Identity and Impersonation
- Madara and Tobi are separate people. The masked man introduced as Tobi is Obito, who claims to be Madara and operates under his name 1 5.
- The Nine-Tails Incident belongs to Obito’s activities. Minato initially calls its mastermind “Madara” because of the attacker’s Nine-Tails summoning contract, but identifies discrepancies in his concealment, fighting style, and experience 84.
- The organization called Moon is initially attributed to “Madara.” Raiga reports that it answers only to him, but the subsequent meeting shows Obito directing its members 245 250.
- The real Madara’s survival is revealed separately. He emerges from Obito’s Kamui while confronting Black Zetsu; Kuro later explicitly distinguishes him from Obito, who merely borrowed his name 305 306 317.
Background / History
Konoha and the Valley of the End
Madara stood alongside Hashirama Senju as one of the great shinobi of the Warring States Period. Together, they founded Konoha, but their shared project failed to resolve their differences. Madara eventually regarded both the village and the Uchiha clan as having rejected him: Konoha did not become the home he envisioned, while the clan entrusted to him by his younger brother Izuna no longer trusted him 271 308 405.
He survived his apparently fatal battle with Hashirama at the Valley of the End and remained hidden for decades. Black Zetsu exploited his isolation and disillusionment through an altered stone tablet, helping direct him toward the Eye of the Moon Plan 224 308.
Watching Kuro and Choosing Obito
Unable to move freely with his deteriorating body, Madara used a Shadow Clone to infiltrate Konoha and assess potential successors. He observed Kuro and Obito for six years, ultimately choosing Obito because his sincerity and emotional attachments made him easier to manipulate and more likely to awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan. Kuro, by contrast, concealed his feelings so effectively that Madara considered him troublesome to control 308 309.
Kuro nevertheless became an enduring interest. His careful use of the Uchiha clan’s accumulated knowledge, followed by his success in improving relations between the clan and Konoha, challenged Madara’s belief that both were beyond saving. Madara began reconsidering his own failures and investigating the historical foundations of the Eye of the Moon Plan 308 309.
His involvement went well beyond observation. Through disguises, Madara served as every jonin squad leader Kuro had known, including Teacher Morishita. These identities taught Kuro battlefield skills, supported him through wartime trauma, and became people he remembered with affection. Madara later explained that he wanted to show Kuro the actual Ninja World and witness his growth 342 344.
Obito’s Rescue and the Second False Death
Madara rescued Obito after the Battle of Kannabi Bridge, repairing his ruined body with Hashirama Cells. He then arranged for Obito to witness Rin’s death and used the resulting despair to promote the Infinite Tsukuyomi as an escape from a world of betrayal and suffering 215.
His subsequent death was also a deception. Madara originally intended Black Zetsu to conceal his body after an escape through Izanagi, but changed the plan after Obito awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan. Under the pretext of illusion-based training, he disclosed his broader scheme and his responsibility for Rin’s death. Obito killed him nearly a thousand times within the illusion before calming down 310.
After disconnecting from the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, Madara survived for years inside Kamui. Obito’s Shadow Clones cared for him, while chakra taken from the statue sustained his frail body until Shennong supplied the means to restore his youth and mobility 306 312.
Exposing Black Zetsu
Madara’s historical investigation uncovered evidence of an ancient being manipulating the Uchiha–Senju conflict and concealing the Ninja World’s past. His independently operating Shadow Clone allowed him to investigate without falling under Black Zetsu’s surveillance 309.
Madara and Obito eventually confronted Black Zetsu in a cavern, pinning it with the Totsuka Blade. Madara revealed that Kuro had been intended to pressure the hidden manipulator into exposing itself. He later extracted Black Zetsu from the blade’s gourd and incorporated its remains into armor with fragments of the Box of Ultimate Bliss 305 307 334 335.
Confrontation with Kuro
Madara appeared before the gathered shinobi in the Land of Rice, where he immediately recognized that Kuro had evolved his own Rinnegan by absorbing ocular power from Madara’s eyes. Kuro separated him from the assembly using a prepared Flying Thunder God formation and confronted him in the Land of Whirlpools 341 342.
There, Madara revealed his many former identities and invited Kuro to join him. His revised plan was to cast Infinite Tsukuyomi, become the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, and merge with the God Tree. By erasing its existing subconsciousness, he intended to make his own will the will of the tree—and ultimately of the Ninja World 342 343 344.
Kuro refused. Fighting alongside a reincarnated Hashirama, he struggled against Madara’s sustained Eight Gates, then used Inari God to steal the Totsuka Blade and the ocular power forming Madara’s Susanoo. At the Valley of the End, Kuro restricted Madara’s movements so Sasuke could bind him with Amaterasu enhanced by Enma. Madara acknowledged defeat internally, but Obito made him intangible before Kuro could complete a Six Paths seal 347 350 355 356.
Fourth Shinobi World War
Following his rescue, Madara admitted defeat and withdrew to prepare for the Fourth Ninja World War. From Night City, he assembled Obito, their subordinates, resurrected Uchiha, and a White Zetsu army being strengthened with Hashirama Cells 357 370.
On the battlefield, he welcomed the discovery that Kuro had empowered Hashirama sufficiently to fight him as an equal. While the armies clashed, Madara fought Hashirama and waited for Kuro to appear. With the other fronts stalled, he drove the Eight Gates to full force, unleashing pressure felt across the battlefield 375 381 386.
Kuro eventually returned as the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki and faced him alone. Madara continued increasing his output, but the combined strain of the Eight Gates and Kuro’s Space Collapse began overwhelming his regeneration 395 398.
Defeat and Final Discussion
In their final discussion, Madara defended his belief that conflicting human interests made war inevitable. Kuro countered that different leadership and circumstances could have produced another outcome, suggesting that Madara and Hashirama could have united the entire Ninja World rather than founding a single village. Madara conceded that they had lacked that vision 405.
Madara subsequently described himself as a failure others could learn from. After returning to reality, he lay immobilized amid the ruined Valley of the End, his body charred and cracked. Obito approached after Kuro left, apparently to bring Hashirama for a final meeting. Madara called Obito a traitor but declined to demand an explanation, accepting that a loss was a loss 406.
Appearance
- Restored appearance: A handsome man appearing to be in his twenties or thirties, with sharp features and thick, loose black hair reaching down his back 306.
- Eyes: A purple Rinnegan in his left eye and a red Three-Tomoe Sharingan in his right at his rejuvenated reveal 306.
- Original armor: Heavy red armor associated with the Warring States Period 306.
- Black armor: Broad pauldrons and a beast-head breastplate bearing Gū’s face, created from Black Zetsu and the Box of Ultimate Bliss fragments 335.
- Full-force Eight Gates: Blood-red hair standing like flames, crimson steam, and glowing cracks across his exposed body 394.
- After defeat: Charred, cracked skin and an inability to move or feel pain 406.
Personality
Madara is openly arrogant, competitive, and exhilarated by opponents capable of challenging him. He initially dismisses Obito’s warnings about Kuro, yet later recognizes Kuro as the only opponent since Hashirama to have earned his acknowledgment. Faced with a stronger Kuro, his caution coexists with genuine excitement rather than fear 312 353 370.
His pursuit of Infinite Tsukuyomi grows from more than an abstract desire for peace. The loss of trust in Konoha and the Uchiha clan left him convinced that the existing world could not be repaired. Even after discovering Black Zetsu’s manipulation, he continued pursuing his own version of the plan rather than abandoning it 308 309 343.
His attachment to Kuro complicates that conviction. He takes pride in Kuro’s growth and initially promises Obito that he will not kill him, but later declares Kuro the greatest threat to the plan and resolves to eliminate him. His affection as a teacher does not consistently outweigh his ideology 312 342 355.
Despite his pride, Madara can reassess his conclusions and accept defeat. Kuro’s achievements prompt years of investigation and self-examination; their final exchange leads him to acknowledge the limitations of his own vision. When Obito confronts him afterward, he refuses to excuse his loss by dwelling on betrayal 309 405 406.
Abilities & Skills
Eight Inner Gates
Madara combines all eight gates with an enhanced body capable of enduring their strain far longer than normal 312.
- Breaks Hashirama and Kuro’s combined sealing restraints through overwhelming force 347.
- Moves fast enough that Hashirama’s Sage Mode perception can barely follow him, while Hashirama’s body cannot react in time 347.
- Retains a close-range physical advantage even against Kuro’s Ten-Tails jinchūriki form 398.
- Limit: Extreme output eventually exceeds his regeneration. His flesh deteriorates, his healing slows, and continued life-force expenditure becomes fatal in prospect 355 394 398.
Body Activation and Regeneration
The Body Activation Technique developed by Tobirama restores Madara’s youth and increases his physical capabilities. The Zero-Tails offsets its dangerous backlash using negative chakra accumulated within the Box of Ultimate Bliss 312.
- Repairs injuries inflicted by Space Collapse and powerful Sage-enhanced attacks 347 386 398.
- Works alongside Hashirama Cells and the Zero-Tails to repeatedly rebuild his damaged flesh 398.
- Limit: The system does not provide unlimited endurance; wounds eventually stop closing as his remaining time runs out 398.
Dōjutsu and Susanoo
Madara manifests a deep-blue Susanoo, including its armored Crow Tengu form, and possesses a Rinnegan upon his return 306 334.
- Wields the Totsuka Blade through Susanoo to immobilize and seal Black Zetsu 305 310.
- Attempts to seal Kuro’s adapting blade wheel with the same weapon 350.
- Uses the Preta Path’s absorption, but finds that it cannot absorb Sasuke’s Enma-enhanced flames 355.
- Limit: Inari God drains his manifested Susanoo and seizes the Totsuka Blade before he can dismiss them 350.
Yin–Yang Release Armor
His black armor incorporates Black Zetsu’s power and can change shape rather than functioning as ordinary equipment 335.
- Erases Flying Thunder God marks as they are placed 335.
- Reforms from a flowing black substance after being broken apart 347.
- Produces a Long Halberd and a black warhorse 335.
- Gives the halberd sufficient power to contend with Truth-Seeking Orbs 398.
Halberd Combat and Fire Release
Madara combines sweeping weapon attacks, thrusts, throws, and Fire Release with the explosive strength of the Eight Gates 347 350.
- Fire Release: Formation Breakthrough: A flame-wreathed halberd thrust directed at Hashirama and Kuro 347.
- Destroys Hashirama’s Wood Dragon with a single contact from the halberd’s tip 348.
- Cuts through successive arms of Sage Art: Thousand Hands while advancing on horseback 350.
- Hurls the halberd through Kuro’s Susanoo, forcing Kuro to stop it with Magatsuhi God immediately before impact 350.
Infiltration and Tactical Analysis
Madara conducts long-term surveillance through Shadow Clones and maintains numerous convincing identities using the Transformation Technique 308 309 342.
- Secretly supervises Kuro through multiple jonin disguises 342.
- Investigates sites associated with the Sage of Six Paths and reconstructs deliberately erased history 309.
- Identifies the gaze-tracking requirement of Magatsuhi God and attempts to defeat it with superior speed 347.
- Chooses taijutsu as his preferred counter to Inari God’s chakra and ocular-power absorption 335.
