Background

Ebisu began as one of Might Guy’s Ninja Academy classmates. At age six, he introduced himself to Ikkaku Umino’s class with the confident promise that he would become an excellent elite ninja, and he attempted to provoke Kakashi shortly afterward. 7 He initially presented himself as a self-appointed supervisor, joining Guy, Kakashi, Obito, Kurenai, and Rin on a nighttime excursion to ensure they did nothing that disgraced the Academy. Guy’s effortless defeat of a ninja bear left Ebisu visibly stunned. 8 14

During the class’s first live-combat mission against bandits, Ebisu worked with Guy and Genma as Team 6. He became overconfident after the group subdued several ordinary bandits, only for Guy to sharply warn him against becoming cocky. 28 31 Team 6 received the mission’s highest reward after handling the most bandits and being the first team to reinforce Team 7 when it was endangered. 31 When their classmates later chose to enter the Forest of Death to search for those left behind, Ebisu joined them while insisting that he was merely stretching his legs. 37

He was also present when Guy killed an Iwagakure rogue chūnin during an early mission. Although he admired Guy’s feat, recalling the enemy’s crushed body left Ebisu visibly shaken. 30 31

After joining Team 9 with Guy and Shiranui Genma, Ebisu was deployed to the Kikyo Mountain front. The realities of war initially overwhelmed him: he vomited after seeing severely wounded shinobi in the medical tent. He returned the next two days regardless, eventually helping pass bandages without flinching. 40 In his first battle, he held off an Iwagakure ninja through evasive movement and kunai pressure before breaking through with the Great Fireball Technique. 40 He later helped tend Guy during the latter’s recovery from a severe leg injury. 47

During Guy’s watch beyond Konoha’s defensive line, Ebisu carried his written battlefield report and four slain Iwagakure scouts back to camp. Although initially doubtful that Sunagakure would launch a surprise attack, he came to trust Guy’s assessment. His arrival dragging the fresh corpses visibly alarmed the camp’s sentries, reinforcing Guy’s warning that fighting was continuing outside their defenses. 60 61

During the Kikyo Mountain campaign, Ebisu grew close to Akimichi Choza, who had commanded Team 9 through repeated life-or-death situations. He was angered by Sarutobi Sosuke’s false claims of battlefield heroism after the campaign, particularly because the surviving defenders knew the truth. 81 89

Choza taught Guy, Ebisu, and Genma the Akimichi Clan’s basic Expansion Jutsu seals after their time fighting together at Kikyo Mountain. Ebisu struggled to cultivate the Multi-Size Technique because of his weaker physique and chose not to overstrain himself trying to match Guy’s rapid progress. 81 82

Following Team 9’s reassignment to the Land of Waves sector under Hyuga Yuma, Ebisu and Genma continued developing their analytical approach and coordinated combat style. 93 During the Land of Waves campaign, Ebisu and Genma acquired replica Hiramekarei through battle-merit exchange. The pair developed into a coordinated dual-blade unit, capable of combining their weapons’ chakra amplification with large-scale Water Release. 113 116 139 Their participation in the defeat of Hozuki Mangetsu earned them a half-price exchange discount, allowing them to obtain the replicas. 113 Mitokado Homura subsequently gave the pair a research report on effective Hiramekarei use. 115

Ebisu also observed Yuma’s theoretical instruction on adapting Rotation’s principles to Guy’s weapons. Yuma warned Ebisu and Genma against recklessly imitating the technique because their physical foundations and control of their own chakra flow were insufficient for its demands. Before their departure, Yuma entrusted Ebisu with supplies containing handwritten notes on chakra control and Rotation principles. 104 117

During the Land of Rice Fields campaign, Ebisu, Guy, and Genma were assigned to Outpost Eight under Uchiha Hisui. Deputy commander Inoichi Yamanaka recognized the trio through Choza’s praise and treated them as valued junior shinobi. 122 129 Ebisu and Genma later used their replica Hiramekarei alongside Guy’s prepared Water Release to create the Super Water Dragon Barrage Technique against Roshi. 139

While training with Minato Namikaze, Ebisu asked to learn the Flying Thunder God Technique. Minato offered to teach its basics if he could reproduce its formula on chakra paper without damaging it, but Ebisu ruined his paper within seconds. Genma’s much stronger performance led Minato to take him on for further instruction. 179

Watching Guy’s growth and Genma’s progress toward the Flying Thunder God Technique left Ebisu painfully aware of his own low chakra reserves. He chose sealing techniques as his path forward, spending all 450 of his Land of Rice Fields merits on a Fire-Sealing Formula scroll and low-grade blank scrolls. 188 189 He learned the Rope-Binding Seal within two days and accepted responsibility for Team 9’s seals and logistics. 192

Ebisu deliberately provoked Hozuki Kurisu, the genuine Hiramekarei wielder, during Team 9’s confrontation with the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. His taunts drew Kurisu into Guy’s planned ambush, enabling the team to seize the genuine twin blades. 199 201 Guy later entrusted Ebisu with Nuibari and one genuine Hiramekarei. 214 When the team considered surrendering a captured legendary blade to Konoha, Ebisu volunteered Nuibari because he believed he only needed its chakra-metal wire; Guy rejected the proposal, recognizing Nuibari’s value to Ebisu’s sealing-based combat. 221

Fugaku Uchiha subsequently presented Ebisu and Genma with their chūnin appointments. Ebisu, who had only recently turned ten, was overwhelmed with pride at receiving the promotion earlier than he had expected. The team’s assessment was that the pair could already fight an elite chūnin together before acquiring the legendary blades and could briefly hold their own against a jōnin such as Jinpachi Munashi afterward. 222

Chen included Ebisu and Genma in his training program alongside Guy. The pair endured a month of harsh wilderness survival training, and Ebisu spent his limited free time studying Fire-Sealing and Water-Sealing Formula techniques. 225 229 236

While seeking summoning partners, Ebisu and Genma helped subdue a supergiant crab through coordinated scroll, wire, sealing, and Lightning Release tactics. Although they secured a contract, they discovered that even their combined chakra reserves were insufficient to summon it. Guy suggested using chakra stored in the genuine Hiramekarei as an outside power source. 243 245 247 248

Following further training and missions, Ebisu formed a summoning contract with the Bat Queen, gaining an aerial scouting and support partner. 252 263 He and Genma also refined their cooperative Lightning Release into the Lightning Release: High-Voltage Power Line Technique, combining tempered steel wire, sealing formulas, and Lightning Release to incapacitate a supergiant crab. 245 During the Land of the Sea mission, he used his sealing expertise to manage the Sea Monk’s life core and prepare additional seawater in advanced sealing scrolls. 269 He also participated in Team 9’s Kannabi Bridge operations, where the team used coordinated Fire Release and Flying Thunder God tactics to eliminate enemy chūnin. 332 Afterward, he used Nuibari and the Rope-Binding Seal to string captured Iwagakure shinobi together for transport. 334

During Team 9’s temporary stay in Konoha, Ebisu and Genma were assigned to guard the village gate. The relatively quiet posting gave Ebisu time to further practice his sealing techniques. 284 290 The assignment lasted three months and paid twenty battle merits per month. Their duties included checking the identities of returning wounded shinobi and introducing Academy students Izumo Kamizuki and Kotetsu Hagane to gate procedures. 284 290 He and Genma also regularly visited Anko while she was hospitalized. 299

Before the later Kannabi Bridge operations, Guy prepared to teach Ebisu and Genma the Marrow Cleansing Classic. Ebisu initially hesitated to accept what he recognized as a precious cultivation method, but Guy dismissed his objection and continued writing it out for them. 327 When Guy later left the bridgehead to support Kakashi, Ebisu and Genma wanted to assist the wider battle despite orders to remain behind. They joined Aoba, Raidō, and Iwashi in advancing on the Iwagakure jōnin Mahiru after he climbed onto their side of the collapsed bridge. 337

At the postwar class reunion, Ebisu expressed his wish to become a Ninja Academy teacher. 401 Before leaving Konoha for the Fire Temple, Guy encouraged him to pursue that goal without neglecting his sealing techniques and recommended asking Kushina Uzumaki for guidance. Ebisu was moved to tears by Guy’s concern for his future. 420

In the later postwar period, he became a teacher at the Ninja Academy, where his broad technical knowledge and extensive notebook made him well suited to instruction. 434 He also sought sealing advice from Kushina and encountered Rin studying under her. 434 He later taught Uchiha Itachi, whose interest in Ebisu’s lessons was noted by both Itachi and Fugaku Uchiha. 445 While accompanying the Fire Daimyo’s procession as a guard alongside Genma, Ebisu was injured in a targeted explosion. Following the Nine-Tails attack on Konoha, Ebisu was among Guy’s generation of peers who showed genuine concern for Guy’s safety and condition. 475

In a later report on developments in Konoha, Shibi included information concerning Ebisu’s appointment as a “Special Teacher.” The details behind that appointment were not explained in the passage. 612 Ebisu subsequently reunited with Guy and Genma at a village tea shop. Startled to see Guy openly walking through Konoha with only a partial mask, he lowered his voice and questioned whether Guy had lost his mind by appearing in public. 645

Ebisu is most consistently identified by his sunglasses, which he frequently adjusts when surprised, thinking, or trying to appear composed.

Personality

Ebisu is boastful, theatrical, and fond of presenting himself as more imposing than he feels. He proclaimed his future ambition to become an elite ninja at age six, repeatedly refers to himself as “This Great One,” and was willing to taunt an elite Kirigakure swordsman specifically to manipulate the enemy’s attention. 7 40 199

His confidence can become recklessness or bravado. During the bandit-suppression mission, he prematurely dismissed the danger of the operation after facing only ordinary bandits, prompting Guy to warn him not to get cocky. 28 Nevertheless, Ebisu is able to confront his fear and adapt; after vomiting at the sight of severely wounded shinobi, he returned to the medical tent until he could assist without flinching. 40

Behind that bravado, he is deeply conscious of his limitations. Guy’s continued growth and Genma’s Flying Thunder God training made Ebisu feel that he was holding the team back; rather than give in to that insecurity, he found a role suited to his talents through seals, scrolls, and preparation. 188 189

He is loyal and dependable toward his teammates. He tended to Guy while Guy recovered from severe injuries, trusted Guy’s orders without hesitation during dangerous missions, and used the Rope-Binding Seal to create the opening Guy needed against Jinpachi Munashi. 47 194 205 Ebisu can also become intensely angry at cruelty, reacting with fury after witnessing Amachi’s experiments on living people. 268

Ebisu is willing to part with valuable resources when he believes doing so would benefit Team 9. He offered to surrender Nuibari to Konoha rather than risk losing the team’s other weapons, despite his attachment to the legendary blade. 221

He is openly emotional when his friends support him. Guy’s encouragement of his sealing ambitions, gift of Nuibari, and advice before leaving for the Fire Temple each moved him close to or fully into tears. 189 214 420 He also enjoys gossip and teasing, particularly about Guy’s feelings for Kurenai and Genma’s familiarity with Shizune. 122 131 274

His enthusiasm does not entirely override his judgment. He accepted Yuma’s warning against recklessly imitating Rotation while still valuing the chance to broaden his knowledge, and later withdrew with Genma when Guy and the Sannin’s plans exceeded their ability to participate. 104 406 His alarm at Guy’s public appearance in Konoha likewise reflects concern for his friend’s safety. 645
