Cosmology
- Birthplace of worlds: Lesser Worlds, Spirit Realms, and worlds of higher levels all originate from the Boundary Sea 383.
- World distribution: Worlds appear as widely scattered spheres. Some are joined by passages, forming paired or multi-world configurations 391 453.
- Realm Walls: A world’s outer barrier keeps Boundary Sea power from invading and protects the conditions necessary for life and development 392.
- Continuing expansion: The Boundary Sea steadily encroaches on the remaining immortal realms. The Great Desolation Immortal Realm, once able to shelter other beings, has increasingly been forced to prioritize its own survival 465 467.
Geography
Known Environmental Regions
Ning Qi’s perception passes through the Gray Mist Zone, Blackwater Region, and Turbulent Flow Region when he follows a connection toward the Boundary Sea’s depths 430.
| Region | Characteristics |
|---|---|
| Gray Mist Zone | Surrounds worlds such as the Mountain and Sea Realm and Vast Origin Realm. Ning Qi judges that it cannot support the concentration of powerful beasts found in Sea Ancestor’s hidden prison 408. |
| Blackwater Region | A deeper, dark-water region beyond the Gray Mist Zone 393 430 433. |
| Turbulent Flow Region | Also described as World Sea Turbulence; contains vortices with powerful pulling and tearing forces 442 448 475. |
| Vortex-like Twisted Spaces | Unusual areas resembling a Spirit Realm’s Sea Eye. Feng Baihua’s scouting bees encountered Twisted Monsters inside one 383. |
Regional Divisions
- Extreme East Boundary Sea: The broader region containing Ning Qi’s home sector and the Great Desolation Immortal Realm 465.
- Sector 15: Identified by officials beyond Sage Ancestor’s Immortal Gate. Ning Qi and Sage Ancestor initially do not recognize the designation 469.
- Outer and core areas: The True Martial Spirit World lies on Sector 15’s outskirts. Ning Qi explains that worlds moving nearer the core can become subject to Immortal World battlefield assignments 589.
- Mapped neighboring sectors: Lin Chen possesses a projected map covering Sector 15 and several adjacent regions 496.
Energy and Rules
Spiritual Energy and World Growth
Boundary Sea Spiritual Qi is chaotic and disordered, but it supplies the external energy needed for a Lesser World to grow. Ning Qi proposes filtering it through a world’s existing Spiritual Qi or having cultivators refine it directly 238.
- Rule Sources: Hidden throughout the Boundary Sea. A Lesser World that acquires and integrates a Rule Source can become a Spirit Realm 246.
- Difficulty of collection: Natural Rule Sources are obscure and difficult to locate. Ning Qi instead uses orderly Rules obtained elsewhere as foundations for drawing corresponding power from the sea 246.
- Five Elements Divine Chains: Ning Qi places these outside the True Martial World to extract the Power of Rules and replenish its Rule Sources 301 360.
- Direct harvesting: His sword techniques eventually allow him to cut away portions of the Boundary Sea’s Rules and integrate them into his world 284 290.
Protection of Lesser Worlds
- Restricted descent: Knowing a Lesser World’s coordinates does not allow an Upper Realm to freely send overwhelmingly powerful cultivators into it. The Mysterious Turtle attributes this protection to the Boundary Sea Rules 212.
- Anchor-point methods: Life Poison can weaken a Lower Realm and establish internal anchors. Dao Seals formed through affected experts help open a World Passage from both sides 212.
- Passage limits: Such a passage still restricts entrants to cultivators below the Lesser World’s strongest combat power 212.
World Sea Energy and Immortality
| Interaction | Documented Effect |
|---|---|
| Exposure without adaptation | Ning Qi’s incarnation nearly loses its sanity upon leaving the Realm Wall 392. |
| Adaptation through World Sea Power | The incarnation stabilizes itself using power inherited from Ning Qi’s Reincarnated Body. Later, the sea treats Ning Qi as part of itself rather than invading him 392 442. |
| Immortal Gate rejection | World Sea Energy within Mountain Ancestor’s Buzhou Mountain Fragment interferes with his passage through the Immortal Gate 440 441. |
| Immortal discomfort | Mountain Ancestor and Sage Ancestor experience intense disgust toward the Boundary Sea after becoming immortals 443 474. |
| Dao Fruit protection | Wei Xian’s Dao Fruit shields his Immortal Body from World Sea Energy, reducing its effect on him 481. |
| Ning Qi’s alternative path | Rather than discard World Sea Energy and Limitless Evil Qi, Ning Qi develops Immortal-Demon Power by fusing opposing powers 463 464. |
Limitless Evil Qi
- A legendary destructive power associated with the Boundary Sea, capable of threatening a Spirit Realm’s birth and destruction 372.
- Ning Qi uses it to eliminate Twisted Monsters, making it a crucial countermeasure against creatures that can otherwise reform or transform their victims 443 446.
- Immortals react to it even more strongly than to ordinary World Sea Energy; Sage Ancestor experiences an instinctive urge to attack Ning Qi when exposed to it 463 474.
Inhabitants and Hazards
World Sea Ferocious Beasts
- Native beasts inhabit territories throughout the Boundary Sea. Those entering the newly formed War Domain include creatures comparable to Void Dao and Body Integration cultivators 302 383.
- Known examples include the Bee Demon Queen Feng Baihua, a black flood dragon, and tiger-, leopard-, wolf-, lion-, and eagle-like beasts subdued by Ning Qi 383.
- The War Domain offers a relatively stable environment that beasts reach from the chaotic sea, sometimes interfering with its territorial nodes 306.
- Much stronger specimens also exist: three beasts encountered during the inheritance expedition possess Taiyi Golden Immortal-level strength 739.
Twisted Monsters
- Lurk in unusual regions, including vortex-like Twisted Spaces 383.
- Can recombine after being cut apart. Monsters fought by Ning Qi and Zhao Yujun reform into ten creatures more than twenty times stronger than before 383.
- Can devour cultivators, transform them into their own kind, and grow stronger through the process 443 446.
- Can expose a world’s location to terrifying beings in the Boundary Sea. Sage Ancestor’s summoned monster army consequently threatens the True Martial Spirit World as well as its intended target 442.
- According to the Black-Haired Donkey’s mother, killing them inflicts a curse that makes nearby seawater boil, especially near deeper black water. The donkey does not observe this reaction around Ning Qi 393.
Boundary Beasts
Zhao Zhirou distinguishes two kinds of enormous, meteorite-like Boundary Beasts encountered near the Boundary Sea Graveyard 612.
| Kind | Identifying Trait | Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Non-aggressive | No horns | Do not attack the passing fleet; specimens range from several thousand to over ten thousand zhang in size 612. |
| Aggressive | Horned | Live in groups and are costly enough to fight that Zhao Zhirou recommends fleeing upon encountering them 612. |
- The two kinds belong to different clans and fight to the death when they meet 612.
Other Dangers
- Battle disturbances: Fighting can attract creatures from the surrounding sea. Sage Ancestor warns that battling outside the War Domain could endanger even himself and Sea Ancestor 391 478.
- Ruins and wreckage: Abandoned sites may contain Twisted Monsters, powerful corpses, traps, and concealed passages 749 751.
- Hostile cultivators: The self-described Death Warriors of the Boundary Sea capture people to refine into their army 587.
Travel and Navigation
| Method | Uses and Limitations |
|---|---|
| Flying Boats and Giant Ships | Carry travelers through the sea using protective light screens. Prolonged exposure can still cause severe discomfort despite screens and masks 491 494. |
| Boundary Sea Wormholes | Offer faster travel and some concealment from weak Twisted Monsters, but require high resource expenditure and careful coordinate checks 491. |
| Compasses and maps | Used to maintain bearings, fix coordinates, and navigate between sectors and destinations 491 496. |
| Unaided travel | True Immortals can cross the World Sea with their physical bodies, though they generally avoid unprotected exposure. Later passages explicitly describe Celestial Immortals flying through its void 460 641. |
| True Martial Hall | Originally capable of traversing the Boundary Sea and surviving independently within it. Its damaged condition and Ning Qi’s insufficient cultivation initially make this function unusable 216 217. |
| Bronze Cauldron | After obtaining its recognition, Ning Qi considers it sufficient protection to explore the Boundary Sea and escape Dao Bujin even if unable to defeat him 512. |
Notable Locations
| Location | Significance |
|---|---|
| True Martial Spirit World | Ning Qi’s world, located on Sector 15’s outskirts; it becomes the largest world in its immediate region after the Mountain and Sea Realm disappears 417 589. |
| War Domain | A shared battlefield created between the Mountain and Sea Realm and Vast Origin Realm using both realms’ power and Boundary Sea energy 301 302. |
| Great Desolation Immortal Realm | The strongest force in its stretch of the Extreme East Boundary Sea; a surviving remnant of the shattered Heaven Realm 465. |
| Boundary Sea Battlefield | A wider conflict zone involving defenses against Twisted Monsters, trials, inheritance searches, and fighting among Immortal World forces, the Devil Race, and other groups 573 595 638. |
| Boundary Sea Graveyard | A former Boundary Sea Dynasty stronghold and dynastic graveyard, containing extensive resources, weapons, and armor protected by fortresses, puppets, and mechanisms 612. |
| Scattered Buzhou Mountain Fragments | Remnants of the ancient shattered mountain. Their resonance draws rival holders and factions across the Boundary Sea 437 453 475. |
| Distant unidentified sites | Ning Qi briefly senses a starlit location, an endless abyss, and a golden divine city while extending his perception into the depths 430. |
