Hogwarts years

As a Hogwarts student in 1943, Tom Riddle cultivated the image of a gentle, courageous Slytherin admired by his peers. Behind that façade, he opened the Chamber of Secrets, endangered Hogwarts, and exploited the crisis to frame Rubeus Hagrid for raising Acromantulas. His actions earned him praise from Headmaster Dipper and the Special Contribution to School Award. 23 24

Riddle despised his Muggle father and his own birth name, intending to discard what he considered his “filthy identity.” By this point, he had already created a Horcrux and intended to rule under a new identity forever. 23

After leaving Hogwarts, he sought the Defense Against the Dark Arts post from Dumbledore. Dumbledore refused him, noting that Riddle had become physically altered by Dark Magic: his cheeks were sunken, his nose flattened, and his expression fierce. 262

First return and possession of Quirrell

Following his defeat and flight to Albania, Voldemort was discovered by Quirinus Quirrell. He gradually influenced Quirrell, possessed him, read his thoughts, and reduced him to a disposable servant while draining his life force to restore his own condition. 84 99

While inhabiting Quirrell, Voldemort traded advanced knowledge of Fiendfyre to Matthew Black in exchange for a Norwegian Ridgeback egg. He later attempted to seize the Philosopher’s Stone, but Matthew severed Quirrell’s arm, stole the Stone, and resisted Voldemort’s direct control of Quirrell’s body. 84 106 107

Horcruxes acting independently

Voldemort’s divided soul did not remain unified. The Locket, Diary, and Diadem Horcruxes each developed into independent incarnations with their own priorities, methods, and ambitions.

The Diary incarnation possessed Ginny Weasley, attempted to reopen the Chamber of Secrets, drained magic from Ginny and Gilderoy Lockhart, and used Lockhart to reconnect with Death Eaters. It sought to resurrect itself as the dominant Voldemort rather than restore the weakened main body. 152 161

The Diary incarnation later gained a partial physical form, commanded Death Eaters, and fought Matthew directly. Matthew trapped it in a massive tornado and destroyed the diary with Fiendfyre. 183 184

Resurrection and decline

Voldemort’s main body was restored through a ritual using his father’s bone, Bellatrix Lestrange’s arm, and blood presented as Harry Potter’s. Unknown to him, Matthew had tampered with the blood, leaving Voldemort vulnerable to recurring magical blockages and exhaustion. 315 333 386

After returning, Voldemort discovered that most of his Horcruxes had been destroyed or had become independent beings. Fearful that a revived Horcrux would absorb him, he became increasingly paranoid and withdrew to Albania with Nagini, his last usable Horcrux. 325 329 333

Matthew captured the Locket incarnation after luring it into a trap through Dolores Umbridge, then extracted its memories and killed it. 351 352 The main body was later defeated again during an aerial duel at the Ministry of Magic and surrendered information about Nagini under Mental Touches. 385 386

The Diadem incarnation escaped Britain, seized a Magical Countermeasures Bureau research base in Japan, and pursued biological experiments involving snake eggs and human subjects. Matthew, Dumbledore, and Tang Si eventually ambushed and killed it. 342 413

Appearance

Voldemort’s appearance varies significantly according to the soul fragment or body he inhabits. His younger, pre-modification incarnations resemble Tom Riddle: a tall, slender, handsome young man with jet-black hair and a disarmingly warm smile. 145 161 178

His main body became increasingly inhuman after Dark Magic modifications, with sunken cheeks, a flattened nose, and an intensely hostile gaze. 262 288

Voldemort is highly ambitious, manipulative, and obsessed with escaping death. Even as a student, he concealed murderous intent behind an appearance of sincerity, carefully shaping public opinion against Hagrid while presenting himself as Hogwarts’ protector. 23 24

He repeatedly attempts to recruit talented young wizards by claiming they are alike. He offered Matthew power, Dark Magic knowledge, and partnership, arguing that exceptional Slytherins should stand together; Matthew’s refusal provoked immediate rage. 107 145

His fear of death becomes more pronounced after his resurrections fail to grant the invulnerability he expected. The destruction and independence of his Horcruxes leave him suspicious even of fragments of his own soul, while his weakened body undermines his confidence and judgment. 325 329 333
