Background

Quill was born on Earth and lost his mother at the age of seven. Yondu then took him into the Ravagers, where he grew up among pirates, criminals, and mercenaries. His mother's music and the portable player she left him remained his most important connection to Earth. 818

Yondu personally raised and trained Quill, teaching him to shoot and investing in his combat potential. Within the Ravagers, Quill developed top-tier combat skills, strategic thinking, and physical ability. 215 After leaving the group, he was considered a traitor under Ravager rules, though Yondu repeatedly allowed him to escape. Their relationship later softens when Quill realizes Yondu is neither simply an enemy nor the monster he imagined. 215 216

While attempting to sell the Orb of Power, Quill clashes with Gamora and becomes entangled with Rocket, Groot, and Jason. The encounter becomes the foundation for his new group of companions. 1215 1216 He later meets Leo on Xandar and quickly feels an unusual sense of trust toward another Earthling; Quill gives Leo his communicator number and offers future help. 319 1144

Appearance

Quill is listed at 188 cm and 175 lbs in an information profile. 157 Following Leo's energy infusion, his physical body becomes approximately 1.93 meters tall, heavily muscular, and far more refined than his earlier slightly overweight build. 474

  • Usually wears practical Ravager-style clothing, including a leather suit. 342
  • Uses a full-coverage combat helmet capable of supporting breathing and vision in space. 1216
  • Can manifest a white Light of Life energy body separate from his original physical body. 498
  • Can enlarge his projected form into a giant dozens to hundreds of meters tall. 472 499

Personality

Quill is a boastful, flirtatious rogue with a habit of chasing small profits, showing off new weapons, and making jokes in dangerous situations. His familiarity with black-market equipment and his insistence on checking weapons carefully reflect the survival instincts he developed among Ravagers. 342 1141

Despite his irresponsibility on the surface, he is deeply sentimental. His mother, her music, and the memories attached to his old Walkman are painful subjects he avoids discussing. He also becomes strongly attached to the companionship he finds with Rocket, Gamora, Groot, Jason, and Leo after years of isolation. 818 943

Quill is impulsive, especially when confronting Ego, but he is also resilient. Even while overwhelmed by Ego's control and power, his memories of his mother and concern for his friends continue to drive his resistance. 463 472
