First Appearance Chapter 1

Background / History

Shirogane comes from a poor family and chose Ikusei High School over Shuchiin Academy because its tuition is free and it provides a monthly living allowance. He earned scholarships throughout middle school through relentless studying. His father is unreliable, and he worries about his younger middle-school sister, Shirogane Kei, after leaving home for the school’s closed-campus life. 1 2

He considers himself an ordinary student whose results come entirely from effort rather than talent. He studied so intensely before enrollment that severe sleep deprivation gave him heavy dark circles and auditory hallucinations; a doctor initially diagnosed the condition as a consequence of his lack of sleep. 1 2 9

On his first day, the “hallucinations” manifest as an inescapable Narration System with a visible but unusable interface. Its information about the school and other students repeatedly proves accurate, leading Shirogane to suspect that the entity is living and may possess knowledge of the future. 3 5 6

Appearance

Shirogane’s severe-looking expression is largely caused by chronic fatigue rather than hostility. 1 6

  • Short blonde hair 5
  • Heavy dark circles from studying late into the night 1 6
  • A deep callus on the middle finger of his right hand from prolonged writing and study 6

Personality

Shirogane is diligent, frugal, and highly self-disciplined. He studies for long hours, carries study materials during breaks, and prepares homemade bento to reduce his expenses. Although he ranked first in middle school, he attributes his accomplishments to effort and believes he must work harder than others to remain competitive. 5 9 19 38

He initially has little experience speaking with girls and can be reserved around them, but he is fundamentally considerate. He worries about Sakayanagi’s health, holds doors open for her when she is carrying her cane and bags, and reports a voyeuristic electronics-store clerk rather than exploiting the situation. 2 6 16

Despite his personal discomfort with violence and manipulation, Shirogane is pragmatic when Class C’s advancement is at stake. He records Ryuen’s assault, uses the footage as leverage, and turns a potential enemy into a conditional ally rather than reporting him immediately. 8 9 38

Abilities & Skills

Academic Ability and Work Ethic

Shirogane compensates for what he considers average talent through extreme, consistent study.

  • Ranked first in middle school after studying intensely to earn scholarships. 1 9
  • Studies roughly 10–12 hours per day and frequently sacrifices sleep to continue working. 31 38
  • Ranked first in the Ikusei High School entrance examination. 43
  • Can quickly memorize written materials; he memorizes class data after approximately ten minutes of reading. 32

Analysis and Deduction

Shirogane constantly examines the school’s systems, students’ behavior, and available information for hidden incentives and weaknesses.

  • Deduced that the initial 100,000-point allowance was unlikely to continue and that student performance likely affects future living expenses. 5 7
  • Identified Ryuen’s academic habits from the absence of writing calluses and recognized his likely use of violence to gather intelligence. 7 9
  • Detected Horikita Suzune’s evasiveness and inferred that an SD card she had lost was important to her. 12
  • Recognized the factional division within Class A and actively investigated its members. 26 27

Strategic Negotiation

Shirogane favors transactions, leverage, and mutually beneficial arrangements over direct confrontation.

  • Used footage of Ryuen assaulting upperclassmen to force a cooperative arrangement aimed at raising Class C. 8 9
  • Kept a backup of the video rather than surrendering it, retaining protection against Ryuen’s betrayal. 9 10
  • Exchanged student-roster information with Horikita Suzune instead of providing aid without compensation. 29
  • Formed an alliance with Ichinose while privately intending to use her class’s support to advance his own class first. 44 45

Narration System

An unidentified entity communicates in Shirogane’s mind and sometimes appears as a virtual interface.

  • Provides intelligence concerning the school, students, and possible future developments. 3 6 23
  • Cannot be disabled or updated through its displayed interface. 3
  • Frequently pushes Shirogane toward romantic interactions and uses language he finds inappropriate or unsettling. 2 22
  • Its commentary becomes sparse or suspended around certain people, including Horikita Suzune and Kushida Kikyo. 5 9
