Background / History

Diavolo controlled the Insect Arrow and led the Italian Stand-user organization Passione. Polnareff identifies him as the Stand user responsible for his injuries and describes the organization as being under Diavolo’s control 1.

He concealed his identity through Tobio, transforming between the younger guise and his muscular true form. In Sardinia, a fortune teller predicted that Diavolo would die repeatedly at the hands of an unknown man; Diavolo killed the fortune teller to suppress the revelation. He then used Tobio and Epitaph to manipulate Risotto into targeting Dawn 11 12.

After Bucciarati’s betrayal, Diavolo revealed King Crimson and nearly killed Bucciarati through Time Erasure. He later confronted Polnareff in the coliseum, but Polnareff used the Insect Arrow to awaken Silver Chariot Requiem, which seized the Arrow and triggered the citywide soul-exchange crisis 8 21 22.

While hidden in Giorno’s body, Diavolo attempted to use Time Erasure and a self-inflicted mortal wound to transfer his soul into Giorno’s healed body. Dawn regained control and countered with Scales of Resolve. During the ensuing transaction, Dawn traded Diavolo’s Past Life, nullifying his position as Passione’s leader 23 24.

Diavolo subsequently remained bound to Dawn as a second soul. Though initially hostile and prone to seizing control, he became a practical combat partner, using King Crimson to protect their shared body against enemies including Dio, parallel-world Stand users, and Kars 25 26 35 37.

Dawn later extracted Diavolo’s soul and rewrote his memories. Diavolo nevertheless continued to manifest and assist Dawn, including detecting the approach of the Two-Faced Emperor, an alternate Diavolo who had defeated Giorno in another world 42 57 59.

Following the end of the Hypothetical Universe, Diavolo attended Giorno’s succession ceremony. Giorno offered him an honorary badge and established an Honorary Guard for his protection 63.

Appearance

Diavolo’s revealed form is a red-haired, powerfully built man. He can shift into the younger, slender guise of Tobio to obscure his identity and communicate with subordinates without exposing himself 11 12.

Personality

Diavolo is intensely paranoid about his identity and position. He eliminates anyone who learns too much about him, reacts violently to prophecies of his death, and insists that no one may threaten his “eternal throne” 11 8.

He is calculating and observant in battle. Diavolo quickly deduced that Dio’s ability was likely time-based, uses Epitaph to assess danger before acting, and recognizes when King Crimson’s power is insufficient against an opponent such as Kars 26 30 39.

His forced bond with Dawn gradually turns his survival instinct into cooperation. He gives tactical advice, protects their shared body, and remains vigilant for threats, though he still resents being treated as Dawn’s subordinate or “worker” 25 28 32 111.

King Crimson

Diavolo’s Stand, King Crimson, is a close-range combat Stand centered on Time Erasure and future prediction.
