Background / History

Origin and Human Transformation

Gu Yue Ling was born an Imperial Auspicious Beast and received the respect and worship of other Soul Beasts from birth. Her privileged position left her less familiar with ordinary Soul Beast habits than Xiao Wu, who had spent more time wandering the forest 193.

She transformed into a human early by sealing her Eye of Destiny, sacrificing access to its spiritual abilities. To explain her unusual knowledge and bloodline to humans, she claimed to come from a reclusive clan that had inherited dragon-type Martial Souls and studied dragonkind for generations 190 230.

Joining Shrek Academy

After meeting Chen Feng and several classmates in Suotuo City, Gu Yue Ling appeared at their academy. She introduced herself, joined Chen Feng and Tang San for a cafeteria meal, and explained that she cultivated her bloodline rather than following the attribute path 116.

Flender tested her admission through a duel with Dai Mubai: lasting one incense stick would earn her a place, while defeating him would make her student leader. Dai Mubai narrowly won, but Flender accepted her after confirming that she met the age requirement 117.

Gu Yue Ling arrived without money or basic supplies. Ning Rongrong covered her one-hundred-gold-coin tuition, while Zhu Zhuqing lent her money and took her shopping for necessities. Learning that arena victories offered prize money gave her an immediate interest in practical combat classes 117 119.

Training and Return to the Star Dou Great Forest

Grandmaster recognized her exceptional Soul Power control and assigned her to pound sticky rice inside a covered barrel without damaging its lid or moving the container. This training led her to develop Hidden Strength, a technique for transmitting force through solid objects 149 150 171.

Her spar with Chen Feng exposed the weaknesses of relying on brute force. Unable to land effective blows against Tai Chi Swordplay, she became frustrated and tried to grab his sharpened sword. Grandmaster stopped the exchange, demonstrated the danger, and secured her acknowledgment that she had acted rashly 169.

After defeating the Shi Brothers and reaching level forty, she returned to the Star Dou Great Forest. There, she informed Di Tian about Chen Feng’s research into obtaining Soul Rings and Soul Bones without killing Soul Beasts. Di Tian warned that the research threatened entrenched human interests, urged her to protect Chen Feng when possible, and suggested helping him reach level ninety-nine 171 174.

She requested a strength-specialized dragon Soul Beast to assist with her next ring. Upon returning to the academy as a Soul Ancestor, she demonstrated her ten-thousand-year fourth skill and explained that the Ring Expansion Method avoided spiritual shock but did not remove the need to withstand the ring’s enormous energy 175 180.

Expeditions and Soul Beast Cooperation

In the Death Desert, Gu Yue Ling secured the cooperation of a Great Rock Snake tribe and its sixty-thousand-year Great Steel Snake leader. She asked the leader to provide a suitable young snake for Ning Rongrong’s Soul Ring Experiment 161.

During the Sunset Forest expedition, she detected an Evil Serpent and urgently alerted the teachers. Its ability to pollute dragon bloodlines explained her hostility toward it. Later, she recognized that a fleeing Ironclad Earth Dragon was pregnant and challenged the Holy Dragon Sect heir who intended to cut it open for a feast; she also fought his bodyguards during the confrontation 189 190 198 199.

In the Extreme North, her dragon authority brought an Ice Fang Dragon into cooperation with the group, helping Ning Rongrong obtain a ten-thousand-year ring. Her unexplained nighttime absence from its cave deepened Tang San’s suspicion that she was a transformed Soul Beast, though he chose not to expose her 210 212.

Tournament and Later Research

When Chen Feng became trapped in an illusion, Gu Yue Ling proposed using a gem-type spiritual Spirit Bone and Spiritual Connection to let Ning Rongrong enter his illusion. Her sealed Eye of Destiny prevented her from investigating it personally 230.

Against Spirit Hall’s team, she and Dai Mubai held the Evil Blade Lord at bay. Hidden Strength allowed her attacks to penetrate its defenses, while her taunts deliberately unsettled Yan and Xie Yue. She later joined Dai Mubai, Xiao Wu, and Chen Feng in destroying the fusion form 250 251.

After the championship, Chen Feng assigned her the Wind Chasing Left Leg Bone. She subsequently helped shape the group’s plans by opposing an exclusively Extreme North academy site, proposing that Hydra choose a leader, and identifying an Earth Dragon cub’s congenital brain deficiency before a successful human–Soul Beast formation experiment 255 258 273 296.

Appearance

  • Hair: Golden-blond 116 119.
  • Eyes: Normally light violet; after consuming the Earth Dragon Golden Melon, she could manifest burning-looking golden dragon eyes accompanied by dragon might 157.
  • Martial Soul manifestation: Golden radiance surrounds her, her figure grows taller, and a Golden Lion phantom appears behind her. The phantom’s brow has an indistinct feature 117.
  • Fourth-skill manifestation: Two golden dragon heads form around her hands like gauntlets 180.

Personality

Gu Yue Ling is proud, unruly, and intensely competitive. She prefers durable opponents and direct exchanges of strength, finding evasive styles deeply frustrating. After her spar with Chen Feng, she deliberately used the Shi Brothers as “punching bags” before finishing them with Hidden Strength 119 169 171.

Despite her temper, she can admit mistakes when confronted with evidence. She apologized after Grandmaster explained why grabbing Chen Feng’s sharpened blade during combat could cost her a finger 169.

Her bluntness often becomes teasing. She dismissed Zhu Zhuqing’s suggested romantic prospects without hesitation and jokingly suggested that she might be more interested in girls. She explicitly denied having romantic feelings for Chen Feng at that time 119.

Initially unfamiliar with human etiquette and earning money, she became more tactically adaptable through her classmates. By the tournament, she was deliberately provoking enemies rather than relying solely on physical force. In broader team discussions, however, she usually listened rather than spoke 116 119 250 258.

Abilities & Skills

Golden Lion Martial Soul

A dragon-blooded Beast Spirit suited to frontline combat 116 180.

  • Provides enough raw strength that Chen Feng could not match her directly during their spar, even with his weighted sword and physical training 169.
  • Her physical constitution places her among the team’s strongest Vanguards, alongside Chen Feng and Dai Mubai 180.
  • Originally lacked a movement or acceleration skill, making it difficult for her to reach distant enemies 183 191.

First Spirit Skill: Golden Lion Body Protection

Covers her body in dense golden light for protection and enhanced physical combat 117 169.

  • Allowed her to charge through Dai Mubai’s surrounding winds and continue attacking 117.
  • Hardened her defenses enough that touching Chen Feng’s stationary sharpened blade produced a metallic sound without injury 169.
  • Does not make her safe from catching that blade during a full-speed exchange; Grandmaster warned that the impact could cut her hand or sever a finger 169.

Third Spirit Skill: Lion’s Roar

A spiritual, large-area crowd-control attack that briefly blanks or stuns nearby minds 117 168 230.

  • Affected both Dai Mubai and spectators during her admission duel 117.
  • Was prohibited during her training match with Chen Feng because Grandmaster considered it capable of deciding the fight immediately 168.
  • Decided the battle against the Heaven Dou Royal Team when Bai Chenxiang carried her into its backline. She stunned nearby opponents and eliminated Tang Ying and Ye Lingling 186.
  • Remains usable despite the sealing of her Eye of Destiny 230.

Fourth Spirit Skill: Golden Dragon Heads

Her ten-thousand-year fourth ring forms dragon heads around both hands 180.

  • Functions as protective gauntlets and strengthens her blows 180.
  • Can launch the heads as projectiles; one demonstration destroyed a large tree and left a crater 180.
  • Partially compensates for her lack of closing speed, but does not fully solve that weakness 208.

Self-Created Technique: Hidden Strength

Transmits force through an intervening object into the target beyond it 171.

  • Developed from Grandmaster’s specialized Soul Power control training 150 171.
  • Sent force through the Shi Brothers’ shields, leaving both brothers numb and unable to continue 170 171.
  • Penetrated the Evil Blade Lord’s armor during the tournament 251.
  • Requires an effective point of contact: Chen Feng’s yielding, deflecting swordplay gave her no useful resistance through which to transmit it 171.

Imperial Auspicious Beast Authority

Her true identity commands extraordinary deference from Soul Beasts 174 193.

  • Soul Beasts in the Star Dou Great Forest bowed or withdrew as she passed 174.
  • A sixty-thousand-year Great Steel Snake lowered itself before her and offered her a place on its back 161.
  • Used dragon authority to call an Ice Fang Dragon toward the group 210.
  • Her status does not give her complete knowledge of ordinary Soul Beast behavior 193.

Eye of Destiny and Spiritual Knowledge

Sealed her Eye of Destiny to assume human form early, losing access to its spiritual abilities 230.

  • Could not personally inspect the illusion trapping Chen Feng 230.
  • Nevertheless knew a Spiritual Connection technique and explained how Ning Rongrong could use a spiritual Spirit Bone to enter the illusion 230.

Borrowed Skill: Swift Thunder

Chen Feng’s charging skill was allocated to her through the group’s skill-sharing arrangement 208.

  • Chosen specifically to address her inability to close distance quickly 208.
  • Intended to let her exploit her offensive strength by charging into enemy backlines 208.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Earth Dragon Golden Melon — Immortal herb that strengthened her dragon bloodline and contributed to her six-level increase to level thirty-nine 157 161.
  • Wind Chasing Left Leg Bone — Assigned to her from the team’s championship Soul Bone rewards 255.

Relationships

  • Chen Feng — Classmate, sparring rival, and later Hydra’s chosen leader. His evasive tactics initially infuriated her, but she adopted his use of psychological warfare and devised a method to rescue him from an illusion 169 230 250 273.
  • Ning Rongrong — Friend and two-on-two partner. Paid her tuition, calls her Ling’er with permission, and received her help during Soul Ring experiments 117 161 170 171 210.
  • Zhu Zhuqing — Helped her settle into the dormitory and lent her money for necessities. Initially questioned whether she intended to pursue Chen Feng 119.
  • Dai Mubai — Admission-test opponent and fellow Vanguard. Their clashing Beast Spirits and similarly arrogant temperaments caused mutual discomfort, though they later fought effectively together against the Evil Blade Lord 117 119 251.
  • Grandmaster — Teacher who recognized her Soul Power control, devised the training behind Hidden Strength, and corrected her dangerous combat habits 149 150 169 171.
  • Di Tian — Senior Soul Beast confidant. Discussed Chen Feng’s research with her, urged her to protect him, and agreed to find a suitable dragon Soul Beast for her fourth ring 174 175.
  • Xiao Wu — Fellow transformed Soul Beast whose identity Gu Yue Ling inferred. Xiao Wu independently suspected Gu Yue Ling’s nature but avoided confronting her without certainty 174 193 231.
  • Tang San — Helped select her immortal herb. Later suspected her true nature and refrained from alerting the group during her unexplained absence in the Extreme North 157 212.
  • Bai Chenxiang — Teammate who carried her past enemy defenses, enabling Lion’s Roar to break the Heaven Dou Royal Team’s formation 186.
