Background

Ebisu began as one of Might Guy’s Ninja Academy classmates. He initially presented himself as a self-appointed supervisor, joining Guy, Kakashi, Obito, Kurenai, and Rin on a nighttime excursion to ensure they did nothing that disgraced the Academy. Guy’s effortless defeat of a ninja bear left Ebisu visibly stunned. 8 14

He was also present when Guy killed an Iwagakure rogue chūnin during an early mission. Although he admired Guy’s feat, recalling the enemy’s crushed body left Ebisu visibly shaken. 30 31

After joining Team 9 with Guy and Shiranui Genma, Ebisu was deployed to the Kikyo Mountain front. The realities of war initially overwhelmed him: he vomited after seeing severely wounded shinobi in the medical tent. He returned the next two days regardless, eventually helping pass bandages without flinching. 40 In his first battle, he held off an Iwagakure ninja through evasive movement and kunai pressure before breaking through with the Great Fireball Technique. 40 He later helped tend Guy during the latter’s recovery from a severe leg injury. 47

Choza taught Guy, Ebisu, and Genma the Akimichi Clan’s basic Expansion Jutsu seals after their time fighting together at Kikyo Mountain. Following Team 9’s reassignment to the Land of Waves sector under Hyuga Yuma, Ebisu and Genma continued developing their analytical approach and coordinated combat style. 93 During the Land of Waves campaign, Ebisu and Genma acquired replica Hiramekarei through battle-merit exchange. Ebisu deliberately provoked Hozuki Kurisu, the genuine Hiramekarei wielder, during Team 9’s confrontation with the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. His taunts drew Kurisu into Guy’s planned ambush, enabling the team to seize the genuine twin blades. 199 201 Guy later entrusted Ebisu with Nuibari and one genuine Hiramekarei. 214 When the team considered surrendering a captured legendary blade to Konoha, Ebisu volunteered Nuibari because he believed he only needed its chakra-metal wire; Guy rejected the proposal, recognizing Nuibari’s value to Ebisu’s sealing-based combat. 221

Personality

Ebisu is boastful, theatrical, and fond of presenting himself as more imposing than he feels. In battle, he loudly declares that “This Great One” can succeed, and he was willing to taunt an elite Kirigakure swordsman specifically to manipulate the enemy’s attention. 40 199

Behind that bravado, he is deeply conscious of his limitations. Guy’s continued growth and Genma’s Flying Thunder God training made Ebisu feel that he was holding the team back; rather than give in to that insecurity, he found a role suited to his talents through seals, scrolls, and preparation. 188 189

He is loyal and dependable toward his teammates. He tended to Guy while Guy recovered from severe injuries, trusted Guy’s orders without hesitation during dangerous missions, and used the Rope-Binding Seal to create the opening Guy needed against Jinpachi Munashi. 47 194 205 Ebisu can also become intensely angry at cruelty, reacting with fury after witnessing Amachi’s experiments on living people. 268

Ebisu is willing to part with valuable resources when he believes doing so would benefit Team 9. He offered to surrender Nuibari to Konoha rather than risk losing the team’s other weapons, despite his attachment to the legendary blade. 221
