Mu Yue spread the ideals of Ninshu by resolving conflicts, teaching villagers practical knowledge, and helping ninja reconsider their responsibilities. He initially concealed his identity under the name Sōsuke, but disclosed it to Nagato because he refused to let every relationship within Ninshu rest on a false identity. 404 412 He ultimately became Ninshu’s leader while also serving as Konoha’s Fourth Hokage. 750 753
