Appearance
Genma is usually seen with a toothpick or senbon in his mouth, projecting an outwardly relaxed demeanor even in dangerous situations. He commonly keeps his hands in his pockets, though his stance remains stable and ready for combat. 7 27
- Habitually chews a toothpick or spins a senbon between his teeth. 7 40
- Carries shuriken, kunai, senbon, and Flying Thunder God-marked talismans. 40 243
- Uses paired Hiramekarei blades alongside Ebisu. 149 201
Personality
Genma is calm, observant, and unusually composed in combat for his age. During Team 9's first battle, he controls his opponent with shuriken, exploits an opening with a kunai strike, and deliberately maintains distance rather than rushing after a wounded enemy. 40
He is fiercely motivated by the gap between himself and Guy. Minato's offer to teach him the Flying Thunder God becomes, in Genma's mind, a rare chance to catch up to his overwhelmingly strong teammate. 179 Though he usually affects indifference, he privately enjoys recognition for his space-time talent and eagerly shares the technique's basics when others ask. 269 270
Genma is protective of his companions. He warns Ebisu during their fight with the Seven Ninja Swordsmen and refuses to harm Shizune even as part of Guy's planned deception. 204 310 During the Fire Daimyo convoy attack, he forgoes an opportunity to teleport away, summoning Iron Arm to shield Ebisu instead and suffering serious abdominal injuries from the blast. 430
Although generally self-controlled, Genma can be impulsive when emotionally provoked. After discovering that he had been tricked during Guy and Shizune's plan, his anger causes him to unintentionally activate the Eight Inner Gates. 315
Abilities & Skills
Flying Thunder God Technique
Minato identifies Genma as naturally suited to space-time ninjutsu because of his fine chakra control and sensitivity to formula structures. 179
- Marks targets or terrain with formula talismans attached to senbon. 243 251
- Teleports directly to marked senbon in close-quarters combat. 243 251
- Marks allies, including Ebisu, and can teleport both himself and a marked companion away from immediate danger. 243
- Can flash three to five times consecutively in battle. 333
- Later practices the technique with Namiashi Raidō and Iwaashi Tatami. 329
- His aptitude is described as rare enough to be considered one-in-a-thousand. 270
- Eventually masters the technique and serves in Minato's Flying Thunder God Guard Team with Raidō and Tatami. 434
Eight Inner Gates
Genma has displayed the ability to activate the Eight Inner Gates, though his activation is involuntary and triggered by extreme anger rather than shown as a deliberate combat technique. 315
Projectile and Senbon Combat
Genma's early fighting style centers on measured ranged pressure and precise attacks.
- Uses shuriken to restrict movement, seal escape routes, and wear down opponents. 40
- Combines shuriken pressure with kunai attacks rather than overcommitting. 40
- Uses senbon for lethal throat strikes after teleporting behind opponents. 333
- Integrates senbon with Flying Thunder God markers for mobility and ambushes. 243 251
Hiramekarei Dual-Blade Style
Genma uses imitation dual-bladed Hiramekarei with Ebisu before the pair acquire genuine Hiramekarei blades. 113 149 201 214
- Fights back-to-back with Ebisu, combining offense and defense through coordinated blade work. 132 137
- Helps condense a massive Water Release into water dragons with the replica blades. 139
- Uses the genuine twin blades to confront Jinpachi Munashi during the Seven Ninja Swordsmen battle. 201
- Receives one of the genuine Hiramekarei blades when Guy distributes the weapons seized from the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. 214
- The weapons can absorb, store, and release chakra, allowing their stored chakra to support techniques beyond the users' own reserves. 248
Summoning: Iron Arm
Genma can summon Iron Arm, a powerful panda-like summon. 333 433
- Iron Arm withstands Taiseki's Earth Release: Twin Rock Spear Assassination Technique. 333
- Protects Namiashi Raidō and Iwaashi Tatami from the attack. 333
- Its first appearance in battle shifts the fight's momentum and allows the Konoha team to survive Taiseki's counterattack. 333
- During the Fire Daimyo convoy attack, Genma summons Iron Arm to shield Ebisu from the explosion; the panda is severely injured while protecting him. 430
Restraint and Team Coordination
Genma excels at setting up openings for allies instead of relying only on individual attacks.
- Uses tempered steel wire to bind a giant bat leader after teleporting beside it. 251
- Coordinates the wire restraint with Ebisu's chakra-enhanced Rope-Binding Seal. 251
- Works seamlessly with Guy and Ebisu in triangular and back-to-back defensive formations. 137 155
Equipment
- Senbon — His signature projectile weapon and a medium for Flying Thunder God formula talismans. 243 333
- Shuriken and kunai — Used for battlefield control and opportunistic close-range strikes. 40
- Twin Swords: Hiramekarei — First uses imitation blades, then obtains a genuine paired set with Ebisu. 149 201 214
- Flying Thunder God marker talismans — Attached to senbon to establish teleportation destinations. 243 251
- Tempered steel wire — Used to restrain targets after a teleport-assisted ambush. 251
- Sobering Stone — Kept beneath his tongue to maintain mental clarity during the giant-bat operation. 251
Relationships
- Might Guy — Teammate, longtime comrade, and later captain of Team 9. Genma fights alongside him from Kikyo Mountain onward and seeks Flying Thunder God training partly to close the gap between them. 40 179 262
- Ebisu — Team 9 partner and frequent dual-blade combat partner. The two coordinate closely with Hiramekarei, sealing techniques, and battlefield formations. Genma later risks his life to protect Ebisu during the Fire Daimyo convoy attack. 132 139 251 430
- Minato Namikaze — Mentor who recognizes Genma's spatial-ninjutsu aptitude and begins teaching him the Flying Thunder God Technique. 179 186
- Namiashi Raidō and Iwaashi Tatami — Fellow space-time ninjutsu users. They train alongside Genma and later form the Fourth Hokage's Flying Thunder God Guard Team. 270 329 434
- Shizune — Genma harbors an unrequited crush on her and becomes distressed when he believes she may be interested in Guy. He is unwilling to participate in Guy's plan to injure her, and becomes deeply distraught when he believes her to be in danger. 275 310 312
Story Role & Major Arcs
Team 9 and the Kikyo Mountain Campaign
Genma joins Guy and Ebisu as a member of Team 9 under Akimichi Choza. Their first live battle is an escort mission at Kikyo Mountain, where Genma demonstrates disciplined shuriken control and tactical restraint against an Iwagakure ninja. 40
During the wider campaign, he repeatedly survives through Team 9's coordination. Guy rescues him from a three-man encirclement during Konoha's assault on Iwagakure, while Genma later fights alongside Guy and Ebisu through the retreat battle. 52
Land of Rice Fields and Outpost Eight
Genma and Ebisu develop into a capable paired unit using imitation Hiramekarei. Their coordinated attacks are strong enough that Asuma doubts he could defeat them together. 132
Roshi targets Guy, Ebisu, and Genma to avenge Iwami Shigezo. The trio joins the defense of Outpost Eight, combines their abilities against Roshi, and conserves their remaining strength after the battle. 136 139 142
Flying Thunder God Training
After seeing Genma nearly recreate a Flying Thunder God formula, Minato personally offers him instruction. Genma accepts without hesitation and begins training during evenings when missions allow. 179
His learning progresses from formula work to marked-senbon teleportation, then to repeated flashes in combat. His technique becomes sufficiently developed for him to teach its entry-level aptitude test to other shinobi. 243 267 270 333
Seven Ninja Swordsmen Battle
When Pakura is pursued by the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, Genma and Ebisu draw Jinpachi Munashi away from Guy while wielding genuine Hiramekarei blades seized during the confrontation. 199 201
Following the battle, Genma plainly identifies the defeated Swordsmen and the captured Kushimaru Kuriarare to Chen's reinforcements, helping establish the scale of Team 9's achievement. 215
Later Service
Genma joins Guy, Ebisu, Yamashiro Aoba, Raidō, and Tatami for reconnaissance around Kannabi Bridge, where he trains the Flying Thunder God with Raidō and Tatami between patrols. 329
He uses repeated Flying Thunder God flashes in the ensuing battle against Iwagakure and summons Iron Arm to protect Raidō and Tatami. 333 He later masters the technique and becomes part of the Fourth Hokage's Flying Thunder God Guard Team. 434
Fire Temple Escort and Daimyo Attack
Minato sends Genma and Ebisu to the Fire Temple to consult Guy regarding the proposed succession of the temple's abbacy. The two subsequently travel in the Fire Daimyo's procession while disguised as Konoha guards. 428 429
A second explosion specifically targets them during the procession. Genma summons Iron Arm to shield Ebisu rather than escaping alone with the Flying Thunder God, but is struck by a rock shard in the abdomen and left seriously injured. Guy stabilizes him with the Mystical Palm Technique and summons Katsuyu for treatment, while Iron Arm also requires urgent care for severe injuries. 430
While recovering at the Fire Temple, Genma tells Guy that he has joined Minato's guard unit alongside Raidō and Tatami as a mastered Flying Thunder God user. 434
