Background / History
Matthew is a transmigrator who retained the memories of an ordinary previous life after dying in an accident. Although he had only watched parts of the original films, those memories gave him partial foreknowledge of major events surrounding Hogwarts and Voldemort. 1 7
In his current life, Matthew was raised after the deaths of his parents: an Auror father and a Muggle mother, both killed by Death Eaters. Their killer was his aunt, Bellatrix Lestrange. His early magical education instead came through the portrait of his late grandfather, Alfat Black, a noted Ancient Runes scholar. 4
As a half-blood Slytherin, Matthew endured extortion, isolation, and other bullying from students tied to pure-blood supremacist families. His advanced spellcasting let him retaliate effectively, protect other bullied half-bloods, and become a prominent—if controversial—figure within Slytherin. 5 18
During the summer before his third year, Preserved Egg uncovered an ancient metal disc set with a red crystal. The disc transported Matthew to a snowy other world populated by Runic Magic, wizard apprentices, and magical creatures. There, he saved Chris Watson and Tina, received a notebook containing the Lightning Bolt spell, and discovered the Aemon Basic Meditation Method. 1 2 4 10
Matthew subsequently entered Whitestone Town’s wizarding society, cultivated Runic Magic, joined the Court Wizards as a Temporary Investigator, and assisted Link Watson and Anna in the missing-persons investigation. His inquiries ultimately led to Old White’s mutation, Jack White’s involvement, and the discovery of ritual-related materials and magical resources. 30 36 39
At Hogwarts, Matthew sought Merlin’s portrait to understand the lost Meditation Method. Merlin sent him to 1943 as a trial, where Matthew killed the thousand-year Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets while avoiding major disruption to the timeline. 22 23 25 26
Appearance
Matthew is a neatly dressed, handsome black-haired youth with natural curls. At fourteen, he is already physically and magically composed enough to be mistaken for an older and highly capable wizard. 1 12
- Black hair with natural curls. 1
- Keeps a clean, orderly appearance and commonly alters his clothes through Transfiguration. 1 5
- Can disguise himself as a gaunt, sinister-looking red-haired man through the Dark Green Potion. 5
- Resembles his grandfather Alfat Black as a young man closely enough to fool 1943-era Dumbledore. 26
Personality
Matthew is calm, observant, and highly pragmatic. He responds quickly to threats, conceals abilities that could expose his otherworldly origins, and treats combat as a problem to be solved efficiently. After rescuing Mundungus Fletcher from six attackers, he charged Mundungus one hundred Galleons for his assistance. 6 12 32
He is also considerate toward people he accepts as allies. He protects Chris and Tina, reassures Hermione and Neville, teaches Neville a familiar-summoning spell, and helps younger Slytherins targeted for their blood status. 3 8 18 20
Matthew’s drive for power stems from insecurity after his parents’ deaths and from witnessing Muggle refugees affected by war. He believes strength is necessary to preserve peace and intends to gain enough power that he cannot be helpless when Voldemort and the Death Eaters return. 15 47
His ambition is increasingly evident. The Mirror of Erised shows him portrayed across a peaceful moonlit London street, an image that surprises him with its mixture of public influence and authority. 46
Abilities & Skills
Hogwarts Spellcasting
Matthew’s casting ability surpassed that of some adult wizards before he began Runic Magic cultivation. He is proficient with offensive, defensive, transfiguration, and silent-casting techniques. 1 5
- Uses Shield Charms, Levitation Charms, Transfiguration, Restoration, Legilimency, and other standard spells in rapid succession. 2 6 12
- Can simulate Dumbledore’s “Fire God Opens the Way” through Blazing Flames and Fire Control Magic, though his version is substantially weaker and cannot control Fiendfyre. 1
- Uses the Killing Curse in lethal encounters, but it was ineffective against the thousand-year Basilisk’s resistance. 3 6 25
- Developed a gliding technique by applying Levitation Charms to his cloak and shoes. 25
Runic Magic and Meditation
Matthew practices the Aemon Basic Meditation Method, a lost system that develops the Sea of Consciousness and allows pre-constructed Runic Models to accelerate Runic Magic. 10 11 22
- Uses Runic Models to condense and guide runes far faster than ordinary manual casting. 12 13
- Casts Lightning Bolt, a spell capable of boring through a tree trunk; after meditation training, its power increased by 20%. 4 13
- Uses Blue Water Flower Juice, Spirit Nourishing Potions, Mandrake Revitalizing Potions, Potent Vitality Potion, and Dragon Scale Incense to accelerate cultivation and recover mental power. 11 21 49
- Meditation improves his tolerance for repeated Dark Magic, making consecutive Killing Curses less mentally taxing. 13
Magic Sense and Detection
Matthew possesses unusually sensitive Magic Sense, which first allowed him to notice the metal disc’s faint magical fluctuations. 1
- Detects magical activity, hidden threats, and the conditions of nearby terrain or buildings. 1 11 36
- After reaching Level 2 Wizard Apprentice, his Magic Sense radius reaches approximately fifty meters. 24
- Used it with Preserved Egg’s clones to navigate the Chamber of Secrets without looking at the Basilisk. 24
- Cannot reliably sense exceptionally powerful wizards such as Dumbledore. 26 46
Shapeshifting Technique
Matthew uses Shapeshifting Technique offensively, especially in environments with abundant material to manipulate. 16
- Transformed a large tree into a Treant Guardian during an ambush. 16
- Created a Broad Greatsword and employed Shapeshifting Technique during the Basilisk battle. 16 25
- Learned the technique from the portrait of his grandmother, Lina, who excelled at it during her Hogwarts years. 26
Legilimency and Illusion Magic
Matthew uses Legilimency discreetly because Memory Magic is unfamiliar to the Runic Magic world’s wizards. 4 32
- Read Preserved Egg’s memories to confirm that time stopped in the original world while he crossed dimensions. 4
- Extracted information from Sir Rayne by guiding his memories through Legilimency. 32
- Uses the Illusionary Body Spell to hide himself, though specialized anti-invisibility tools and Dumbledore can see through it. 13 16 26
Potions and Alchemy
Matthew is an accomplished brewer who produces potions for trade, cultivation, and combat support. 1 6
- Sold batches of Stunning Potions under the identity Gehrman. 6
- Assisted Snape in brewing hospital supplies and received an improved Spirit Nourishing Potion formula. 20
- Brewed Potent Vitality Potion using troll blood to reinforce his Sea of Consciousness and support breakthroughs. 42 43 49
- Processed Basilisk remains into valuable potion and alchemical materials. 27
Quidditch
Matthew is a highly accurate Slytherin Beater known for targeting opposing players. 43
- Holds the title Annual Best Hitter after repeatedly knocking out opponents in the previous year’s matches. 43
- Joined the Slytherin team as a substitute against Gryffindor and contributed to a 210–150 victory. 43 46
- Used Bludgers to injure Alicia Spinnet and Katie Bell and to pressure Harry Potter during his pursuit of the Golden Snitch. 44 45
