Background / History

Obito entered Konoha's Ninja Academy alongside Kakashi, Rin, Guy, and their future classmates. He introduced himself with a loud declaration that he would become Hokage, despite being regarded as a poor student; his Clone Technique produced two unstable, malformed clones. 7 8

Having lost his parents young, Obito received little support within the Uchiha clan and was routinely called the clan's “dead-last” by its elders. He nevertheless remained determined to become Hokage, often competing with Guy over the same ambition. 19 177

Obito lived with his grandmother during childhood. Although their household was poor, he never went hungry, which later contributed to his shock at discovering fatal starvation in the Land of Rice Fields. His grandmother's advice about continuing forward despite tears also helped inspire him to follow Guy into training after their Academy failures. 8 385

After failing the Clone Technique, Obito accepted Guy's invitation to train at the Back Mountain Training Ground. Guy encouraged him to improve other skills rather than resent Kakashi's talent, emphasizing that even a genius worked hard. Obito continued training alongside him, although he struggled with Guy's demanding mountain-running routine. 8 13

He brought Guy to the Uchiha compound and introduced him to his second uncle, Uchiha Tao Ye, enabling Guy to work at the Uchiha Forge. Obito defended Guy when Tao Ye initially dismissed him, and later witnessed Guy earn Tao Ye's respect through his forging work. 19 20

After graduation, Obito and Rin were assigned to Team 7 under Minato Namikaze, joining Kakashi at the Land of Grass front. 38 During the war, he continued training to overcome his reputation as a failure, eventually reaching the point where his combat ability was judged comparable to an ordinary chūnin even before awakening the Sharingan. 172

Following the Three-Tails crisis, Obito returned to Konoha as a half jinchūriki alongside Rin. Though he lost all memories after the Thundercloud Gorge incident, he accepted the account given by Guy and Kakashi and remained focused on protecting Rin. 368 370

During postwar relief efforts in the Land of Rice Fields, Obito's idealistic view of becoming Hokage was shaken by the reality of starvation, corruption, and displaced civilians. He later returned with thirty-one refugees, strengthening his desire to create a world without hunger. 385 392

After Uchiha Fugaku led most of the clan's fighting strength in a defection from Konoha, Obito learned that Fugaku had exploited his concern for Rin and used the pair's Three-Tails seals to create chaos. With the clan's elderly, women, children, and non-Sharingan members abandoned behind, Obito accepted their request to become the new Uchiha clan head and formally expelled Fugaku and the defectors from the clan. 478

Following the defection, Obito and Rin remain emotionally unstable from the attack and its aftermath. Guy entrusts their immediate care to Kakashi while Obito begins shouldering the responsibility of rebuilding the loyal Uchiha. 479

During the following year, Obito receives a replacement Sharingan from a loyal clan member, restoring his binocular vision. He throws himself into missions to financially support the weakened Uchiha clan, whose reputation and weapon business have suffered following Fugaku's betrayal. 573 574 575

Minato later sends Obito to investigate the newly established ninja village in the Land of Rice Fields. There, he discovers that Guy is behind Spirit Mountain's development and agrees to an economic alliance through which Moyochi En will purchase and distribute weapons forged by the Uchiha clan. 573 574 575

By the time Guy and Kakashi discuss their teammates' personal lives at seventeen, Obito remains preoccupied with strengthening the Uchiha clan. Kakashi describes this commitment as increasingly obsessive and relies on Rin's continued presence to help keep watch over him. Although Obito and Rin are getting along well, they have not become a couple. 630

Appearance

Obito initially appears as a young Uchiha boy whose expressive face and loud manner match his impulsive personality. He grows noticeably taller and broader over the course of the war. 7 33

Personality

Obito is noisy, optimistic, and fiercely ambitious. His desire to become Hokage is not merely a boast: he wants to end hunger, prevent further wars, and protect the people important to him. 7 401 He is easily embarrassed, competitive toward Guy and Kakashi, and prone to dramatic outbursts when challenged or humiliated. 172 173

Despite his recklessness, he is deeply compassionate. He worries intensely about Rin, volunteers to care for her when Kakashi is unable to accompany them, and accepts severe personal costs when he believes they will protect her. 357 368 371 His instinct to help others can also make him idealistic; Guy has to caution him against offering Konoha Orphanage's resources to unknown refugees without considering the risks to the children already living there. 388

His warmth also earns him affection outside his clan. During his years at the Land of Grass encampment, he helps move supplies, shares snacks, and readily assists injured shinobi, contrasting with the aloof reputation of other Uchiha. 174

The suffering he witnesses in the Land of Rice Fields forces him to confront the limits of simple idealism. Although initially overwhelmed by the scale of poverty and hunger, he remains committed to helping people while learning that lasting change requires strength, preparation, and responsibility. 385 392

Following the Uchiha defection, Obito demonstrates greater maturity by setting aside his grief and confusion to lead the clan members who were left behind. He rejects collective blame against Konoha, places his faith in Minato's leadership, and accepts responsibility for rebuilding the loyal Uchiha. 478

The burden of clan leadership leaves him more suspicious, sensitive, and obsessive than before. Although he initially tries to solve the clan's financial problems alone through exhausting mission work, he accepts Guy's criticism that true leadership requires organizing the entire clan rather than relying on individual heroism. 573 575

This fixation persists after his visit to Spirit Mountain. Kakashi later reports that strengthening the Uchiha occupies nearly all of Obito's thoughts and admits uncertainty about how to dissuade him from his growing obsession.
