Background / History
Hermione first encounters Horatio Quibble aboard the Hogwarts Express while searching for Neville Longbottom’s missing toad, Trevor. Frustrated that Horatio had already studied under Nicolas Flamel before enrolling, she introduces herself and promises that she will surpass him after entering Hogwarts. 7
At Hogwarts, Hermione is sorted into Gryffindor and develops a competitive academic dynamic with Horatio. She successfully performs the Levitation Charm after his demonstration and is the first first-year in their Transfiguration class to alter her matchstick. 13 14
Although Hermione initially tries to keep Horatio from breaking rules, she repeatedly becomes involved in his schemes. She agrees to complete his homework in exchange for his food, only later discovering that the quill he gave her automatically copies her work for him. 10 20 She also helps Harry and Ron investigate the Philosopher’s Stone and joins them in descending through the trapdoor guarded by Fluffy. 24 27
After Horatio criticizes her know-it-all behavior and she is left crying in the girls’ restroom, a troll attacks Hogwarts. Horatio rescues Hermione from the troll, becoming a turning point in their relationship. 20 21 By the end of the first year, she has become close friends with Harry, Ron, and Neville, and earns Gryffindor fifty House points for solving a logic challenge amid magical fire. 20 30
During Horatio’s imprisonment in Azkaban, Hermione frantically researches Ministry law in an effort to free him. When he later visits her, she admits that she was hurt because he had excluded her from his plans, then resolves to stand beside him even if he is a “Demon King.” 80 84
Personality
Hermione is highly studious, ambitious, and competitive. She reacts strongly to Horatio’s early magical experience and consistently tries to prove herself through classwork, including Charms and Transfiguration. 7 13 14
She is strongly rule-oriented and concerned with House points. Hermione reports Horatio’s attempt to teach Unforgivable Curses to Gryffindor students and repeatedly scolds him for skipping detention or causing trouble. 16 17
Despite her bluntness and occasional know-it-all attitude, Hermione is loyal and protective of her friends. She worries when Horatio disappears during crises, studies legal methods to help him, and supports Harry, Ron, and Neville as their friendship develops. 20 54 80
Hermione is also principled in her concern for house-elves. She researches their condition to help Dobby and continues advocating for their rights even when Horatio argues that their present roles protect them from worse treatment by wizarding families. 59 170
