Background / History
Alliance with Feng Yao
Orochimaru operates from the Land of Fields, where his underground base and Sound Ninja are located. Feng Yao initially avoids recruiting him because of his Kage-comparable strength, forbidden techniques, and likelihood of turning an unwelcome visitor into an experimental specimen 6 16.
When Feng Yao eventually proposes a joint attack on Konoha, he reserves the right to kill Fifth Hokage Danzo. Orochimaru accepts, then immediately attacks to test his prospective ally. Feng Yao defeats him and his intervening subordinates, but offers a truce rather than killing him. Despite the defeat, Orochimaru becomes fixated on acquiring Feng Yao’s body as a vessel 16 17.
Orochimaru proposes using Sunagakure’s declining resources and fear of Danzo to arrange an invasion during the Chunin Exams. In negotiations with Rasa, he first demands Konoha’s techniques and freedom from interference with his research. When those terms are rejected, he instead requests help subduing Feng Yao—specifically insisting that Feng Yao be taken alive 18 20 21 22.
Konoha Invasion and Capture
During the invasion, Orochimaru orders the Sound Four to establish the Four Violet Flames Formation. He and Kimimaro eliminate Danzo’s bodyguards before joining Rasa against the Hokage. Danzo secretly rewrites Orochimaru’s will with Kotoamatsukami, making him attack and severely wound his own ally 33.
After Danzo’s death, Orochimaru attacks Feng Yao. He controls the reincarnated Hashirama Senju, Tobirama Senju, and Kagami Uchiha by inserting charm-bearing kunai into their heads and suppressing their consciousnesses 35 36.
Jiraiya and the two Great Toad Sages force Orochimaru to reveal the Eight Branches Technique. They immobilize and dismantle his enormous serpent form, but Jiraiya hesitates to kill his former comrade. Feng Yao exploits that opening, teleports to a previously placed Flying Thunder God mark, and absorbs Orochimaru into the Kamui Dimension 39 40.
Unable to escape the dimension, Orochimaru attacks a masked Uchiha who enters it, hoping to force him to provide a way out. The opponent is Obito, whose intangibility defeats Orochimaru’s attacks. Feng Yao intervenes and takes Orochimaru away 42.
Joining Immortal
Orochimaru initially relies on his Cursed Seals as insurance against death. Feng Yao undermines that confidence by threatening to kill the disciples carrying his Heaven and Earth Cursed Seals, then offers him a different route toward his ambitions: becoming his right-hand man and researching the world’s origins and the ultimate life form 43.
Orochimaru accepts and receives the Earth ring, marking him as Immortal’s second-in-command. Feng Yao entrusts him with Konoha’s stolen technique scrolls, Shisui’s eyes, and Danzo’s severed arm. Orochimaru promises to turn the collected techniques into a powerful army within two years and orders Kimimaro to respect Feng Yao as he respects him 43.
His recruitment also brings Otogakure’s facilities and personnel under Feng Yao’s control. Orochimaru takes responsibility for the stolen funds and becomes one of Immortal’s principal researchers, logistical managers, and frontline fighters 44.
Building Immortal’s Strength
Orochimaru helps capture Tsunade, summoning Manda and supplying chakra for Feng Yao’s Myriad Self Great Hand Seal. Back at his laboratory, he extracts Hashirama’s cells from Danzo’s arm in a single day and transplants them into Feng Yao 50 51 52.
He subsequently strengthens Immortal’s members with cellular transplants and Cursed Seals. Neji’s successful treatment reveals that Feng Yao’s cells are compatible with Jugo’s bodily fluids, allowing the Cursed Seal transplantation success rate to reach 100 percent under the new procedure 55 56.
Accompanying Feng Yao and Kabuto into Kusagakure, Orochimaru helps capture shinobi for experiments and reincarnation sacrifices. He then applies the Blood Slave Curse Bond to the village’s leader and ninja to enforce their submission 58 59 60.
Akatsuki Conflict and Research
Orochimaru leads Tsunade, Tayuya, and Sai during the attack on Amegakure. His group fights Konan before Itachi and Kisame arrive. The encounter leaves Orochimaru critically injured, yet his first question upon waking concerns whether Feng Yao obtained the Rinnegan 55 65 68 74.
Feng Yao makes the captured Rinnegan available for research and later summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Orochimaru studies both the statue and its cultivated Hashirama tissue, greatly expanding his understanding of Hashirama’s cells. After learning the origins of ninjutsu and Akatsuki’s purpose in gathering the Tailed Beasts, he excitedly proposes gathering their power as well 74 76 89 94.
At his new laboratory, Orochimaru uses cell-based clones as sacrifices to reincarnate Uchiha clan members. Feng Yao then restores them to life with Tenseiga, providing living research subjects. Orochimaru develops a drug that stimulates an Uchiha’s brain to release the special chakra needed for early Mangekyō Sharingan awakening 112 113 114 119.
Ten-Tails Conflict
After learning how close Feng Yao came to death against Madara, Orochimaru volunteers for more field operations. Feng Yao had previously declined those requests because he considered Orochimaru’s scientific results more valuable to Immortal’s overall strength 173.
Orochimaru later brings the Reaper Mask to the battlefield, undoes the Reaper Death Seal, and reincarnates Minato Namikaze so Feng Yao can extract the Yin half of the Nine-Tails’ chakra. He also summons Kinkaku and Ginkaku, who possess additional Nine-Tails chakra 192 193.
He fights Obito alongside Minato and attempts to kill him. Naruto persuades him to stop by arguing that defeating Madara is more urgent. Orochimaru agrees on the condition that Minato remove Obito from the Ten-Tails’ vicinity, preserving Feng Yao’s order that Obito must not be allowed to absorb it 197 199.
Appearance
- Hair: Long and black 16 43.
- Eyes: Golden, slit-shaped pupils 16.
- Complexion: Deathly pale 16.
- Facial markings: Purple eyeshadow extending toward his nose 16.
- Accessories: Blue, magatama-shaped earrings 16.
- Presence: Described as sinister and vicious during his first meeting with Feng Yao 16.
Personality
Orochimaru is manipulative, opportunistic, and willing to betray allies for research. He accepts Feng Yao’s alliance while secretly arranging to capture his body, reasoning that its unusual constitution could help him master every technique in the world 16 17 21.
His pursuit of immortality serves his insatiable curiosity: an unlimited lifespan would give him time to uncover the world’s truths. He also connects that pursuit to war, bereavement, and his belief that life is fragile. He rejects Konan’s claims of divine authority and explicitly places his faith in science rather than gods 39 43 68.
Scientific discoveries can overwhelm his concern for personal safety. Even while critically injured, he prioritizes the captured Rinnegan over his own condition. Feng Yao’s knowledge of his hidden resurrection mechanism initially terrifies him, but access to forbidden techniques and unprecedented research materials makes his subsequent service enthusiastic 43 74 94 114.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Techniques
Orochimaru uses snakes for restraint, direct attacks, protection, and explosive assaults 17 33.
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: B-rank technique that produces multiple snakes for intimidation, binding, and capture 17.
- Many Snake Array: Releases countless snakes from his mouth to overwhelm an opponent, with the mass capable of detonation 17.
- Winding Evil Snake: Summons a large serpent to knock an enemy into the air 33.
- Evil Snake Wrist Explosion: Envelops a target with giant snakes and detonates them 33.
- Tongue Snake Ingestion: Uses a snake emerging from his mouth to bind or attack opponents 42 103.
- Giant Snake summoning: Provides a large defensive obstacle; he uses one to shield Rasa from Danzo’s attack 33.
Body Modification and Survival
Orochimaru’s altered body supports extreme flexibility, rapid recovery, and escape from otherwise debilitating attacks 16 42.
- Soft Physique Modification: Lets him stretch his neck, contort his body, and flatten himself against surfaces 16 42 68.
- Rapid healing: Repairs facial injuries immediately after Feng Yao strikes him 16.
- Orochimaru-Style Substitution: Sheds a damaged body and emerges in a fresh one; used against Obito’s Wood Release 33 42.
- Cursed Seal resurrection: Each seal contains part of his chakra, enabling him to return after death. Feng Yao identifies the surviving seal-bearing disciples as a vulnerability in this safeguard 42 43.
- Limit: His techniques cannot independently transport him out of the Kamui Dimension 42.
Living Corpse Reincarnation
A forbidden technique created to transfer Orochimaru’s spirit into another person’s body and extend his life 43.
- He covets Feng Yao’s constitution as an ideal vessel 17 21.
- He also places a Cursed Seal on Sasuke after identifying him as a potential reserve vessel 111.
- Access to more advanced research under Feng Yao removes his interest in Sasuke’s two-tomoe Sharingan 111.
Impure World Reincarnation
Orochimaru summons deceased shinobi and can suppress their personalities to use them as weapons 6 36.
- Controls Hashirama, Tobirama, and Kagami through charm-bearing kunai 36.
- Reincarnates Uchiha clan members using Sharingan as the deceased’s biological material and laboratory clones as sacrifices 113.
- Summons Minato, Kinkaku, and Ginkaku for Feng Yao’s Nine-Tails chakra collection 193.
- Requirements: Biological material from the deceased, a living sacrifice, and a soul available in the Pure Land 113.
- Research limitation: Reincarnated bodies alone are unsuitable for studying living Uchiha brains because their bodies are composed of dust 113.
Cursed Seals
Orochimaru derives empowering Cursed Seals from Jugo’s bodily fluids, granting recipients an inferior form of senjutsu 53.
- Combines Feng Yao’s cells and Hashirama cells with the procedure to improve recipients’ physical capabilities, chakra, and recovery 56.
- Discovers that Feng Yao’s cellular compatibility permits a 100 percent transplantation success rate with the new method 56.
- Transitioning recipients to Level Two still requires Mind Awakening Pills and a barrier established by the Sound Four 56.
- Blood Slave Curse Bond: A separate, exceptionally cruel binding seal applied using the subject’s blood; Orochimaru uses it to subjugate Kusagakure’s ninja 60.
Defensive and Transformation Techniques
- Triple Rashomon: Summons three gates that receive an attack, reduce its power, and disperse its remaining force. It successfully blocks Feng Yao’s Sage Art: Goemon 17.
- Eight Branches Technique: Transforms Orochimaru into an enormous white, eight-headed serpent larger than Manda; one of his strongest techniques 39.
- Eight Branches limitation: Jiraiya and the Great Toad Sages immobilize it with Frog Call and destroy its heads. The transformation collapses after Orochimaru is captured 39 40.
- Genjutsu: Attempts to deceive Feng Yao during their battle; Feng Yao feigns being affected 36.
- Genjutsu vulnerability: Danzo’s Kotoamatsukami alters his will without his awareness 33.
- Sage Mode: Feng Yao plans future Ryūchi Cave training for Orochimaru and Kabuto, but the supplied chapters do not confirm Orochimaru completing it 56.
Scientific and Medical Expertise
Orochimaru’s research supplies much of Immortal’s biological enhancement and ocular experimentation 44 52 89.
- Extracts usable Hashirama cells from Danzo’s arm within one day 52.
- Performs cellular and eye transplants, including implanting a Rinnegan into Feng Yao’s avatar 52 113 144.
- Creates clones containing Feng Yao’s cells and substantial quantities of Hashirama cells 113.
- Develops an early Mangekyō awakening drug by simulating the necessary stimulation in an Uchiha’s brain 114 119.
- Studies Fei’s ability to attach to others, enhance their combat power, and nullify Cursed Seals 112.
- Treats Itachi and provides a Hashirama-cell prosthetic arm; Itachi’s condition improves substantially afterward 129 130.
- Possesses extensive poison knowledge. Shizune’s toxin cannot kill him, although it forces him to release Hidden Shadow Snake Hands 47.
- Reaper Death Seal release: Uses the Reaper Mask to induce possession, then cuts open his own abdomen so the Reaper mirrors the wound and releases a sealed soul 193.
Leadership and Administration
- Commands the Sound Ninja and later leads Immortal’s team comprising Tsunade, Tayuya, and Sai 16 55.
- Manages the money Feng Yao loots from Konoha 44.
