Background / History
Clan Origins and Spirit Hall
Yu Xiaogang is the son of Thunder Douluo Yu Yuanzhen, the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Sect’s patriarch. His low soul power and Luo Sanpao martial soul made him a target of ridicule within the clan. He returned there for a time after parting from Flender, but left again because the mockery had worsened 70 76.
He spent several years in Spirit Hall and was acquainted with Bibi Dong. His ambition was to gain access to its restricted library, overcome Luo Sanpao’s rank-30 bottleneck, and establish himself as a celebrated theorist. Yu Yuanzhen initially prevented clan elders from expelling him over his association with Spirit Hall 12 13 40.
Augustine later publicly exposes Yu Xiaogang’s appropriation of Spirit Hall’s accumulated research as his own Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul. Bibi Dong, then Holy Maiden, had him imprisoned for eight years among evil Soul Masters. Later accounts describe sexual abuse during that imprisonment. He was also expelled from his clan, although he retained his soul power, money, and Soul Tool 93 96 307.
Tang San’s Apprenticeship
At Nuoding Academy, Yu Xiaogang devoted himself to theoretical research without teaching classes or performing other work. Tang San’s Blue Silver Grass and innate full soul power convinced him that the boy possessed twin martial souls—and represented the exceptional disciple he had been waiting for 2.
Ye Qinghe’s objections briefly made Tang San distrust him. Yu Xiaogang nevertheless secured Tang San’s apprenticeship by explaining his inference from the boy’s martial soul certificate and his claimed survey of 647 Blue Silver Grass users. Tang San accepted him with the declaration that a teacher was a father for life 3.
Yu Xiaogang was poisoned by a Mandala Snake during a soul-ring hunting trip. Tang San neutralized the poison, but his teacher subsequently developed severe swelling, increased appetite, nausea, and impaired mobility. Believing these problems resulted from an injury suffered on his behalf, Tang San cared for him throughout the academic year 12.
Yu Xiaogang later gave birth to Da Yu’er and Xiao Yu’er, whom he regarded as “god-given” daughters. He stayed at Nuoding partly because Spirit Hall had stopped his allowance and he lacked another reliable means of supporting them. Tang Hao maintained contact with him chiefly because his Spirit Hall connections might help solve the dangers of Tang San’s twin martial souls 12 13 20 21 91.
Shrek Training and the Suotuo Confrontation
After sending Tang San and Xiao Wu to Shrek, Yu Xiaogang pursued the Continental Advanced Soul Master Academy Elite Tournament as a means of proving his theories. He supported Qin Ming’s proposal to merge Shrek into Heaven Dou Royal Academy, despite Flender’s resistance 33 66.
A confrontation with Ye Qinghe and Dugu Yan ended with Dugu Bo intervening against Shrek. Yu Xiaogang invoked both Tang Hao and his own father for protection. When Ye Qinghe offered to spare him at the expense of other Shrek students, Oscar and Ma Hongjun turned against him. Yu Tianheng publicly denied knowing his uncle to protect the clan, and Ye Qinghe subsequently castrated Yu Xiaogang 69 70 71.
Yu Xiaogang then persuaded the guilt-ridden Yu Tianheng to join Shrek. He overrode Flender’s objections by threatening to take Tang San, Xiao Wu, and Yu Tianheng away from the academy. His revised team placed Yu Tianheng as captain and Tang San as vice-captain 74 76 97.
Shrek’s subsequent scandals brought his imprisonment, daughters, and teaching failures into public discussion. He hoped a string of Soul Arena victories would repair that reputation and accepted Manager Ao’s invitation to face the Imperial Fighting Team as an opportunity for vindication and revenge. During the match, he prevented Flender from conceding despite the students’ serious injuries 93 94 99 108.
Heaven Dou Demonstration
When Xiao Wu developed martial soul fusion skills with four Shrek teammates, Yu Xiaogang claimed that his research and targeted training had produced them. The narration explicitly establishes that he had not understood their emergence before taking credit 127.
He arranged a public demonstration at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, followed by his daughters’ martial soul awakenings. The fusion demonstrations briefly impressed the audience, but both girls awakened Luo Sanpao with only half a rank of innate soul power. His predictions of twin martial souls, the Golden Sacred Dragon, or innate full soul power collapsed in public 137 141 142 143.
Tang San then denounced him, blaming his instructions for the loss of an incompletely fused external soul bone. Yu Xiaogang fled rather than answer. He nevertheless insisted that Shrek remain at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, hoping his position as supervising teacher would allow him to repair their relationship 144 148.
Loss of Authority and Later Imprisonment
Over the following period, other Shrek students overtook Tang San in cultivation, while Xiao Wu and her allies practiced fusion skills without informing either teacher or disciple. Yu Xiaogang had also abandoned his daughters after their disappointing awakenings; Flender took them in 166 168.
Shrek’s teachers and students openly rejected his authority and subjected him to repeated beatings. He pleaded with Tang San to preserve their teacher–disciple relationship and his leadership position. During a dangerous ten-thousand-year soul-ring absorption, Xiao Wu’s faction falsely assigned him responsibility and bound him, threatening to bury him alongside Tang San if the boy died 170 173 175 181.
Tang San later blamed Yu Xiaogang when Tang Hao demanded to know who had instructed him to add a soul ring to his second martial soul. Yu Xiaogang became pregnant again following the Gale Demon Wolf incident in Sunset Forest. Ning Fengzhi subsequently placed him under Balang’s control, declaring that Balang could dispose of him after the child’s birth 212 213 217.
He spent five years confined in the apartment block behind the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect and endured six pregnancies. Spirit Hall eventually stormed the building. By then, he hated Shrek’s members for abandoning him and allowing Ning Fengzhi and Tang Hao to imprison him 311.
Appearance
Yu Xiaogang’s appearance changes with his illnesses and injuries: he is heavily swollen during his early Nuoding period, later described as slightly plump and bearded, and eventually shown with a stiff, clean-shaven face 12 66 136.
- Early age description: Almost fifty when Tang San becomes his disciple 4.
- Hair and facial hair: Crew cut and full beard during the Suotuo period; clean-shaven at the later Heaven Dou confrontation 66 136.
- Post-poisoning condition: Enormous abdomen, greasy face, greatly increased appetite, and difficulty moving 12.
- Clothing: Wears thick winter clothes even after summer has begun during his illness 12.
- Gait: Described with his legs unusually far apart during the Shrek–Imperial Fighting Team encounter 66.
Personality
Yu Xiaogang’s central ambition is recognition as an unrivaled martial soul theorist. He imagines Tang San’s success allowing him to return triumphantly to his clan and win his father’s approval. He similarly treats his daughters’ expected talents as proof of his theories 107 124.
His confidence repeatedly exceeds his knowledge. Rather than admit ignorance about Shrek’s fusion skills, he claims to have engineered them and becomes so excited by the praise that he begins believing his own account. He also credits naturally occurring cultivation breakthroughs to his training 126 127.
The narration repeatedly contrasts his aggression toward allies with his fear of stronger outsiders. He threatens Flender, rebukes students, and refuses to relinquish control, yet invokes powerful relatives or flees when personally endangered. His attempt to preserve himself at other students’ expense destroys much of their remaining respect 70 71 74 94 144.
His concern for Tang San is persistent but inseparable from his ambitions. He carries the injured boy away after the Suotuo assault and anxiously asks about him after Ling Yuan’s attack. Even after Tang San turns hostile, Yu Xiaogang continues seeking his favor because their relationship remains his last prospect of professional vindication 94 121 175 178.

Martial Soul Theory
Yu Xiaogang presents the Ten Core Competencies of Martial Soul as his research, although Augustine identifies the work as appropriated Spirit Hall knowledge 40 93.

|---|---|
| Martial soul potential | Argues that there are no useless martial souls, only useless Soul Masters 41. |
