Background

Before becoming a Fishman, Li Yuan regarded his life as mediocre and meaningless. He was considered timid, quiet, gentle, and considerate by a high-school desk mate, but struggled to assert himself or find value in himself 21.

His family life was hostile. His stepmother treated him as a burden, his younger half-brother received the family’s attention, and Li Yuan’s image was torn from the household photograph. After becoming a Fishman, he returned to take his belongings and no longer feared his stepmother’s threats 21.

Li Yuan’s transformation gave him a new purpose: fulfilling Chen Ye’s will. He later came to distinguish blind obedience from understanding an order and acting on one’s own judgment 21.

Appearance

Li Yuan can assume a human appearance, but his natural body is a monstrous symbiotic ocean life-form.

Personality

Li Yuan is methodical, patient, and intensely cautious. He prefers shaping an opponent’s perceptions, exploiting emotional weaknesses, and preparing contingencies over relying on direct force. His strategy against Ye Long—provocation, feigned weakness, talisman bait, and delayed petrification—exemplifies his preference for an overwhelmingly controlled victory 195 196.

He is capable of extreme cruelty. He orders massacres, converts humans into Fishmen, uses people as pieces in larger plans, and openly describes himself as a monster rather than a protector of humanity 16 48 624. Yet he values brief moments of peace, remains protective of Li Heng, and is visibly exhausted by endless scheming and suspicion 393 543 544.

Li Yuan believes power reduces most relationships to domination or submission. Even so, he recognizes resistance as a force capable of overturning stronger powers and argues that no order is eternal 146 508.

Li Yuan detects the police operation approaching Nanyan Hotel, warns the Queen Bee, and uses Fishmen to isolate and eliminate the police squads. He personally kills Chu Yang after the operation’s conclusion 13 14 16.

Rise of the Sea King

He expands the Fishmen’s reach through flooding, conversion, and coordinated attacks. During the desert conflict, he fights Angel and Ye Long simultaneously, survives apparent annihilation by rebuilding himself through his Priests and Fishmen, and establishes himself as a major Fourth Tier threat 112 155 156.

Ye Long’s Petrification

Li Yuan kills Ye Long’s mother to provoke Ye Long into an irrational attack. He deliberately allows Ye Long to believe he has stolen Li Yuan’s source of power while the Book of the Dead’s petrification curse accumulates unnoticed. Once Ye Long is fully petrified, Li Yuan crushes him into dust 194 195 196.

Fifth Tier Ascension and World Unification

After evolving to the Fifth Tier, Li Yuan’s mental power becomes his defining advantage. He later descends into reality, forces powerful Sequences to submit, and unifies the world while preserving the Age of Panic for his own long-term purposes 270 396 397.

Ocean Empire and the Sequence Game

Li Yuan rules beneath the sea, forms a political union with Hydra, and repeatedly plans around conflicts between the Central Continent and Outer Sea factions. His preferred “victory formula” is to let opposing factions destroy one another before uniting the survivors 407 508.

Guidance of Wei Jiu

Li Yuan secretly assists the reincarnated 009, Wei Jiu, by explaining Crowns, helping him evade Yi Jing, and directing him toward Divine Treasure. His interest is ultimately self-serving, and Wei Jiu becomes increasingly suspicious of his motives 623 624 634.

Divine Treasure and Final Conflict

Li Yuan reaches the Sixth Tier through the Gate of Divine Treasure and demonstrates Meme Contamination by turning many enemies into apparent allies. When 009 resists, Li Yuan faces him in the Star Sea Domain, using soul attacks, manifestations, stellar constructs, and sealed artifacts. He eventually admits defeat and allies with 001 to stop 009’s Chaos Behemoth form 644 648 649 650.

Death

After Chen Ye’s death, 009 uses the Infinite Chapter to summon nine Seventh Tier beings. 009 kills Li Yuan with a galaxy-tearing Chaos Sword while Li Yuan protects his people 723.
