Background / History

Clear Sky Sect leadership

Tang Chen was the Clear Sky Douluo, a Rank 99 Limit Douluo and the foremost pillar of the Clear Sky Sect. The sect's prestige and inherited ultimate arts were credited to him, while his personal strength allowed the sect to flourish and fostered an arrogant culture among its members. 12 39 73

He personally trained his grandson Tang Hao in the Clear Sky Secret Arts, including the Nine Absolute Techniques. Tang Chen intended for Tang Hao to marry Qian Xunji so the Clear Sky Sect could acquire the Six-Winged Angel martial soul; when Tang Hao initially refused, Tang Chen struck him and forced his compliance. 12

Conflict with Martial Soul Hall

Tang Chen led the Clear Sky Sect to Martial Soul Hall under the pretense of arranging an exchange between their younger generations. His actual plan was for Tang Hao, then a Soul Saint, to defeat Qian Xunji and use a wager to advance the proposed marriage alliance. 27

During the visit, Tang Chen learned that Martial Soul Hall possessed research allowing spirit rings to be absorbed beyond conventional limits. Alarmed that this could eventually surpass the Clear Sky Sect's heritage, he accused Qian Daoliu of secretly developing the method to overtake him. 36

He further provoked Qian Daoliu by questioning whether the Angel God truly existed. After sensing a genuine threat of death from Qian Daoliu's divine means, Tang Chen apologized and resolved not to return to Martial Soul City unless necessary. 36

Tang Chen nevertheless approved Qian Xunji's demand that the Clear Sky Sect's ultimate arts serve as the wager for her duel with Tang Hao. He trusted that Qian Xunji could be no more than a Soul Douluo, but was stunned when she revealed herself as a Title Douluo and defeated Tang Hao. The sect's secret techniques were subsequently surrendered. 39 41

Pursuit of godhood

Following the failed scheme, Tang Chen remained determined to become a god. He transferred the Clear Sky Sect Master position to his son, Tang Wei, while considering Tang Wei only a temporary successor until Tang Hao and Tang Xiao matured. 45

Before departing to seek divine inheritance, Tang Chen challenged Qian Daoliu and proposed a wager intended to protect the Clear Sky Sect from Martial Soul Hall while he was away. 45 52 Their battle ended in a draw, though Tang Chen privately recognized that Qian Daoliu's evasive, speed-based tactics had placed him at a disadvantage. 53

Tang Chen's departure removed the figure holding the Clear Sky Sect together. His favoritism toward Tang Hao's branch and the sect's dependence on his authority contributed to escalating internal conflicts after he left. 73 129

Slaughter City and death

Tang Chen became a successor of the Asura God King and completed eight of the nine divine trials, but ultimately failed and lost his qualifications. He was subsequently suppressed by the entity known as the King of Slaughter, leaving his own soul trapped within his body. 244 245

Spirit Hall cut Slaughter City off from resources for five months, forcing the King of Slaughter to emerge. Bibi Dong organized multiple Title Douluo to surround and kill him, considering Tang Chen and the Asura Divine Sword a major unresolved threat. 243

During the siege, the King of Slaughter's parasitism failed to maintain its suppression and Tang Chen briefly awakened. Before he could understand the situation or act, he was killed as his body was severed and his life force rapidly faded. 245

Personality

Tang Chen possessed immense pride in both his own strength and the Clear Sky Hammer. He believed Qian Daoliu was beneath him in a direct confrontation, sought powerful opponents to force further breakthroughs, and cultivated an “invincible” mentality in Tang Hao. 12 36 38

Despite this arrogance, he was not wholly reckless. During the Martial Soul Hall standoff, he recognized that its accumulated power and numerous elders could devastate the comparatively young Clear Sky Sect if conflict escalated. He withdrew rather than gamble the sect's survival. 36

Tang Chen could acknowledge an opponent's superiority when forced to confront it. After his battle with Qian Daoliu, he accepted the offered draw because continuing would likely result in his death and Qian Daoliu's crippling injury. 53
