History

Founding and early development

Konohagakure was founded when the Senju and Uchiha clans united, ending the Warring States period and establishing the model later adopted by the other great nations. Hashirama Senju and Uchiha Madara were central to its creation, with the village becoming the strongest alliance in the ninja world at the time. 179 183 186

Madara’s departure and subsequent battle against Hashirama at the Valley of the End damaged Konoha’s prestige. Hashirama’s death soon afterward ended its period of unrivaled deterrence and helped trigger the First Great Ninja War. 180

Under the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, Konoha established the Ninja Academy, ANBU, and the village guard force. These institutions became models for other villages. 181

Conflict with the Uchiha Clan

Tobirama assigned the Uchiha Clan to staff the Konoha Military Police Force. While intended to maintain village security, the role alienated the Uchiha from other clans and residents because policing generated resentment. 6

Following the Nine-Tails’ rampage, Konoha suspected the Uchiha because the beast’s eyes displayed Sharingan patterns. The clan was not deployed during the incident, was relocated toward the village outskirts, and later faced pressure to move even farther away. 6

Konoha’s leadership monitored Uchiha members and ultimately moved toward eliminating the clan rather than allowing it to leave peacefully. Hiruzen, Danzo, ANBU, and Root forces surrounded the escaping Uchiha; the clan evaded destruction through Mingyou’s space-time abilities. 6 13 14

Fourth Great Ninja War and fall

The Uchiha defection accelerated the outbreak of a major war against Konoha. The Land of Water deployed more than 8,000 ninja under Mei Terumī, overrunning a border observation camp before advancing toward the village. 54 60

Konoha came under simultaneous pressure from the other great villages. Mingyou infiltrated the village while its forces were divided across multiple fronts, killed Hiruzen Sarutobi and senior advisers Mitokado Homura and Utatane Koharu, and captured Naruto Uzumaki. 63 69 80

Konoha later launched a punitive operation against Kirigakure and the Uchiha, but suffered heavy losses and withdrew. 98 99

After Mingyou’s later campaign against the remaining great nations, Jiraiya and Konoha’s jonin were defeated by Mingyou and Orochimaru’s forces. Jiraiya surrendered the village to prevent further deaths, after which its people were injected with Guren’s poison serum and brought under control. 214

• Konoha maintained border observation camps and reconnaissance personnel to detect incoming enemy forces. 58 60
