Background / History
Captain Ginyu led the Ginyu Force to Earth under Frieza's orders to locate Vegeta. Upon arriving, he ordered Jeice to erase a city of 20,000 people simply to clear away onlookers, then directed the force to search with Scouters. Ginyu correctly suspected that Vegeta could suppress his power level and anticipated his use of an Artificial Full Moon, which the entire force destroyed before Vegeta could transform. 21
After Burter was killed, Ginyu blamed Guldo for delaying the group and regrouped with Jeice and Recoome. He rejected Recoome's suggestion to kill every Earthling, reasoning that Vegeta would not care and could simply leave the planet. 22 Instead, Ginyu destroyed Earth's spaceships and threatened to annihilate the planet unless Vegeta appeared. 23 24
While searching for Vegeta, Ginyu interrogated Demon King Piccolo about Vegeta's plans. Dissatisfied with Piccolo's explanation, he killed him with an energy blast through the chest. 26 He later captured Karin at the Lookout and threatened to kill him for Vegeta's location, but Shenron's summoning exposed Vegeta's position before Ginyu could act. 28
Ginyu confronted Vegeta after the latter's wish and watched Guldo be killed. In their battle, Vegeta severed Ginyu's left arm and revealed power beyond Ginyu's 120,000 combat power. Ginyu hesitated when Vegeta began coughing blood, believing the Saiyan had suddenly become helpless. 30 31
Vegeta ultimately surrendered so Ginyu would take him to Frieza and leave Earth intact. Ginyu complied with Frieza's order to keep Vegeta alive, transporting him from Earth with Jeice and Recoome. He chose not to destroy Earth, describing its ecology as decent and its inhabitants as “cute.” 32
Ginyu's arm was regrown through treatment during the journey. After Vegeta consumed all food aboard the ship, Ginyu and Jeice endured a month without provisions before reaching Planet Vegeta, where Vegeta had them restrained and denied food. 34 35
Still imprisoned when Zaron arrived, Ginyu attempted to intervene in Vegeta's conflict with Zaron. He attacked Vegeta after detecting an apparently low power level, but Vegeta humiliated and heavily injured him. 41 42 As a last resort, Ginyu used Body Change; Vegeta evaded the beam and redirected it into a nearby statue of King Vegeta. Ginyu was trapped in the statue, after which Vegeta destroyed Ginyu's original body. 43
Personality
Ginyu is ruthless, impatient, and easily enraged by failure. He destroys civilians without hesitation, kills Demon King Piccolo when the interrogation does not satisfy him, and repeatedly vents his frustration on Guldo. 21 22 26
As captain, he is also observant and tactical. He recognizes Vegeta's energy suppression, anticipates the Artificial Full Moon strategy, and uses threats against Earth and its spaceships to force Vegeta into the open. 21 23 24 However, his confidence repeatedly turns into carelessness: he underestimates Vegeta based on Scouter readings and falls for what he believes is an opening in battle. 30 31 42
