Background / History
Ancient origins
Medicine Spirit emerged from an alchemy furnace on Mount Buzhou. Although he says he had not yet awakened there, he retains an attachment to the mountain and expresses a desire to return 570 796.
His former master forged an exceptionally durable Alchemy Furnace from materials gathered across the world. Medicine Spirit’s memories of him are incomplete: he recalls a figure who existed before the Three Realms, stood on equal footing with the Immortal Emperor, and disappeared while attempting to verify something. He later identifies his former master as a Daluo Golden Immortal, despite earlier recollections placing that master above the realm 507 510 645.
Meeting Ning Qi
Ning Qi discovers Medicine Spirit inside an Immortal Elixir while seeking a way to survive a deadly poison. Their first encounter is hostile: Ning Qi threatens to eat him, and Medicine Spirit unsuccessfully tries to escape by controlling the pill 504.
Under pressure, Medicine Spirit explains how the Immortal Elixir, Ten-Thousand Year Crimson Lotus, and Crimson Fire Immortal Art must be used together. Ning Qi supplies another, lower-quality Immortal Elixir for him to inhabit, while Medicine Spirit reads the furnace inscriptions and recites the cultivation art 505.
Ning Qi subsequently assures him that they are partners. After Ning Qi absorbs his former master’s Bloodline Power, Medicine Spirit insists on calling him “Master,” despite Ning Qi initially objecting 507 508.
Companion and healer
Medicine Spirit quickly becomes Ning Qi’s source of ancient knowledge, translating inscriptions and identifying treasures. Ning Qi also values his company, reflecting that their conversations make the journey less lonely 516 517.
His loyalty becomes clear when the Bronze Cauldron leaves Ning Qi unresponsive. Medicine Spirit exhausts his own Spiritual Qi and life aura trying to revive him, then sends Bloodline Power into Ning Qi’s brow, producing a response within the dark space trapping him 511.
He later helps Li Xiangrou recover from an aphrodisiac, accompanies Ning Qi through Devil Race territory, and assists in exploring the Boundary Sea’s ruins 563 591 624.
Becoming a Sword Spirit
After reaching peak Golden Immortal strength, Medicine Spirit volunteers to replace Heavenly Tribulation’s missing Sword Spirit. Shi Xiaokun recommends that he first assimilate Sword Qi and learn the associated sword art; Medicine Spirit begins training inside the Time-Difference Formation 715 716.
The sword initially rejects him violently. With Ning Qi guarding him inside its body, Medicine Spirit uses Life Essence and the Heavenly Profound Sword Art to overcome the resistance. His successful integration brings a lightning tribulation, which he endures while repeatedly restoring his damaged body. Ning Qi then names him “Heavenly Tribulation” 721 722 723.
He proves his new abilities against the Sword Spirit Commander, operating a Sword Formation the Commander himself cannot control and collecting golden Origin Sword Qi. Later, after the Sword Spirit King’s defeat, he refines Heavenly Tribulation’s Sword Soul 733 749 750.
Relinquishing Heavenly Tribulation
Medicine Spirit’s eagerness to explore eventually causes friction within the group. He leaves with both Heavenly Tribulation and the Flying Vessel, depriving Ning Qi of them during a dangerous encounter. His investigation of a sword tomb also ends with Ning Qi having to rescue him 772 777 781.
Ning Qi orders him to hand Heavenly Tribulation to Tian Shang so the originally unified swords can merge. Medicine Spirit accepts that Tian Shang is better suited to them and returns to staying beside Ning Qi as a restorative companion. He retains his increased strength and swordsmanship even without Heavenly Tribulation’s True Form 781 782.
He subsequently gains a shadow servant through Corpse Blood and Ning Qi’s mark. When Alchemist Xu later questions his identity, Ning Qi denies that he is a Medicine Spirit to protect his origins: legend claims that refining one can grant the potential to reach Immortal Emperor 783 795 796.
Appearance
Medicine Spirit’s visible body matures as his strength increases 504 715 723 751.
- Initial form: An infant-like figure curled inside an Immortal Elixir, speaking in a childish voice 504.
- Early traveling form: A tiny person no larger than a palm, frequently perched on Ning Qi’s shoulder 522 715.
- After refining Life Essence: A larger child 715.
- After becoming a Sword Spirit: A half-grown boy whose piercing Sword Qi makes him resemble a drawn blade; he later withdraws that outward sharpness 723.
- After Sword Soul refinement: A youth with a noticeably stronger physique and presence 751.
Personality
Medicine Spirit begins as wary and fearful of being consumed. Even after agreeing to accompany Ning Qi, he asks for reassurance that Ning Qi will not eat him when danger arises. His caution coexists with persistent curiosity: he wants to investigate treasures, watch public celebrations, and see nearby excitement 507 509 538 570.
He becomes deeply attached to Ning Qi and proud of serving him. His concern extends to Ning Qi’s friends, whom he treats as his own, and to vulnerable strangers. He worries about endangered cultivators and sympathizes with servants who appear confined to a private estate 522 563 598 763.
His growing power makes him bolder and less indecisive, but also more prone to showing off. He initially responds defensively when Shi Xiaokun and Tian Shang criticize his recklessness, then admits his mistake to Ning Qi and promises to consider others’ safety. His love of food and lively behavior persist despite his physical growth 749 750 757 781 782.

- Limit: His attempts to restore Ning Qi with life aura and Spiritual Qi fail during the Bronze Cauldron incident; Bloodline Power is needed to reach him 511.

- Can inhabit another Immortal Elixir if it contains enough Spiritual Qi and life force 505.

- Operates Sword Formations and collects an opponent’s Origin Sword Qi for later refinement 733.
- Slaughters a group of twisted monsters within a few breaths using Heavenly Tribulation 751.
- Retains swordsmanship after surrendering the sword’s True Form to Tian Shang 782.
Spirit-Body Concealment
His spirit nature allows him to hide from ordinary observers and shelter within Ning Qi 547 595.
- Becomes invisible and strikes an attacker without being seen 547.
- Hides inside Ning Qi’s abdomen or dantian 595 645.
- Lacks the “three souls and seven spirits” needed by the Bronze Mirror’s female soul to possess him 535.
- Limit: That failed possession does not make him immune to all forms of control; he later reports that a dark figure controlled him during a fight 781.
Flying Vessel Control
Medicine Spirit refines the vessel recovered beneath the swamp and becomes one of its pilots 720 725.
- Summons and activates the vessel after refining it 725.

- Pilots it at high speed through the Boundary Sea and accelerates away from a pursuing spore swarm 732 795.
