Background / History

Merry was born as the Going Merry’s Ship Spirit, a being believed to arise when a crew deeply cherishes its vessel. Even after the ship became unseaworthy, she forced it through the Gods of Water to reach Judicial Island and save the Straw Hats. Her original vessel’s keel was irreparably damaged, however, leaving it beyond ordinary repair. 41 46

Fearful that stopping her repairs would cause the Going Merry to break apart and kill her, Merry initially continued maintaining the ship despite its condition. She ultimately agreed to cooperate with Xi Yan’s attempt to save her because she wanted to survive and keep adventuring with her partners. 48

Xi Yan sealed the Going Merry into a scroll, locking its deterioration in place but severing Merry’s connection to the vessel. When she began fading, he used Yin-Yang Release to maintain her form and turned the scroll into her new vessel. Merry’s signature stabilized her body and made her an independent spirit, allowing her to remain with the Straw Hats after the Going Merry was retired. 49

After the crew received the Thousand Sunny, Merry found that she could control it and later formed a summoning contract with it. During the two-year separation, she remained on Amazon Lily while Xi Yan and Luffy undertook their mission against Impel Down and Marineford. She trained under Grandma Za and Hancock, awakening Wind Force and developing into a capable combatant. 59 64 178 329

Before the crew’s reunion, Merry returned to Sabaody Archipelago with Rayleigh half a month ahead of Luffy and Xi Yan. She helped Rayleigh with the Thousand Sunny’s coating by carrying materials, and her ability to fly surprised Zoro when they reunited. 335 351

During the final struggle against Doflamingo, Merry helped evacuate civilians before prioritizing the exhausted Luffy’s safety. Her efforts eventually brought her into direct combat with Doflamingo, who captured her and used her to threaten Luffy. Luffy returned in time to protect her, and Xi Yan later praised her efforts after Doflamingo’s defeat. 719 723 728 729 731

Appearance

Merry appears as a very young girl, commonly perceived as being around five or six years old despite having existed only for a short time in physical form. Her appearance changes little over the two-year separation, although a Marine later estimates that she looks about eight. 52 329 384 409

  • Noticeably pointed ears, which Brook compares to those of storybook elves 82
  • Wears a green raincoat when Xi Yan first brings her onto the deck of the Going Merry 47
  • Small stature, often causing enemies to mistake her for a harmless mascot or pirate trainee 409 671
  • Can fly by surrounding herself with Wind Force 379
  • Often carries supplies, tools, and weapons through her personal storage space 49 109

Personality

Merry is affectionate, earnest, and strongly attached to the Straw Hats. She regards the crew and their ships as precious companions, and her wish to continue traveling with them motivates many of her decisions. She was devastated when separated from Xi Yan and Luffy before their Impel Down mission, but accepted their promise to return and remained behind for her own safety. 49 178

She is proud of her abilities and enjoys being praised, especially when others recognize her as strong or dependable. At the same time, she is sensitive about being dismissed as a child, trainee, or mascot, insisting that she is a fighter. Although she objects to being underestimated, she also willingly introduces herself as the Straw Hats’ apprentice or trainee. 52 127 384 454 614 671

Merry is notably kind even toward enemies when they are in danger. At Punk Hazard, she stayed with Marines to help protect them from poison gas, provided they did not threaten the Straw Hats. 456 472

Her compassion does not override her loyalty to her companions. When Luffy required protection while recovering his Haki, she stopped evacuating Dressrosa citizens and entrusted their escape to Gatz’s warnings. She was willing to risk her life against Doflamingo to buy time, despite Law warning that Luffy would not want her to be harmed. 723 726

Merry’s courage coexists with a child’s fear and vulnerability. She endured the Going Merry’s final voyage alone despite being terrified of the dark sea, and later held back tears while Doflamingo restrained her because she believed others were relying on her. Seeing Luffy arrive to protect her finally caused those suppressed emotions to spill out. 49 728 729

She respects her crewmates’ privacy, choosing not to use her wind-based hearing to eavesdrop on Xi Yan’s conversations with Galette. She also openly aspires to become a great pirate and responds enthusiastically to encouragement from her companions. 761 762

Abilities & Skills

Ship Spirit Physiology

Merry possesses physical abilities unusual for her appearance and is closely attuned to ships.

  • Previously repaired the Going Merry alone and transported heavy repair materials. 52
  • Caught Xi Yan when he collapsed toward the sea despite his adult weight. 52
  • Can sense a ship’s consciousness and determine whether it will resist her influence. 59
  • Possesses an unusual internal energy that Xi Yan distinguishes from Chakra. 63
  • Recovers after a short period of numbness from being struck by Nami’s lightning, surprising Nami with her resilience. 385
  • Withstood deep-sea pressure during the battle around Noah’s Ark. 389
  • Does not suffer a Devil Fruit user’s loss of strength upon entering seawater, although underwater conditions still hinder her wind techniques and she cannot remain submerged indefinitely. 389 390
  • Instinctively rejects Devil Fruits; Xi Yan theorizes that her body may contain a substance that suppresses Devil Fruit power, though this remains unconfirmed. Merry believes eating a Devil Fruit could kill her, but merely holding her does not weaken Devil Fruit users. 328
  • Can be injured despite her unusual constitution; Hody pierces her arm with a harpoon while she is carrying Luffy underwater. 390

Ship Control

Merry can attach her power to cooperative ships and operate them without a conventional helmsman.

  • Controls the Thousand Sunny’s movement and direction. 59 397
  • Can turn, move, and retrieve the Thousand Sunny remotely. 486
  • Her control depends on the vessel not resisting her; the new Thousand Sunny’s budding consciousness accepted her. 59
  • Can lift the Thousand Sunny into the air with Wind Force. 379
  • States that she can keep the Thousand Sunny airborne for a long time with her post-training strength. 381
  • Her control does not replace navigation: Nami must still monitor the weather and determine the ship’s course. 63 79
  • Wonders whether she could control Noah’s Ark, but does not demonstrate that ability. 391

Summoning and Sealing Techniques

Although Merry cannot learn ordinary ninjutsu, she can use techniques tied to summoning scrolls and sealing.

  • Uses Reverse Summoning Technique to summon Xi Yan. 63
  • Uses Reverse Summoning to bring Xi Yan to her trapped group in Thriller Bark’s Animal Paradise. 95
  • Can summon the Thousand Sunny after it signed her scroll contract. 64
  • Can seal the Thousand Sunny or other large pirate ships into a scroll for transport and storage. 455 501
  • Can summon the Thousand Sunny across the distance between Sabaody Archipelago and Amazon Lily. 291
  • Summoning a ship onto land risks damaging its keel or hull. 291
  • Her scroll-based techniques are limited by the contracts and scrolls available to her. 63 64
  • A ninja whose name is recorded on her Spirit Summoning Scroll can summon Merry with her consent. 49
  • She can enlarge the Spirit Summoning Scroll when preparing to use it. 63
  • Her enormous-ship sealing feat uses a specially made giant scroll supplied by Xi Yan; the upper size limit of her sealing remains unknown. 501

Wind Force

Merry’s awakened Wind Force grants her control over air currents for movement, sensing, defense, and offense. It is an instinctive spirit ability rather than Wind Release ninjutsu or a Devil Fruit power. 329 473

  • Flies herself and allies through the air, including emergency transport for Sanji and Marines. 459
  • Creates windless zones around the crew’s ship during non-combat travel. 420
  • Listens to distant conversations and sends messages through wind currents. 351 459
  • Returns incoming cannonballs to enemy ships and destroys pursuing warships’ sails to prevent pursuit. 352
  • Blasts a large hole through a Navy warship’s lower hull with a gust of wind. 409
  • Clears poisonous gas with Wind Impact, opening a safe passage through the gas. 476
  • Uses controlled airflow to lift and hold heavy structures, including the Research Institute’s great gate. 453
  • Forms Wind Barrier defenses capable of blocking Dellinger’s physical attacks, though Diamante’s Haki-infused Flying Slash cuts through them. 615 675
  • Senses the movement of speed-focused opponents through changes in the wind, allowing her to anticipate Dellinger’s attacks. 615
  • Extinguishes flames on injured Marines and strikes a small dragon hard enough to smash it into a wall. 459
  • Exercises sufficiently fine control to distribute cooking seasonings evenly without wasting them. 415
  • Cushions physical impacts, including Diamante’s kick and her fall after Doflamingo strikes her out of the air. This mitigation does not prevent Doflamingo from overpowering her. 674 728
  • Carries groups of Dressrosa civilians through the air to the central area and later transports the exhausted Luffy. 719 723
  • Her wind power is weakened underwater. 390

Her defenses have clear limits. Mahavise’s 50-Ton Vise breaks through her Wind Barrier, forcing her to evade, while Doflamingo’s Five-Color Strings shatters it in a single strike. Doflamingo also blocks her wind attacks with Haki after restraining her. 615 728

Wind Force Techniques

  • Water Tornado — Forms a horizontal underwater tornado that blows opponents away; used against Hody while escorting Luffy toward Noah’s Ark. 390
  • Power of the Storm — Fires a spinning tempest at a reinforced factory gate, though its destructive force was insufficient to break through. 648
  • Wind Bow — Creates a massive bow of wind; used to launch Zoro at high speed. 705
  • Wind-enhanced arrows / Wind Arrow — Accelerates arrows with green wind energy, creating impacts strong enough to blast craters and force Diamante to take her seriously. An earlier use destroys incoming cannonballs through its wind pressure. Merry considers one such arrow powerful enough that ordinary Sea Kings could not withstand it, although Diamante blocks it with a Haki-coated sword. 384 674 700
  • Wind Loss — The name used for a blue-glowing arrow fired at Doflamingo during their aerial confrontation. 728

Archery and Body Technique

Merry trained during the two-year separation to avoid being helpless in close combat and to improve her Wind Force applications.

  • Receives archery training from Grandma Za and body-technique training from Hancock. 329
  • Uses a small green snake, Xiao Qing, as a transforming bow and arrow. 384 674
  • Provides airborne fire support while maneuvering allies away from attacks. 674 700
  • Her arrows can be blocked by opponents with sufficiently strong Haki, as shown by Diamante. 700
  • Has not mastered Haki during her battle with Diamante. His suspicion that she possesses it does not establish that she can use it. 674
  • Accurately shoots the controlling threads off Rebecca, freeing her from Doflamingo before moving her to safety. 728

Spatial Storage

Merry has a personal storage space, sometimes called her “Space Pocket” or “Space Doudou.”

  • Stores her summoning scroll, tools, supplies, treasure, and weapons. 49 109 366
  • Carries items such as spare weapons for allies during battle. 675
  • Keeps Sanji’s surplus seasonings dry, protecting them from the dampness they would encounter aboard the ship. 415
  • The ability is separate from her sealing scroll techniques. 49 366

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Summoning scroll — Merry’s new vessel after the Going Merry was sealed; enables her contracts, summoning, and sealing techniques. 49 63
  • Specially made giant sealing scroll — Supplied by Xi Yan and used to store an enormous pirate ship. 501
  • Xiao Qing — A green snake hatched from an Amazon Lily snake egg; transforms into Merry’s bow and arrow. Xiao Qing attempts to attack Doflamingo when he captures Merry, but is knocked unconscious by his Conqueror’s Haki. 165 329 384 728
  • Personal storage space — Stores tools, treasure, supplies, weapons, and scrolls. 49 109
  • Hammer and repair tools — Previously used to repair the Going Merry. 49 52
  • Den Den Mushi — Used to coordinate with Robin’s group during the Dressrosa operation. 649
  • Bubble Coral — Temporarily entrusted to her by Luffy during their underwater pursuit of Hody; used to create a replacement protective bubble after Hody destroys the first. 389

Relationships

  • Xi Yan — Savior, mentor, and guardian. He preserved Merry as an independent spirit, taught her summoning and sealing techniques, and pushed her to train for the dangers facing the crew. He remains ready to intervene if she cannot protect Luffy from Doflamingo and later praises her efforts. 49 63 329 723 731
  • Monkey D. Luffy — Captain and close companion. Luffy treats Merry as a full crewmate, protects her when missions are too dangerous, and made a pinky promise to return safely from Impel Down. Merry carries him during his Haki recovery and is prepared to risk her life to protect him; he returns in time to shield her from Doflamingo’s attack. 54 178 723 726 729
  • Straw Hat Pirates — Merry considers the crew her nakama and wants to continue adventuring alongside them. The crew consistently recognizes her as a valued partner rather than merely a ship’s spirit. 49 351
  • Nami — Shopping companion and friend. Nami teaches Merry about saving money, while Merry assists her with travel, deliveries, and wind-based transport. 365 366 352
  • Usopp — Supportive crewmate who understands her connection to ships and helps praise and encourage her abilities. They jointly defend the Thousand Sunny from Marine attacks. 46 127 352
  • Grandma Za — Archery instructor and caretaker during Merry’s stay on Amazon Lily; provides her with the snake egg that becomes Xiao Qing. 165 329
  • Boa Hancock — Body-technique instructor who supports Merry’s growth and self-preservation training. 329
  • Perona — Older-sister-like ally who praises Merry in battle and helps her stay calm when provoked. Their friendship develops despite Merry initially remembering her as an enemy from Thriller Bark. Perona encourages her ambition to become a great pirate and affectionately reassures her about Bartolomeo’s representation of the Going Merry. 335 501 614 615 762
  • Rebecca — Dressrosa ally. Merry rescues her from Diamante’s opening strike, supports her with arrows, and provides her with a replacement sword. She later frees Rebecca from Doflamingo’s controlling threads and accompanies Luffy to help her reunite with Kyros. 674 675 728 746
  • Silvers Rayleigh — Trusted ally who accompanies her back to Sabaody Archipelago before the crew’s reunion. Merry helps him carry materials while he coats the Thousand Sunny. 335 351
  • Franky — Crewmate whom Merry protects during the Factory operation. She respects his determination to fight Senor Pink alone and leaves to assist Robin’s group when her support is needed elsewhere. 614 648 649
  • Nico Robin — Trusted crewmate and battlefield collaborator. Merry responds to her request for transport during the Dressrosa operation and later fights beside her in the Flower Field. 649 658 700
  • Trafalgar Law — Allied pirate who is repeatedly astonished by her ship-control and sealing abilities. Although outwardly critical of her willingness to face Doflamingo, he does not want her to die and invokes Luffy’s concern in an attempt to dissuade her. 486 501 726
  • G5 Marines — Temporary allies whose lives Merry helps save at Punk Hazard. They become fond of her, celebrate her assistance, and are surprised to learn that she is willingly a Straw Hat pirate rather than a kidnapped child. 453 454 456 459
  • Smoker — Marine opponent who covertly assists during Luffy’s recovery. Merry recognizes his voice and suspects his involvement when smoke conceals the group and a voice tells her to remain where she is instead of confronting Doflamingo. 726
  • Tontatta — Dressrosa allies who know her as “Meli Landu” through Usopp’s story. They admire her wind-powered flight, while Merry enjoys their company and enthusiastically demonstrates her abilities for them. 564
  • Bartolomeo — Enthusiastic admirer who addresses her as “Senior Merry,” supports her dream of becoming a famous pirate, and incorporates a representation of the Going Merry into his ship’s tribute to the Straw Hats. Merry accepts the fierce-looking design because it makes him happy. 649 762
  • Doflamingo — Enemy who pursues and overpowers her during the final Dressrosa battle. He captures her to force Luffy to appear and attempts to turn her companions against her before Luffy intervenes. 728 729
