Background
Vegeta was the five-year-old prince of Planet Vegeta and possessed a combat power of 15,000. Lu Fan served as his sparring partner and attendant, though their actual dynamic quickly became inverted: Lu Fan repeatedly overpowered, restrained, and knocked out the prince whenever Vegeta became unmanageable 1 2 3.
Lu Fan persuaded Vegeta to leave Planet Vegeta by promising a path to Super Saiyan. He taught that a Saiyan needed a peaceful heart to increase S-Cells, a principle Vegeta initially rejected because of his impatience and pride 4 5. On Namek, Vegeta pursued the Dragon Balls to gain the ability to survive in space and learn the Super Saiyan transformation method, but his aggression toward the Namekians repeatedly endangered the mission 14 15.
Vegeta's confidence suffered a major blow when Neil concealed his true strength, casually deflected Galick Gun, and pushed Vegeta's Scouter beyond its limit 18 19. Even after three years on the Gourmet Planet, Vegeta had not become a Super Saiyan; Lu Fan attributed this failure to Vegeta's lack of inner peace 23.
Personality
Vegeta is fiercely proud of his status as the Saiyan prince and openly dismisses low-class warriors, weak opponents, and authority figures he considers unworthy. He initially regards Kakarot as a worthless reject and treats North Kai with enough contempt that their training becomes ineffective 5 82 84.
His pride often becomes recklessness. He threatens Namekians for Dragon Balls, challenges vastly stronger enemies, and refuses rest even when warned that overtraining could leave him unprepared for greater threats 14 18 182. His drive is nevertheless genuine: he wants to surpass Kakarot, avenge Planet Vegeta by defeating Frieza, and eventually become a God of Destruction 142 176.
Repeated defeats gradually force Vegeta to acknowledge his weaknesses. After seeing a future in which he dies to Frieza while Goku becomes a Super Saiyan, he humbles himself enough to ask Lu Fan for instruction. He later makes a conscious effort to cultivate the peaceful mindset he once mocked 137 140.
Abilities & Skills
Saiyan Physiology
Vegeta possesses the standard combat traits of a Saiyan, including flight, rapid combat-power growth after recovery from severe injury, and the ability to transform through his tail and exposure to full-moon electromagnetic waves 112 118 119.
- His combat power rose from 18,000 to 24,000 after recovering with a Senzu Bean 118.
- He can survive and continue fighting through severe injuries, including damage from Son Goku's Kaioken-enhanced attacks and a Spirit Bomb 112 115.
- His tail was cut off during the battle on Earth, preventing normal Great Ape transformation until Marcarita restored it 142 175.
Artificial Full Moon and Great Ape
Vegeta can condense an Artificial Full Moon, allowing a tailed Saiyan to transform without a natural moon.
- A Great Ape transformation increases a Saiyan's combat power tenfold 112.
- Creating the moon consumes a substantial amount of his energy 112.
- Neil destroyed Vegeta's first Artificial Full Moon before he could transform on Namek 19.
- His Super Saiyan Great Ape form provides an estimated five-hundredfold increase, but initially requires an Artificial Full Moon 175 176.
Super Saiyan Transformations
Vegeta pursues Super Saiyan as the means to defeat Frieza and eventually achieves the form on Namek.
- He becomes a Super Saiyan during his fight with Frieza after gaining strength through seven days of training 158 159.
- He later combines Super Saiyan with Great Ape form, turning his fur golden and drastically amplifying his power 175.
- He awakens Super Saiyan 2 during a battle with Broly 201.
- Lu Fan repeatedly stresses that transformation multipliers are only effective when supported by a strong base combat power 176 180.
Ki Techniques
Vegeta is an experienced energy fighter capable of condensing destructive attacks and fighting at high speed.
- Galick Gun — Fires a concentrated energy blast; Neil swatted one aside when Vegeta was badly outclassed 18.
- Final Flash — Combines energy in both hands into a powerful beam attack. Lu Fan deflected Vegeta's full-power blast with one slap 87.
- Energy Blasts — Uses simple ki shots to pressure, taunt, and test opponents in combat 109.
- Flight — Routinely travels through the air and rapidly pursues opponents across battlefields 107 157.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Scouter — Measures combat power and tracks distant energy signatures. Vegeta's Scouter exploded when Neil raised his power beyond 20,000 18.
- Dragon Radar — Received from Lu Fan during their search for the Dragon Balls 10.
- Personal spaceship — Used for travel between worlds; Lu Fan later kicked it away, leaving Vegeta stranded on Earth 117.
Relationships
- Lu Fan — Originally Vegeta's sparring partner and subordinate, but becomes his dominant mentor and would-be sponsor for the God of Destruction position. Lu Fan repeatedly humiliates Vegeta while teaching him about S-Cells, Super Saiyan, base strength, and divine power 4 87 176.
- Son Goku / Kakarot — Vegeta's lifelong rival. He first dismisses Goku as a low-class warrior, defeats him on North Kai's Planet, then suffers repeated defeats as Goku's power rises. Their rivalry becomes a tense cooperation against Frieza 5 84 119 142.
- Frieza — Vegeta's primary enemy and the target of his revenge for Planet Vegeta. Learning Frieza's true combat power shatters Vegeta's confidence but also pushes him to seek greater power 120 142 157.
- Emily — Vegeta saves her from a robber and directly asks her to become his girlfriend; she accepts 138.
- Marcarita — Assists Lu Fan with Vegeta's development, restores his tail, heals him after his Super Saiyan Great Ape defeat, and instructs him on the road toward becoming Universe 11's God of Destruction 175 176 186.
- North Kai — An attempted teacher whom Vegeta disrespects and assaults. Vegeta later regrets failing to learn North Kai's techniques when he sees Goku's Kaioken growth 82 84 132.
- Nappa and Raditz — Fellow Saiyan warriors who follow Vegeta's commands; Vegeta is impatient with both, particularly Nappa's chatter 76.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Escape from Planet Vegeta and Early Training
Vegeta leaves Planet Vegeta with Lu Fan to pursue the Super Saiyan transformation and escape the limits of Saiyan life. Their early travels include Earth, Namek, and the Gourmet Planet, where Lu Fan tries to force Vegeta to develop a peaceful heart 3 5 21.
North Kai's Planet and the Earth Battle
After years of little progress, Lu Fan sends Vegeta to North Kai for training. Vegeta rejects North Kai's authority, misses the chance to learn Kaioken, and is later surpassed by Goku during their battle on Earth 77 84 109 119.
Vegeta uses an Artificial Full Moon to become a Great Ape and briefly overwhelms Goku, but Goku's Kaioken, the Z-Fighters' intervention, and a Spirit Bomb leave him severely injured 112 113 115.
Future Namek Observation
Lu Fan takes Vegeta to a parallel future where he witnesses an alternate version of himself die helplessly against Frieza. He also sees Goku become Super Saiyan, Super Saiyan 2, and Super Saiyan 3, ending his belief that Kakarot could never be his rival 120 127 137.
Namek and Super Saiyan Awakening
After cultivating a more peaceful state of mind on Earth, Vegeta travels to Namek to confront Frieza. Seven days of training raise his strength enough for him to defeat Frieza's first two forms, and he ultimately transforms into a Super Saiyan against Frieza's final form 140 158 159.
God of Destruction Candidate
Lu Fan later brings Vegeta to Universe 11 with the intention of replacing Belmod with him. Under Lu Fan and Marcarita's guidance, Vegeta regains his tail, unlocks Super Saiyan Great Ape, trains under 500 times Earth's gravity, and begins pursuing Ultra Instinct alongside his goal of becoming a God of Destruction 175 180 193.
