Background / History
During Headmaster Dipper's tenure, Dumbledore served as Hogwarts' Shapeshifting Technique professor. He saw through Matthew Black's Illusionary Body Spell despite Matthew's Magic Sense failing to detect him, mistaking Matthew for his grandfather Alfat Black. Around the same period, Dumbledore sought to protect the expelled Hagrid, knowing that the half-giant would struggle outside Hogwarts. 23 26
As Headmaster, Dumbledore used Nicolas Flamel's Philosopher's Stone as bait to expose Voldemort's agent within Hogwarts. He monitored the protections around the Stone, later admitting that the trials had been measured so that the students would not face challenges beyond their abilities. 101 108
After examining the aftermath of the unicorn killings, Dumbledore identified Voldemort's return and inferred that the Dark Lord was sustaining himself with unicorn blood. He believed that Matthew, despite sharing several traits with Voldemort, differed because he had known warmth and retained love in his heart. 101
During the Goblin conspiracy against Hogwarts, Dumbledore left the International Confederation of Wizards conference to return to the school after Fawkes warned him of the danger. His choice saved Hogwarts from an impending attack, but the poisoned conference delegates' deaths led to political backlash; Dumbledore accepted responsibility and resigned as the Confederation's president. 195 232
Voldemort later exploited Dumbledore's belief that a cursed ring was the Resurrection Stone. The ring's curse nearly killed him, but Matthew used Fairy Fountain water to shatter the ring and dispel the spreading curse. Dumbledore admitted that he had been unable to resist the Deathly Hallow's temptation. 232 233
Personality
Dumbledore is compassionate and attentive to his students' emotional well-being. His conversation with Matthew after the Mirror of Erised incident was partly motivated by his determination not to repeat the tragedy of overlooking Tom Riddle's inner isolation. He reassured Matthew that Hogwarts would always support him. 47 262
He is pragmatic when lives are at stake. During Voldemort's life-energy harvesting scheme, Dumbledore chose to prioritize the safety of the larger student body over Fred Weasley, whom Voldemort was using as a hostage. 260
Dumbledore recognizes the limits of his own era and authority. After Matthew captured Voldemort, he openly supported Matthew's plan to integrate magic into Muggle society, viewing the younger generation as the people who would have to confront that future. 387
