Background / History

Di Kun and Zhou Jun originated as one being divided through divine powers and Dao techniques into a “one-body-two-life” existence. They live and act separately, but their thoughts and divine senses can converge; after their enlightenment at Mount Zhou, outsiders can no longer detect their shared origin unless they reveal it themselves 19 20.

During this enlightenment, Di Kun identifies himself with the True Self, stating, “My past life nurtured me; this life makes me.” Zhou Jun represents the Original Self, while Di Kun becomes the rational, orderly side that evaluates and restrains Zhou Jun’s more impulsive proposals 20 52.

His early cultivation focused narrowly on Earth Veins. Descending Mount Zhou, Di Kun realizes that mountains and rivers themselves also hold creative potential, and that altering Earth Veins without understanding the greater balance of heaven and earth could have brought him close to disaster 21.

Di Kun later reveals himself as the first innate Earth Dragon to the Earth Dragon Clan. Accepted as their ancestor, he gains access to the Earth Virtue Hall and discovers the clan’s fragment of the Creation Jade Butterfly, which greatly improves his ability to comprehend, deduce, and scheme 45 46 48.

Following the Ferocious Beast Kalpa, he strengthens Wuyi Mountain, transforms it into a grotto-heaven world connected to the Earth Veins, and eventually attains his Dao Fruit there 80 88. As the Earth Dao World begins to be rejected by the Primordial Land, Di Kun prepares to repay his karma and leave the world by returning his Dao to it 108 111.

He ultimately dissipates his Earth Dao Fruit into heaven and earth, establishes the Five Paths of Reincarnation, and leaves his True Spirit to suppress the process until the world is complete 117. Later accounts describe this sacrifice as the means by which he fully extricates himself from the Primordial Land’s karma 143.

Personality

Di Kun is analytical, cautious, and intensely strategic. He constantly examines hidden motives, particularly those of Hongjun, Luohu, and the Chaos Gods and Demons, and prefers to establish contingencies rather than rely on trust 30 56 61.

As the True Self, he embodies rationality and order. Zhou Jun commonly proposes radical actions, while Di Kun decides whether they should be carried out and attempts to prevent their plans from spiraling beyond control 52.

Despite his preference for concealment and survival, Di Kun is capable of decisive aggression. During the Dao Discussion Duel, combat reveals both his battle lust and his willingness to confront stronger opponents directly rather than continue avoiding danger 85 86.

His later actions show a willingness to sacrifice personal advancement for the Primordial Land. Establishing reincarnation requires him to disperse his Earth Dao Fruit and bind his True Spirit to maintaining the new cycle 117.

Appearance

Di Kun can conceal his presence completely, but when he reveals himself to the Earth Dragon Clan, his aura is described as ancient and overwhelmingly powerful 45.

  • His gaze is repeatedly described as sharp, torch-like, or hawk-like 20 45.

  • He possesses an original form associated with his identity as the first innate Earth Dragon 45.
