Power Progression
Chthon’s main body is Multiversal; the lower ranks below describe particular clones, incarnations, vessels, or temporary enhancements rather than a single uninterrupted cultivation path 376 513 2457.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Multiversal main body | 376 | Identified as the power behind Wanda’s tragic fate and nightmares. |
| Singularity Universe-level descent | 513 | Descends through the incomplete Dark God Altar. Andrew deliberately permits a weakened descent rather than risk additional sacrifices strengthening him. |
| Hell Power-enhanced manifestation | 517 920 | Draws power from the major Hells through the altar, restoring his magic and raising it further. No new named realm is specified. |
| Technology Magic enhancement | 1162 | Obtains a Magic Ring after months of conflict through Fate. Technology Magic substantially increases his strength, but also gives Andrew a tracking and interference route. |
| Emergency sacrificial enhancement | 1164 | His main body sacrifices a planet and its inhabitants to transmit power to the besieged clone. The inefficient transfer enables a final escape attempt. |
| Zeus-possessing vessel | 1548 | Suppresses Zeus’s Divine Soul and takes over his body, combining the vessel’s Divine Power with his own magic. |
| World-bound Skyfather fusion | 2367 2375 | Fuses with Scar using Dark Energy. The fusion is flawed and would revert upon leaving that world. |
| Chaos potion-enhanced fusion | 2375 | The fusion body’s aura increases severalfold. Chthon and Scar then divide control and pursue separate targets. |
| Full fusion with the Great Demon God | 3553 | Allows the summoned Great Demon God to channel its full power through his body. A concealed Twisted Soul immediately compromises the enhancement. |
Appearance
- Black mist: Frequently transforms his body into smoke or mist to evade attacks, reform, possess others, or escape 1548 2460 3226.
- Robes and ring: Wears robes and, after obtaining it, a Magic Ring on his index finger 1162 2645.
- Combat forms: Uses a giant demon-god form and a Six-Armed Giant manifestation 920 1163.
- Disguises: Assumes Hera’s appearance to infiltrate the Zeus Brothers; also impersonates Zeus while possessing his body 1550 2454.
- Forehead eye: Bears an eye associated with an enemy curse that he cannot perceive himself 1354 2540.
Personality
Chthon treats followers, soldiers, souls, and entire worlds as expendable resources. He sacrifices his own legions to power rituals and plans planetary upheavals when direct attacks prove insufficient. His alliances are similarly transactional: cooperation with Scar conceals an intention to seize the tree’s power, while cooperation with Demon repeatedly becomes an opportunity for extortion 1605 2131 2314 2343.
His pride is especially tied to his standing as the Ancestor of Dark Magic. He reacts angrily when allies question his curses and refuses to accept becoming a subordinate or a secondary combatant. Repeated defeats damage his confidence, but rarely extinguish his determination to continue fighting 3373 3374 3523.
Despite these boasts, Chthon is exceptionally cautious about exposing his true body. He prefers avatars, escape contingencies, and concealed trump cards; losing an avatar preserves the possibility of a later attempt. His reputation for breaking agreements makes even potential allies reluctant to trust him 1162 3446.
Abilities & Skills
Dark Magic and Curses
Chthon created the Black Magic recorded in the Darkhold and is described as one of the Multiverse’s foremost curse experts 2457 2805.
- Soul and body curses: Burns Skeleton Demon King’s body and soul with black flames, then transfers the curse to Andrew when Andrew intervenes 513.
- Substitute Curse: Exchanges himself with a prepared substitute, including the cursed Hades, to escape attacks 2460.
- Life-link curse: Connects his life to Andrew’s and attempts mutual destruction through suicide; Andrew cuts the fate-thread 920.
- Regeneration Curse: Makes a second head grow from Kara’s neck and controls it to disrupt her actions 3517.
- Pain amplification: Designs a controlling curse to cause intense suffering and increase its victim’s Negative Aura 3368.
- Limits: Cannot remove every curse affecting himself. He seeks outside expertise for the Ruby Curse and Chaos Curse despite his own mastery 2030 2031.
Sacrificial Magic
Sacrifice is the primary ability of Chthon’s Main Universe incarnation 2887.
- Converts flesh, blood, souls, life force, and other resources into ritual power 479 1726.
- In the Main World, can sacrifice people, landscapes, rivers, and ley lines; an Affiliated World sharply restricts these resources 1163.
- Sacrifices and seals his left hand to halve Soldier Boy’s Nuclear Energy Beam 1896.
- Converts Scar’s Despair Small World into a destructive Despair Sword 2457.
- Uses a Many-Eyed Demon God to reflect inflicted wounds onto Andrew. The technique requires sufficient sacrifices and has intervals or restrictions between attacks 2645.
- Creates an enormous skull from millions of smaller skulls representing lives taken during his occupation of Los Angeles 3424.
Fate Manipulation and Danger Perception
Chthon binds Wanda’s destiny to becoming the Scarlet Witch and attempts to make that transformation serve his Divine Descent 325 491.
- Battles Andrew remotely through the Power of Fate 1162.
- Senses danger at the level of fate, making him difficult to ambush without comparable Fate Magic 1162.
- Severs fate-based attacks during his duel with Andrew 514.
- His control is not absolute: Andrew exploits the Main Universe’s chaotic Fate to overlay and sever Wanda’s destined transformation 491.
Time and Space Magic
- Freezes time and space around the Dark God Altar during his descent 513.
- Opens spatial rifts, redirects attacks, and creates space-devouring mouths 2457 2459.
- Uses Time Stop while attempting to escape an attack on his main body 2221.
- Transforms his soul into ninety-nine Time-Space Nether Butterflies capable of transcending time and space 1164.
- Severe Spatial Interference and barriers can prevent an avatar from teleporting into the Depths of Hell 2314.
Summoning
Chthon summons entities and manifestations that attack, consume, or restrain his enemies 514.
- Big Mouth: Devours Black Hole Grenades and time, but cannot safely consume the River Styx; its obedience is also imperfect 514 920.
- God of Void: Begins destroying Cyttorak’s Crimson Chains before Andrew’s Particle Collider destabilizes it 514.
- Great Demon God projection: Uses soul-powered altars to summon a separate combatant, including against Hades and Andrew 3354 3550.
- His status as the Ancestor of Dark Magic lets him perform certain summons without the enormous sacrifices another caster would require 514.
Possession, Corruption, and Psychological Manipulation
- Possesses Zeus through black mist while leaving his Divine Soul suppressed within his consciousness 1548.
- Uses mental soundwaves to expose guilt, jealousy, and violent impulses in the mages maintaining his prison 1163.
- Implants a suggestion in the Headless Knight Commander that drives him to resist capture and self-destruct 2352.
- Corrupts followers through the Darkhold, turning practitioners into puppets used to conquer or sacrifice their universes 2805.
- Temporarily suppresses Ganahta’s contract with Andrew, but fails to make her betray him 1163.
- Has numerous methods of evading or breaking magical contracts, contributing to his poor reputation 1162 1164.
Regeneration and Avatar Survival
- Explodes into black mist and reforms from surviving fragments 1163.
- Can restore an injured incarnation by devouring followers if even a wisp escapes 3226.
- Uses self-destruction to avoid capture, but Affiliated Worlds can disable his prepared revival methods 1162.
- Powerful combat avatars require Divine Power and portions of the main body’s consciousness and body. Consecutive creations reduce his main body’s strength by at least twenty percent 3374.
- Captured bodies, clones, or consciousness fragments can become materials for Andrew’s curses 1566 2220.
Research and Supernatural Engineering
- Enhances Compound Five using a treasure from Demon and creates nine seeds intended to transform Earth into an Ability World 2131.
- Adds a Chaos Attribute to the resulting Ability Factors so recipients become unstable and difficult to control 2131.
- Proposes fusing the stranded Demon Legion with his Cockroach race to create stronger Cockroach Demons 2335.
- Develops Doomsday Zombies using regeneration, Doomsday Genes, Divine Power, and magic; later creates another Doomsday from Immortal Kang’s materials 3495 3540.

- Homelander — Asset whose fame-based power Chthon exploits through a plan to impersonate Leonardo and stage a superhero debut 3601.
History
Wanda and the Struggle for Hell
Andrew first identifies Chthon’s influence when examining Wanda’s destiny. The alternate Scarlet Witch later reveals that the Darkhold offered a way to free Wandas from tragedy by sacrificing the Main Universe. Andrew rejects that solution and seals the book outside his universe 325 376.
Chthon becomes openly involved in the Hell war by halving the cost of Black Magic for the Demon Kings and directing construction of the Dark God Altar. His attempt to obtain Wanda as a descent vessel fails when Andrew overlays her Fate with that of the Mechanical Scarlet Witch. Chthon withdraws but vows to continue obstructing Andrew’s claim to Hell 479 491.
After descending through the altar, Chthon exposes Skeleton Demon King as an infiltrator and reveals that the leaked blueprints were themselves part of his trap. Andrew counters that he deliberately allowed a limited descent. Their duel ends when Andrew exploits Small Universe aura secretly implanted in the sacrificed demon souls: the River Styx destroys Chthon’s clone, and the redirected Death Fate injures his main body. Andrew then becomes Lord of Hell 513 514 920.
The Magic Ring Ambush
Chthon considers obtaining Technology Magic a victory over Andrew, only to discover that the ring and its magic were deliberately traceable. Andrew, Hoggoth, and Ganahta imprison his incarnation on the moon of Pleasure Space World, where ordinary revival methods cannot function 1162.
Repeated sacrifices, self-destructions, and a mental attack on the prison’s controllers fail to free him. His main body finally sacrifices a planet to support the butterfly escape. Shuma opens a route out, while Death activates Chthon’s prepared massacre in India and uses the victims’ souls to carry away the sole surviving butterfly. Andrew has secretly marked that fragment with Origin Essence 1163 1164.
World of Gods and Hell Fusion
Chthon, Set, and Death enter the Greek Underworld seeking a partner for Hell Fusion. Chthon forcibly recruits Medusa, takes over Zeus, and uses Zeus’s authority to deliver other gods into captivity. He plans to turn Medusa’s resentment into Hatred of This World while the imprisoned gods help release the Titans 1522 1548 1550.
The operation collapses when Hades betrays him and Andrew briefly restores Zeus’s resistance. Andrew curses Chthon through their shared aura; Chthon destroys his own incarnation rather than surrender its consciousness. Time Reversal restores the empty body, which Andrew retains as curse material. Chthon nevertheless continues organizing Demon’s faction afterward 1566 1570.
Coalition Warfare and the Ability World
Chthon repeatedly reinforces the opposition through cursed inheritances, reincarnation schemes, and artificial soldiers. He helps prepare a falsified Lord of Hell inheritance intended to control Mephisto and later supports Mephisto’s reincarnation on Earth 2071 2225 2259.
His largest transformation project sacrifices the Death Legion and Monster Legion to awaken nine Compound Five Seeds. Intended to mature into Sky-Piercing Trees, they will spread Ability Factors throughout the ecosystem while receiving the Universe Will’s protection. Chthon deliberately adds instability to make the resulting society harder for Andrew to govern 2131.
During the Fire Dragon campaign, he supplies World Power to the Fire Dragon Leader. Andrew forces him into a prolonged support role, while Earth Turtle buries the Zombie Dragons and cripples the wider attack 2293 2296.
Scar and the Compound V Big Trees
Scar’s emergence gives Chthon access to the Depths of Hell’s Negative Aura, but their partnership immediately becomes a contest for control. Chthon negotiates payment for catastrophes, cultivates spies among Scar’s commanders, and manipulates the transfer of Scar’s Brand from the Headless Knight Commander to Rita 2314 2343 2351 2352.
Their temporary fusion strengthens them but also creates a shared vulnerability: chaos affecting Scar spreads into Chthon. Andrew exploits that connection during their battle 2375 2380.
Chthon later impersonates Hera to seize the Zeus Brothers and ultimately four Great Trees. The disguise is exposed, but his combat experience initially overwhelms the group. Andrew intervenes through Zeus’s body and forces a retreat; Chthon then deceives the pursuing Scar with a Mirage and traps him in an altar 2454 2456 2457 2460.
Kang Alliances and Later Campaigns
Chthon coordinates countermeasures against the King of Abilities, including restoring and modifying Three-Eyed Demon and supplying demons for Kang’s experiments. He also cooperates with Immortal Kang, though their expedition into Kang’s core universe becomes another trap arranged by the Mechanical Demon King 2550 2926.
In later battles, he protects Pharaoh Kang’s casting at the expense of endangered Conqueror Kangs. His Many-Eyed Demon God attack also fails when Andrew reaches and poisons him before the next reflected injury can be inflicted 2645 2646 2869.
Los Angeles, the Sea Goddess, and the Final Preparations
Chthon develops a following around Los Angeles, using the relative safety from monsters to attract believers and build an army. He possesses Rune Woman during further operations and later becomes Grand Commander of the Mysterious Organization 3102 3157 3314.
An ambush using the Sea Goddess, Negative Commanders, and the Iron Great Tree’s weapon reverses when Andrew restores the goddess’s memories. She attacks Chthon instead; Andrew collects the escaping mist and begins sealing him 3224 3225 3226.
Further campaigns include sacrificial attacks against Hades, repeated replacement avatars, Doomsday Zombies, and a bid to control all nine Great Trees. The Europe battle defeats his Great Demon God projection’s defensive role. His final fusion is undermined by fake soul fragments and Black Dragon’s Twisted Soul, forcing him to abandon victory and consider damage control 3354 3374 3495 3540 3550 3553.
Subsequent Scripted World
Chthon remains central to the surviving alliance. He recruits Hydra, Obadiah, and Kingpin, directs investigation of Inhuman awakening crystals, and endorses Homelander’s celebrity disguise 3600 3601.
Unable to reach Death or safely summon another Great Demon God, he turns to sacrifices addressed to the abstract concept of evil. He and the Tree of Time also identify Wade and the Intermediary as possible keys to understanding why the supposedly absurd scripted world behaves like a normal universe 3602.
Notable Quotes

“Shut up. I, Chthon, would rather die in battle than surrender.” 3374
