Background
Ebisu began as one of Might Guy’s Ninja Academy classmates. He initially presented himself as a self-appointed supervisor, joining Guy, Kakashi, Obito, Kurenai, and Rin on a nighttime excursion to ensure they did nothing that disgraced the Academy. Guy’s effortless defeat of a ninja bear left Ebisu visibly stunned. 8 14
He was also present when Guy killed an Iwagakure rogue chūnin during an early mission. Although he admired Guy’s feat, recalling the enemy’s crushed body left Ebisu visibly shaken. 30 31
After joining Team 9 with Guy and Shiranui Genma, Ebisu was deployed to the Kikyo Mountain front. The realities of war initially overwhelmed him: he vomited after seeing severely wounded shinobi in the medical tent. He returned the next two days regardless, eventually helping pass bandages without flinching. 40 In his first battle, he held off an Iwagakure ninja through evasive movement and kunai pressure before breaking through with the Great Fireball Technique. 40 He later helped tend Guy during the latter’s recovery from a severe leg injury. 47
Choza taught Guy, Ebisu, and Genma the Akimichi Clan’s basic Expansion Jutsu seals after their time fighting together at Kikyo Mountain. Ebisu struggled to cultivate the Multi-Size Technique because of his weaker physique and chose not to overstrain himself trying to match Guy’s rapid progress. 81 82
Following Team 9’s reassignment to the Land of Waves sector under Hyuga Yuma, Ebisu and Genma continued developing their analytical approach and coordinated combat style. 93 During the Land of Waves campaign, Ebisu and Genma acquired replica Hiramekarei through battle-merit exchange. The pair developed into a coordinated dual-blade unit, capable of combining their weapons’ chakra amplification with large-scale Water Release. 113 116 139 Their participation in the defeat of Hozuki Mangetsu earned them a half-price exchange discount, allowing them to obtain the replicas. 113 Mitokado Homura subsequently gave the pair a research report on effective Hiramekarei use. 115
Watching Guy’s growth and Genma’s progress toward the Flying Thunder God Technique left Ebisu painfully aware of his own low chakra reserves. He chose sealing techniques as his path forward, spending all 450 of his Land of Rice Fields merits on a Fire-Sealing Formula scroll and low-grade blank scrolls. 188 189 He learned the Rope-Binding Seal within two days and accepted responsibility for Team 9’s seals and logistics. 192
Ebisu deliberately provoked Hozuki Kurisu, the genuine Hiramekarei wielder, during Team 9’s confrontation with the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. His taunts drew Kurisu into Guy’s planned ambush, enabling the team to seize the genuine twin blades. 199 201 Guy later entrusted Ebisu with Nuibari and one genuine Hiramekarei. 214 When the team considered surrendering a captured legendary blade to Konoha, Ebisu volunteered Nuibari because he believed he only needed its chakra-metal wire; Guy rejected the proposal, recognizing Nuibari’s value to Ebisu’s sealing-based combat. 221
Following further training and missions, Ebisu formed a summoning contract with the Bat Queen, gaining an aerial scouting and support partner. 252 263 During the Land of the Sea mission, he used his sealing expertise to manage the Sea Monk’s life core and prepare additional seawater in advanced sealing scrolls. 269 He also participated in Team 9’s Kannabi Bridge operations, where the team used coordinated Fire Release and Flying Thunder God tactics to eliminate enemy chūnin. 332
In the later postwar period, he became a teacher at the Ninja Academy, where his broad technical knowledge and extensive notebook made him well suited to instruction. 434 While accompanying the Fire Daimyo’s procession disguised as a guard alongside Genma, Ebisu was injured in a targeted explosion. 429 433 After recovering enough to travel, he and Genma returned safely to Konoha, where they learned from Guy’s letter that the Fire Temple attack had likely been intended for them. 437 438
Appearance
Ebisu is most consistently identified by his sunglasses, which he frequently adjusts when surprised, thinking, or trying to appear composed.
- Wore a forehead protector while serving with Team 9. 40
- Replaced his original sunglasses with a thicker-lensed pair during his Academy years. 33
- His sunglasses are repeatedly knocked crooked or nearly fall off when Guy’s feats surprise him. 14 149
- His sunglasses slipped crooked during his first battle and again when seasickness incapacitated him aboard the voyage to the Land of the Sea. 40 260
Personality
Ebisu is boastful, theatrical, and fond of presenting himself as more imposing than he feels. In battle, he loudly declares that “This Great One” can succeed, and he was willing to taunt an elite Kirigakure swordsman specifically to manipulate the enemy’s attention. 40 199
Behind that bravado, he is deeply conscious of his limitations. Guy’s continued growth and Genma’s Flying Thunder God training made Ebisu feel that he was holding the team back; rather than give in to that insecurity, he found a role suited to his talents through seals, scrolls, and preparation. 188 189
He is loyal and dependable toward his teammates. He tended to Guy while Guy recovered from severe injuries, trusted Guy’s orders without hesitation during dangerous missions, and used the Rope-Binding Seal to create the opening Guy needed against Jinpachi Munashi. 47 194 205 Ebisu can also become intensely angry at cruelty, reacting with fury after witnessing Amachi’s experiments on living people. 268
Ebisu is willing to part with valuable resources when he believes doing so would benefit Team 9. He offered to surrender Nuibari to Konoha rather than risk losing the team’s other weapons, despite his attachment to the legendary blade. 221
Abilities & Skills
Sealing Techniques
Ebisu specializes in seals and scroll-based battlefield support, using preparation to compensate for his limited chakra reserves.
- Exchanged his merits for the Fire-Sealing Formula and blank sealing scrolls, establishing his personal arsenal of stored ninjutsu. 189
- Low-grade blank scrolls can hold effects only up to C-rank ninjutsu. 189
- Learned the Rope-Binding Seal in two days and used it to restrain Jinpachi Munashi during Guy’s attack. 192 205
- Mastered Fire-Sealing and Water-Sealing Formula techniques through Chen’s special training. 236
- Can create Water-Sealing Formula scrolls; one premium scroll showed Water Release chakra fluctuations before any water was placed inside it. 240
- Used advanced sealing scrolls to store seawater and control the captured Sea Monk’s life core following the Land of the Sea operation. 269
- Was assigned to charge Guy’s Lion’s Sealing Roar as part of his support role. 236
Twin Blades: Hiramekarei
Ebisu initially fought with an imitation Hiramekarei before gaining one of the genuine legendary twin blades.
- Replica Hiramekarei amplifies ninjutsu, absorbs and stores a portion of an opponent’s chakra, and can release it as a chakra shockwave. 116
- The replica’s storage capacity and shockwave power are limited, and it requires recharging after release. 116
- Coordinates closely with Genma, combining their blades for offense, defense, and amplified Water Release techniques. 132 139
- Helped seize the genuine Hiramekarei from Hozuki Kurisu after deliberately drawing him into Guy’s attack plan. 199 201
- Received a research report on Hiramekarei’s practical use from Mitokado Homura alongside Genma. 115
Fire Release
Ebisu is proficient in Fire Release and can apply it under direct combat pressure.
- Used the Great Fireball Technique to overwhelm an Iwagakure opponent during Team 9’s first battle. 40
- Provided decisive Fire Release support against an Iwagakure chūnin while Guy fought the other enemy. 44
- Contributed Fire Release to Team 9’s combined assault on Iwagakure chūnin during the Kannabi Bridge campaign. 332
Super Water Dragon Barrage Technique
During the battle against Roshi, Ebisu and Genma used their replica Hiramekarei to guide water released from Guy’s sealing scroll into three enormous water dragons.
- Ebisu named the combined attack the Forbidden Technique: Super Water Dragon Barrage Technique. 139
- The technique depended on the pair’s joint control, Hiramekarei’s chakra amplification, and Guy’s prepared Water Release. 139
- The exertion left Ebisu and Genma weakened from excessive chakra consumption. 146
Bat Queen Summoning
Ebisu holds a contract with the Bat Queen, a giant bat suited to aerial reconnaissance and support.
- The Bat Queen can carry Ebisu in flight and directs a bat swarm through ultrasonic communication. 252
- Her ultrasonic detection located an abnormal presence beneath the western section of Demon Realm Island. 263
- She is affectionate toward Ebisu and responds immediately when he summons her. 263
- Ebisu steadied the Bat Queen when Guy’s Sixth Gate Morning Peacock frightened her during the Sea Monk battle. 266
- Each combat summoning requires approximately 1,000 jin of food, with spiders and frogs among the Bat Queen’s preferred offerings. 252
Analysis and Team Coordination
Ebisu’s greatest non-combat strength is his breadth of technical knowledge and ability to support a coordinated team.
- Maintains a notebook containing notes on sealing, summoning, taijutsu, ninja tools, clan techniques, and battlefield observations. 192 434
- His notebook also contains a record of Akatsuki’s original peace-oriented philosophy and organizational goals. 405
- Recognizes ninja-blade properties and evaluates their tactical value, including Hiramekarei’s chakra-storage function. 95 116
- Works in near-silent coordination with Guy and Genma during reconnaissance, battle, and tactical retreats. 137 194
- Uses sealing-based control and Genma’s Flying Thunder God interceptions as part of Team 9’s established combat coordination. 267
