Background / History

Accounts of Sun Wukong's origin describe him as an Intelligent Stone Monkey born from a stone on Flower-Fruit Mountain that absorbed the essences of heaven, earth, sun, and moon. He later studied under Patriarch Subhuti and became a demon cultivator of exceptional power. 785

After rejecting Heavenly Court authority, Sun Wukong led demons in open war, breached the South Heaven Gate, and wrought havoc in Heaven. The version circulated by the Heavenly Court portrays him as an uncontrollable demon who was later sent on the western scripture pilgrimage rather than executed. 785

He completed the journey west and received the title of Victorious Fighting Buddha. Tang Luo recalls relying on Wukong's rescues fewer than eighty times during their pilgrimage. 1

In the altered pilgrimage encountered by Tang Luo, Sun Wukong is trapped under a Tightening Headband Spell that causes agony and suppresses his strength. Despite this, he refuses submission, fights Tang Luo, and continues west with the replacement scripture-seeking party. 590 591

Sun Wukong later learns that the apparent gods and Buddhas around him are demons in disguise, while his journey has been manipulated as an unending cycle of despair and obedience. Even beneath Tathagata's immense palm, he continues resisting rather than kneeling. 605
