Background / History
Joy Boy’s Contingency
Pluton was hidden in Wano Country as a backup for revenge after Imu’s defeat of the Great Kingdom. It remained submerged with ancient Wano for eight hundred years. Its emergence was part of Joy Boy’s contingency, but Wang Shi’s interference brought it into the world before Sun God Nika had grown strong enough to protect or control it 386 422 484.
The Alabasta Search and Water 7 Blueprints
Crocodile spent roughly twenty years pursuing clues to Pluton in Alabasta. His search led him, Cobra, and Nico Robin into the Nefertari royal tomb, where a Poneglyph contained information about the weapon. Robin refused to disclose that information to him 122 123 411.
The World Government already knew that Pluton’s blueprints were in Water 7 and had searched for them for years. Wang Shi obtained them after Aramaki captured their keeper, Franky, removing the documents from Franky’s mechanical body. He handed them to Robin for translation and recruited Franky to incorporate Pluton components into the Exile Emperor 115 278.
Exposure and Retrieval in Wano
Wang Shi disclosed Pluton’s location to Big News Morgans to provoke upheaval in the New World. Kaido had intended to retrieve the weapon after completing his army of Zoan users; the disclosure forced him to accelerate his plans and ally with Big Mom 362 386.
Releasing Pluton required breaching Wano’s protective walls and draining its inland sea. Orochi opposed the destruction of the natural waterfall barrier, but the two Emperors defeated his forces. Once the water receded, Queen led the Beasts Pirates’ and Big Mom Pirates’ scientific teams in cleaning and studying the warship 383 400 409.
The exposed weapon drew competing plans:
- World Government — mobilized Marines, Shichibukai, and affiliated nations, offering payments and Heavenly Tribute reductions to secure additional forces 371 379.
- Revolutionary Army — resolved to destroy Pluton rather than allow either the Emperors or the World Government to possess it. Dragon feared that the Government could eventually manufacture additional warships 376.
- Du Feld — financed bounty hunters and assassins seeking an opportunity to seize it 379.
- Black Arm Zephyr — planned to detonate Mount Fuji with Dyna Stones, destroying Pluton and the two Emperors’ alliance. Kuzan rejected the plan and left the NEO Neo Marines 410.
Awakening and the Wano War
Queen could not activate the main cannon or decipher the warship’s ancient writing. Kaido nevertheless raised Pluton above Wano’s walls with Flame Clouds, frightening the approaching Government fleet before its inability to fire became apparent 410 411 416.
Big Mom bypassed the activation problem by turning Pluton into a Homie. She contributed part of her own soul, reclaimed soul power from fifty thousand Homie soldiers, and harvested additional lifespans from terrified combatants. The resulting consciousness remained low-level despite this enormous investment 414 415 416.
Pluton fired twice during the battle. The first shot annihilated the Five Elders and a section of Wano’s defensive wall, though the Elders subsequently regenerated. The second devastated the pursuing Holy Knights, vaporized part of ancient Wano, and exhausted the Homie’s remaining strength 416 417 418 419.
Repeated attacks left the hull covered in sword wounds and enormous holes. When Kaido abandoned its defense to confront Akainu, Big Mom attacked Pluton and ordered it to self-destruct rather than surrender it. The Holy Knights switched from damaging the ship to preserving it, and Imu ultimately intervened through Gunko to stop its fall 422 427 429.
Capture and the Energy Deadlock
Joy Boy’s released Conqueror’s Haki expelled Imu and most of the summoned Government elites, temporarily suppressing Devil Fruit abilities across the battlefield. Fighting over Pluton resumed afterward, with Marines, pirates, and the Revolutionary Army involved 432 433 434.
Bullet successfully fused with the warship and moved it toward the sea. The Three Emperor Alliance secured Pluton, while Blackbeard used its potential firepower to threaten Wang Shi and Dragon against pursuit 446.
Possession did not mean full control of its weapons. Bullet could move the hull but could not fire the energy-depleted cannon. Big Mom eventually upgraded Pluton into an advanced Homie, yet its attempts to use different energy sources failed. Wang Shi meanwhile waited for Vegapunk’s Mother Flame, intending to use it to restart the weapon 457 464.
Reactivation and Later Deployment
Pluton was reactivated during the Egghead operation. At Wang Shi’s command, it joined the Ark Maxim, the Exile Emperor’s new Pluton cannon, and several fighters’ ranged attacks in a bombardment of the Five Elders and Holy Knights. Egghead was erased, leaving an abyss whose annihilation effects prevented seawater from flowing back in 474 475.
In a later naval battle, Imu redirected Pluton’s cannon upward just as it fired. Kong then struck the cannon and temporarily disabled the weapon 486.
Pluton was subsequently operational again. Wang Shi deployed it alongside Uranus after days of conventional excavation failed to penetrate the Red Line; a few shots completed a tunnel connecting Paradise and the New World 526.
Appearance
- Massive ancient battleship — larger and more imposing than Loki’s War King 411.
- Homie facial features — develops eyes and a mouth on its prow upon awakening; ears and a nose are also described 415.
- Rotating main cannon — can turn to track targets and rapidly redirect its aim under orders 418 486.
- Visible exhaustion — its eyes become weary after firing; after its second Wano shot, they are weak and half-rolled back 416 418.
Personality
As a low-level Homie, Pluton is simple-minded and communicates through short expressions of hunger and pain. It follows Big Mom’s basic commands but cannot answer her questions about what it needs to consume 416.
It also displays self-preservation: while heavily damaged, it gathers its remaining strength and attempts to target the Figarland family members who hurt it most. When they scatter, it becomes confused until Big Mom supplies a new target 418.
Abilities & Skills
Annihilation Cannon
Pluton’s main cannon produces destructive blasts capable of erasing large areas and triggering secondary disasters 416 418.
- First Wano shot: destroys part of the defensive wall and raises a seawater mushroom cloud five to six thousand meters high, followed by a tsunami and earthquake 416.
- Second Wano shot: nearly annihilates the remaining protective walls and completely vaporizes one side of ancient Wano 418.
- Threat to immortal opponents: annihilates the Five Elders before their regeneration; its later fire contributes to damage that destroys bodies and the immortal power within them 417 475.
- Excavation: used with Uranus to blast through the remaining Red Line during tunnel construction 526.
Homie Consciousness
Big Mom’s Soul-Soul Fruit animates the warship and gives her command over its consciousness 415.
- Receives simple instructions and can aim and fire in response 416 418.
- Expresses hunger, pain, and exhaustion 416 418.
- Requires extraordinary quantities of soul power to animate and later develop into an advanced Homie 414 464.
- Improved intelligence does not itself replenish the main cannon’s energy 464.
Hull Durability and Movement
Pluton survives eight hundred years underwater and withstands sustained attacks from powerful combatants, although its defenses are not absolute 411 418.
- External flight: Kaido’s Flame Clouds carry the warship; the Homie itself cannot fly 416.
- Fusion-based movement: Bullet merges with its shell and moves it toward the sea 446 457.
- Damage vulnerability: magma attacks and massive slashes injure the hull; direct attacks can also disable the main cannon 418 422 486.
Energy and Amplification Limits
- Severe depletion: its first Wano shot leaves it hungry and unable to retaliate; its second consumes its remaining strength 416 418.
- Unknown fuel: neither Big Mom nor Queen initially understands the required energy source 416.
- Mother Flame: Wang Shi identifies Vegapunk’s creation as the means to restart Pluton 464.
- More-More Fruit amplification: Byrnndi World increases the cannon’s power only slightly during the Egghead attack, suffering extreme strain and bleeding from his eyes, ears, mouth, and nose 475.
