Background / History

Aramaki lost his parents at a young age and joined the Taya Kingdom’s Guard Army reserves to survive. He worked his way upward, but remained a senior police officer at thirty-seven. Nobles and officers appropriated much of his record of achievements, leaving the king unaware of his true value. Having never left the South Blue, Aramaki himself lacked a clear measure of his strength because every pirate he encountered seemed weak 64 66.

While protecting Duke Harada’s daughter, Harada Shinagawa, he accidentally grabbed her waist to save her. The incident offended both Shinagawa and Prince Qizhi, who was infatuated with her. Aramaki was imprisoned without resisting, believing his colleagues would help him and Shinagawa would eventually forgive him. In reality, the prince had sentenced him to life imprisonment, while former colleagues severed ties and some supplied accusations against him 59 65.

Denied food, he began draining prisoners through his Devil Fruit. What started as survival became a habit he struggled to control: he planned to consume one prisoner every three days, then broke his own schedule the following morning. Even so, he repeatedly extended how long he was willing to remain imprisoned if doing so preserved his police position 63 65.

Wang Shi visited Taya after learning of his imprisonment and paid one billion Belly to secure his release. Offered both recognition and a route into imperial nobility, Aramaki pledged allegiance to him and changed his nationality to the Goa Empire. Rather than accept an immediate dukedom, he chose to begin as a baron and advance through merit 64 65 66 67.

Appearance

  • Sunglasses: Removes and cleans them while boasting about his natural talent; later lowers them while questioning the captured Enel 68 239.
  • Military uniform and rank medals: Proudly displays his Goa Empire uniform and baron’s medal around the Taya capital. Receives a marquess’s medal after the West Blue campaign 67 98.
  • Gemstone jewelry: Wears numerous gemstone rings and necklaces after collecting the campaign’s spoils 98.
  • Toothpick: Bites down on one while confronting Enel 239.

Personality

Aramaki pursues power, rank, and the security of standing above others. Before joining Goa, he wished Taya’s king shared Wang Shi’s expansionist ambition and imagined earning a countship or dukedom under a more enterprising ruler. His acceptance of the existing hierarchy was so strong that he initially tolerated wrongful imprisonment rather than rebel or become a pirate 35 60 63.

Wang Shi’s rescue redirects that obedience into intense personal loyalty. Aramaki regards him as his “sun” and particularly admires his decisive, domineering conduct. He readily risks himself for promotions, treats wanted enemies as opportunities for advancement, and insists that companions use his current noble title 67 86 89 91.

He is boastful, competitive, and frequently insensitive. His casual account of awakening Haki frustrates companions who must train for it, and he interrupts the crew’s emotional reunions through Pato’s Transformation Leaves to ask whether the copies can fight. Issho’s achievements also spur him to seek greater recognition 68 131 164 181.

His ruthlessness does not amount to unconditional devotion to the Celestial Dragons. Rescued before enduring years of imprisonment, he retains some police-officer compassion under Wang Shi and Issho’s influence and considers the Celestial Dragons’ slaughter competition excessively cruel. He nevertheless enjoys draining enemies and later consumes battlefield corpses indiscriminately in pursuit of awakening 71 232 314.

He also enjoys wealth and female attention. After the Sabaody slave-market raids, he takes pride in being admired as a liberator by rescued women and considers taking some as wives or concubines 98 282.

Abilities & Skills

Woods-Woods Fruit

Aramaki’s Logia power produces forests, trees, flowers, and vines, allowing him to overwhelm opponents while drawing nourishment from them 67 86.

  • Elemental defense: Ignores Van Augur’s ordinary bullets and Eric’s Wind Blades without needing Armament Haki 67.
  • Binding and impalement: Uses finger-grown vines to restrain, pierce, and drain multiple targets. Easily defeats Zoro and Saka together without moving from his position 67.
  • Nutrient absorption: Drains victims into desiccated bodies and can leave captives alive but too weakened to resist 86 91.
  • Sustenance: Becomes accustomed to absorbing nutrients rather than eating meals; says the Chongtu Island and Alabasta battlefields supplied more than enough food 152.
  • Flight: Grows a large flower from his back and spins it rapidly to fly 77 95.
  • Construction: Creates wooden furniture and a vine-built battle arena; helps embed Seastone into the Exile Emperor’s underside 90 140.
  • Environmental restoration: Restores a damaged forest after the confrontation with Dragon 152.

Regeneration and Semi-Awakening

His fruit provides exceptional recovery and endurance. After more than three hours of sparring with Spaden, Aramaki boasts that even Mythical Zoan recovery cannot match his Woods-Woods Fruit 197.

  • Rebuilds his forest after Ace’s large-scale fire attack and immediately produces an even larger technique 180.
  • Accumulates life energy by draining Impel Down prisoners, reaching semi-awakening 308.
  • At that stage, converts air and sunlight into power in addition to drawing energy from bodies and the ground 308.
  • His seemingly “immortal” regeneration remains conditional on his strength not running out 308.
  • Continues consuming corpses at Marineford to pursue awakening; the provided account does not confirm a completed awakening 314.

Named Techniques

Technique Application
Fireproof Forest Produces a forest that blocks Ace’s initial Fire Fist attack 175.
Thousand Vine Piercing Identifies it as his own battlefield technique when joining Issho in suppressing Alabasta’s rebellion 131.
Deep Forest Emergence Generates a large forest attack; Ace’s Great Flame Commandment: Ghost Fire burns it almost completely away 179 180.
Super Deep Forest Emergence Replaces the destroyed forest with a larger, denser mass of vegetation 180.
Forest God: Thousand-Hand Emperor Forms a thousand-armed giant from trees and vines. Its face resembles Wang Shi, and its foremost fists carry dense Armament Haki 180.
Diamond Meteor Hammer Restrains Jozu with vines and swings him as a weapon against Whitebeard’s fleet 177.

Armament Haki

Aramaki naturally awakened Armament Haki and uses it extensively with his plant attacks 68.

  • Makes vines so tough that Zoro and Saka cannot cut them, even when their strikes produce sparks 67.
  • Can pierce opponents’ Armament defenses 84.
  • Produces black vines that penetrate Kuma’s Ursus Shock and remain intact after the explosion; Kuma judges his Armament Haki no weaker than his own 147.
  • Cuts off the suppressive sea aura between Seastone cage bars, allowing him to elementalize through the gaps. This demonstrates resistance to the cage’s emitted aura, not immunity to direct Seastone contact 122.
  • Helps Wang Shi test how different Haki strengths resist time banishment and Time Slash 68.

Observation Haki

His Observation Haki also awakened naturally and later improved with Issho’s help 68 84.

  • Uses that improvement to prepare for opponents who can bypass ordinary Logia defenses with Haki 84.
  • His perception does not eliminate carelessness: Jozu lands a powerful surprise collision, and Spaden’s soul-affecting purple flames initially catch him off guard 175 196.

Combat Experience and Instruction

Despite his natural strength, Aramaki initially lacks experience against top-tier opponents because the South Blue offered few comparable challengers 64 84.

  • Serves as a sparring partner and Haki instructor for Wang Shi’s group, while admitting he does not know how to teach effectively 68.
  • Uses binding and harassment rather than a bulky treant form during the initial group attack on Kaido 199.
  • Coordinates his Thousand-Hand Giant with Issho’s gravity to hammer Kaido 200.
  • Restrains his killing when Wang Shi wants enemies captured alive, including Bege’s gang and Baroque Works ability users 78 130.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Goa Empire military uniform and noble medals — Visible markers of the status he repeatedly asks others to acknowledge 67 98.
  • Sunglasses — Regularly worn, including during Haki instruction and Enel’s interrogation 68 239.
  • Gemstone rings and necklaces — Acquired among the West Blue campaign’s spoils 98.
  • Bounty notices — Uses them to identify defeated enemies and calculate their value toward promotion 86.

Relationships

  • Wang Shi — Rescuer, sovereign, and object of fervent loyalty. Pays his ransom, grants him nobility, and guides the development of his forest techniques 67 180.
  • Issho — Fellow imperial powerhouse, combat partner, and rival for recognition. Improves Aramaki’s Observation Haki and frequently coordinates gravity attacks with his vines, though their attitudes toward war and civilians differ 75 84 90 200 282.
  • Zoro — Sparring partner and frequent target of title-related teasing. Disapproves of Aramaki’s enjoyment of killing pirates 67 71 91.
  • Saka — Sparring partner whom Aramaki corrects for failing to address him as “Baron Aramaki” 67.
  • Eric — Flatters Aramaki’s strength and new rank; also helps explain the imperial promotion system to Issho 75 91 122.
  • Spaden — Fellow imperial noble and sparring partner. His Mythical Zoan’s purple flames force Aramaki to take their match seriously 196 197.
  • Yazhu — Talking crow coerced into becoming his pet and underling. Accompanies him into battle and announces his titles 113 131 187.
  • Harada Shinagawa — Former protection charge whose offended reaction leads to his imprisonment. Flees temporarily after his recruitment, although Aramaki shows no immediate intention of taking revenge 65 66 67.
  • Prince Qizhi — Orders his life imprisonment; leaves Taya temporarily out of fear after Wang Shi recruits him 65 66.
  • Rescued women of Sabaody — More than a dozen former slaves choose to follow him for protection, citizenship, and possible marriage; include noble daughters and princesses of fallen kingdoms 282.
  • Aokiji Kuzan — Tournament opponent whom Aramaki begs to concede so he can enter the final four; Aokiji reluctantly agrees 542.

Story Role / Major Arcs

West Blue Campaign

  • Executes and drains pirates on Twin Snake Island, alarming the local underworld and provoking Zoro’s disgust 71.
  • Captures Capone Bege after the crime boss rejects Wang Shi’s summons 78.
  • Pursues high-bounty opponents during the attempted mediation between the Flower and Mulberry Kingdoms, killing the 308-million-Belly daimyo Nabeshima Fiya 86.
  • Helps crush the Mulberry Kingdom’s samurai forces and weaken captured commanders for ransom 88 90 91.
  • Enthusiastically gives a reporter an account of his service to Wang Shi; later celebrates the newspaper’s “Marquess of Impalement” nickname 90 93.
  • Oversees prisoner exchanges on Chongtu Island and hopes the ransom teams will attack, giving him grounds to capture them again. The kingdoms instead resume fighting each other 95.

Alabasta Intervention

  • Chases Mr. 2 through dozens of streets despite repeated disguises, eventually capturing and draining him while preserving his life under Wang Shi’s orders 130.
  • Joins Issho against the Rebel Army and captures Koza and numerous rebel leaders 131 133.
  • With Cobra’s permission, converts fallen soldiers’ remains into a forest. Both armies name it the Forest of War to commemorate the civil war; only Wang Shi is told how much nourishment Aramaki extracted 133.

Whitebeard Pirates and Kaido

  • Binds Jozu, swings him against the fleet, and defeats the captain McGuy in a single strike 177.
  • Fights Ace and Jozu together. Ace destroys his initial forest, but Aramaki rebuilds it and counters Flame Emperor with the Thousand-Hand Emperor 179 180.
  • Ultimately earns the reputation of defeating both commanders, mocking Ace’s flames as suitable for Whitebeard’s birthday candles 182.
  • His prolonged sparring match with Spaden attracts Kaido. He subsequently joins the four-on-one battle used to train the empire’s strongest fighters 196 197 199 200 201.

Imperial Expansion

  • Leads Goa nobles and North Blue underworld figures onto Pantanal Island alongside Spaden during the formation of Wang Shi’s wider underworld alliance 213.
  • Leads the seizure of Jaya and toys with Bellamy and Sarchies when they invoke Doflamingo’s protection 233 234.
  • Captures Enel with Armament-coated vines and mocks the self-proclaimed god for not knowing Armament Haki 239.
  • Takes part in the Sabaody lawless-zone purge, after which rescued women choose to remain under his protection 282.

Impel Down and Marineford

  • Drains most prisoners from Impel Down’s first four levels after screening separates out ability users, using their life energy to reach semi-awakening 298 308.
  • Leaves with Wang Shi’s forces for Marineford and consumes corpses on the battlefield in pursuit of further awakening 308 314.

World’s Strongest Martial Arts Tournament

  • Faces Aokiji and prioritizes reaching the top four over winning outright through combat.
  • Begs Aokiji to let him advance; Aokiji agrees reluctantly because he has little interest in continuing through further matches 542.

Notable Quotes

“If I were fighting and earning merits under an ‘enterprising’ emperor like Wang Shi, how comfortable that would be.” 35

“Isn’t this something you awaken on your own and just get stronger at by yourself?”
— On Armament and Observation Haki 68

“I don’t care whether you’re a lawful naval pillar or a clan daimyo. As long as you’ve got a bounty, you’re this Marquess’s enemy!” 86

“Ahahahaha!! His Majesty blesses me! My ability has reached a semi-awakened state!” 308

Trivia

  • The narration describes his hypothetical Marine ideology as “Desperate Justice”; in Goa, that desperation is directed toward earning noble titles 86.
  • Bartolomeo’s elaborate self-introductions inspire him to collect more titles and have Yazhu announce them 187.
  • His earliest opponents give him a misleading impression of strength: Taya’s officials assume he merely matches the South Blue’s strongest pirates, while he has never encountered anyone there capable of challenging him 64.
