Overview

A Sage is among the highest recognized levels of existence in the Great Desolation. Sagehood grants overwhelming authority and creates a decisive disparity between Sages and lower cultivators such as Zhunshengs or Sub-Saints. Taiqing's ascension immediately allows him to suppress Huang Tian and demand the Kongtong Seal, the Human Race's racial supreme treasure 119.

Sages are not a unified faction. Their authority is tied to different Dao systems—including the Heavenly Dao, Earth Dao, and Human Dao—and their individual loyalties frequently determine how they use that power 127 176.

Sagehood and Dao Authority

• Taiqing uses Sage's might against Huang Tian after founding the Human Teaching 119.
• The pressure from a severed Sage arm obliterates a late-stage Quasi saint despite the protection of a top-grade Innate Spiritual Treasure 81.
• Huang Tian later kills Amun-Ra, a Sage from the Egyptian Great Thousand World, and defeats Anubis with a single word 169.

Dao Integration

Certain Sages derive their standing from integration with, or consummation of, a governing Dao.

• Hongjun's merger with the Heavenly Dao enables him to govern the Prehistoric World 128.
• Houtu's completion of the Earth Dao establishes the Earth Dao as an authority separate from the Heavenly Dao 127.
• Dao-based authority does not guarantee impartiality: Huang Tian openly questions Hongjun's virtue and impartiality when Hongjun protects Yuanshi 178.

Restrictions on Descent

A Sage's true body cannot always enter the Prehistoric World freely.

• When a Sage attacks Huang Tian, the Heavenly Dao prevents the Sage's true form from descending, though its severed arm is allowed to fall into the world 81.
• The arm contains immense power and Dao insight, prompting the Demon Race, Witch Clan, Sanqing, and other Great Divine Powers to fight for it 81.

Major Events

Nuwa's Ascension and the Sage's Barrier

After creating the Human Race, Nuwa becomes a Sage. She erects a Sage's Barrier around the race, granting it one million years of protection; by Huang Tian's later assessment, 800,000 years remain 1 12.

Conflict over Sage Flesh

After Huang Tian destroys a Sage's palm through the power of trillions of humans, the fallen arm becomes a coveted resource. Di Jun and Eastern Emperor Taiyi seek it with the hope of attaining Sagehood or at least the Sub-Saint realm 81.

The Rise of the Earth Dao

Houtu's Earth Dao consummation weakens the Heavenly Dao's exclusive control of the Great Desolation. Zhenyuanzi subsequently achieves Dao Integration and becomes the Ancestor of Earth Immortals 127.

Profound Gate Intervention

The Six Sages of the Profound Gate repeatedly intervene in the struggles of the Witch and Demon Clans. They pressure the Demon Race for the Thirty-three Heavens, recruit Demon Race members into their lineages, and compete over the vacant Heavenly Emperor position 179 181 183.

Defense of the Great Desolation

During the invasion by other worlds, Sages participate in the defense of the Great Desolation. Nuwa mends the heavens and later confronts the chaos, while Huang Tian strengthens the world barrier with the Innate Five Elements Grand Formation 174 175.
