Personality

He is fiercely motivated by the gap between himself and Guy. Minato's offer to teach him the Flying Thunder God becomes, in Genma's mind, a rare chance to catch up to his overwhelmingly strong teammate. 179 Though he usually affects indifference, he privately enjoys recognition for his space-time talent and eagerly shares the technique's basics when others ask. 269 270 After Team 9's achievements against the Seven Ninja Swordsmen become widely known in Konoha, he openly enjoys the recognition he receives alongside Guy and Ebisu. 274

Genma is protective of his companions. Although generally self-controlled, Genma can be impulsive when emotionally provoked. After discovering that he had been tricked during Guy and Shizune's plan, his anger causes him to unintentionally activate the Eight Inner Gates. 315

During the wider campaign, he repeatedly survives through Team 9's coordination. Guy rescues him from a three-man encirclement during Konoha's assault on Iwagakure, while Genma later fights alongside Guy and Ebisu through the retreat battle. 52

Genma also uses senbon to prevent enemy genin from retreating into safety, directing them into Guy's attacks. During the confrontation with Pakura, he coordinates distracting projectile attacks with Ebisu while Guy helps cover the Konoha fighters. 43 75

When Guy is ordered to guard a ridge alone, he refuses to take Genma and Ebisu with him and departs with supplies provided by his teammates. At the campaign's rotation, Genma returns to Konoha with Guy and Ebisu while Choza remains to command the defense. Land of Waves and Hozuki Mangetsu

During the fighting in the Land of Waves, Genma and Ebisu confront Hozuki Mangetsu while Guy takes on Mei Terumi. Genma directs senbon toward Mangetsu's joints and hands, coordinating with Ebisu's fireballs to keep the swordsman from assisting the other Kirigakure fighters. 100

When Mangetsu is later paralyzed by lightning, Genma precisely strikes his shoulder, arm, and thigh with senbon, helping bring him down. Before the team escorts their captive toward the Land of Rice Fields, Hyuga Yuma supplies Genma with a pouch of finely made senbon. 110 117

Land of Rice Fields and Outpost Eight

Genma and Ebisu develop into a capable paired unit using imitation Hiramekarei. Their coordinated attacks are strong enough that Asuma doubts he could defeat them together. 132

Roshi targets Guy, Ebisu, and Genma to avenge Iwami Shigezo. The trio joins the defense of Outpost Eight, combines their abilities against Roshi, and conserves their remaining strength after the battle. 136 139 142

Before that confrontation, the trio serves under Shisui's temporary leadership on patrols around the Uchiha-staffed outpost. Genma and Ebisu use coordinated blade work to incapacitate an Iwagakure scout, allowing the group to return with prisoners for interrogation. 123 126

During Roshi's attack, Guy releases a vast quantity of stored seawater over the lava-covered battlefield. Genma and Ebisu shape it into three enormous water dragons with their imitation Hiramekarei blades. 139

Afterward, Uchiha Hisui arranges for the trio to transfer to Inoichi Yamanaka's Intelligence Division to reduce their exposure to Iwagakure retaliation. They are assigned to Inuzuka Tsume and Kuromaru. 149

Flying Thunder God Training

After seeing Genma nearly recreate a Flying Thunder God formula, Minato personally offers him instruction. Genma accepts without hesitation and begins training during evenings when missions allow. 179

During a later assignment guarding Konoha's main gate with Ebisu, Genma regards the post as an opportunity to continue practicing the Flying Thunder God Technique during relatively light duty. 290

Seven Ninja Swordsmen Battle

When Pakura is pursued by the Seven Ninja Swordsmen, Genma and Ebisu draw Jinpachi Munashi away from Guy while wielding genuine Hiramekarei blades seized during the confrontation. 199 201

Before the fighting begins, Guy initially intends to carry his teammates away rather than risk their lives. Genma asks whether he believes victory is possible; after Guy estimates a sixty percent chance, Genma and Ebisu remove his hands from their shoulders and choose to stand with him. 198

Following the battle, Genma plainly identifies the defeated Swordsmen and the captured Kushimaru Kuriarare to Chen's reinforcements, helping establish the scale of Team 9's achievement. 215

Guy distributes one genuine Hiramekarei blade to each of his teammates. The trio later agrees to retain Hiramekarei, Nuibari, and Kubikiribōchō while surrendering Kabutowari and Kiba's remains to Konoha. Fugaku subsequently promotes Genma and Ebisu to chunin in recognition of their wartime performance. 214 221 222

Main Gate Duty and Tsunade's Hemophobia

While Guy spends three months assisting at Konoha Medical Hospital, Genma and Ebisu are assigned to the village's main gate for the same period, receiving twenty battle merits per month. The relatively safe assignment leaves them time for their respective training. They also guide Izumo and Kotetsu through gate procedures before the younger boys graduate from the Academy. 284 290

Genma becomes involved in Guy and Shizune's staged attack intended to confront Tsunade's hemophobia. He initially refuses to stab Shizune, even after learning that she has agreed to the plan. Preparations include a precise target point and a Flying Thunder God mark inside her clothing, but Guy later changes the agreed senbon strike to a kunai attack, leaving Genma distraught as he watches Tsunade hesitate to respond. 310 311 312

Afterward, Tsunade acknowledges his effective use of Flying Thunder God. Genma's discovery that Guy has misled him about the Sobering Stone provokes his angry departure and involuntary Eight Inner Gates activation. 315

At the end of the three-month assignment, Genma says goodbye to Shizune but still resents Guy over the deception. During their departure, Guy gives him the bloodstained shirt Shizune wore during the staged attack, which Genma hurriedly accepts while attempting to appear indifferent. 324

Later Service

Genma joins Guy, Ebisu, Yamashiro Aoba, Raidō, and Tatami for reconnaissance around Kannabi Bridge, where he trains the Flying Thunder God with Raidō and Tatami between patrols. 329

He uses repeated Flying Thunder God flashes in the ensuing battle against Iwagakure and summons Iron Arm to protect Raidō and Tatami. 333 He later masters the technique and becomes part of the Fourth Hokage's Flying Thunder God Guard Team. 434

During the Kannabi fighting, Genma, Raidō, and Tatami launch simultaneous teleport-assisted attacks after fireballs draw the enemy's attention, killing three Iwagakure chunin. After Guy subdues Taiseki, Genma secures the final surviving chunin with a senbon at his throat. 332 334

When Guy departs to support Kakashi at Thundercloud Gorge, Genma and Ebisu remain with the bridgehead squad under orders. Wanting to contribute elsewhere, they join Aoba, Raidō, and Tatami in confronting Mahiru after the Iwagakure jonin climbs onto their side of the collapsed bridge. 337

Genma later reunites with Guy at Minato's tent in the Land of Grass when Guy returns with Obito and Rin. He runs forward to embrace his teammate. 375

Postwar Reunion and Fourth Hokage Service

After the war, Genma joins the friends gathered in Kakashi's hospital room and helps organize a larger reunion. He brings Aoba, Raidō, and Tatami to the barbecue restaurant and privately asks Guy whether Shizune has arrived. During the gathering, he states his ambition to become a reliable jonin. 399 400 401

As one of the original witnesses to Team 9's encounter with Yahiko and his companions near the Land of Rain, Genma is present when Jiraiya questions Guy about them and when the discussion turns to a confidential operation involving Amegakure. 404 406

Following Guy's punishment and Minato's succession as Fourth Hokage, Guy urges Genma to make the most of his connection to Minato. He explains that outsiders will already regard a Flying Thunder God pupil as one of the Fourth's direct subordinates, and encourages Genma to seek greater strength rather than withdraw because of gossip. Genma firmly agrees. 420

Fire Temple Escort and Daimyo Attack

Minato sends Genma and Ebisu to the Fire Temple to consult Guy regarding the proposed succession of the temple's abbacy. The two subsequently travel at the rear of the Fire Daimyo's procession in Konoha chunin uniforms. 428 429

A second explosion specifically targets them during the procession. Genma summons Iron Arm to shield Ebisu rather than escaping alone with the Flying Thunder God, but is struck by a rock shard in the abdomen and left seriously injured. Guy stabilizes him with the Mystical Palm Technique and summons Katsuyu for treatment, while Iron Arm also requires urgent care for severe injuries. 430

Despite his condition, Genma briefly regains consciousness and warns the others to remain alert for enemies, insisting that he will not die. Ebisu is shaken by the knowledge that Genma could have escaped but chose to protect him instead. 430

While recovering at the Fire Temple, Genma tells Guy that he has joined Minato's guard unit alongside Raidō and Tatami as a mastered Flying Thunder God user. 434

Return to Konoha

As Genma and Ebisu recover from the Daimyo attack, they meet with Guy and Chiriku at the Fire Temple. When they prepare to return to Konoha, Guy entrusts them with a letter explaining his new position as head of the Martial Monk Hall. 437

Guy also asks the pair to deliver his letter to Shibi personally while writing to his friends and superiors. 434

Guy's Temporary Rogue-Ninja Designation

After Guy's actions cause an international incident, Minato temporarily accepts Guy's rogue-ninja designation to protect Konoha's position while promising that neither he, Tsunade, nor the White Fang will pursue Guy and that his identity will be restored when conditions permit. Guy reflects that the situation will cause concern for those close to him, including Genma. 512 513

Reunion During Guy's Later Konoha Visit

During a later return to Konoha, Guy first seeks out Genma and Ebisu, finding them taking a break at a tea shop. Guy wears a half mask rather than changing his appearance, prompting Ebisu to question the risk of openly walking through the village. Genma remains composed and asks when Guy plans to leave. 645

After Guy says that he will depart the day after tomorrow, Genma remembers his approaching birthday and asks whether he will spend it at home the following day. Guy confirms that he will. 645
