Background
The Witch Race considers itself the Orthodox Pangu Lineage. Its members inherit Pangu’s Merit of Opening the Heavens and originally regard managing the Primordial World as both their duty and birthright 2 3. Their ancestral seat is the Ancestral Land at the foot of Mount Buzhou, centered on Pangu Hall 8.
Before Zhu Jiuyin’s reforms, the race absorbed Turbid Qi from the land to preserve the Primordial World’s mountains, rivers, spiritual veins, and living beings. This task inflicted pain deep into body and soul. To offset it, Witches hunted demonic beasts and members of the Demon Race for blood, vitality, and creation energy, creating their fearsome reputation among other beings 1 13.
Turbid Qi also impaired the race’s temperament and thought. Their historic impulsiveness, violence, indifference to death, and inability to form Primordial Spirits are attributed to the constant pain and pollution of Turbid Qi rather than innate stupidity 13. They nevertheless possessed formidable instincts, strong loyalty, and the ability to contend with the Demon Race for Primordial World hegemony 2.
History
Retreat and “Lying Flat”
After Zhu Jiuyin foresees the Witch Race’s near-annihilation and recognizes that the Heavenly Dao and Hongjun are targeting them, he urges the race to abandon its struggle for hegemony with the Demon Race 1 2. The Twelve Ancestral Witches ultimately recognize Zhu Jiuyin’s supreme decision-making authority through a unanimous vote 8.
The race withdraws from its external territories and gathers within its Ancestral Land. Its long inactivity frightens the Demon Race and other Primordial powers, prompting the Demon Court to maintain a ten-thousand-year Dao Discussion Assembly while watching for a presumed Witch scheme 8 11.
The retreat is accepted even by many ordinary Witches. Members describe Turbid Qi absorption as agonizing and resent being shunned by the beings they protected 11. Once freed from the burden, the race becomes more cheerful, thoughtful, and receptive to cultivation; its cultivation speed exceeds its former rate by more than three times 13.
Expansion beyond the Ancestral Land
The Witch Race uses Pangu Hall, the Twelve Capital Divine Gods and Demons Formation, and the True Form of Pangu to support the creation of Great Thousand Worlds 18. By Chapter 68, it possesses eleven Great Thousand Worlds and intends to expand further into the Chaos World 68.
Although their withdrawal is meant to avoid conflict, other powers repeatedly pressure the race to resume absorbing Turbid Qi. Jie Yin and Zhun Ti’s disciples and many other beings kneel outside the Ancestral Land, seeking aid while placing public moral pressure on the Witches 63 64. Zhu Jiuyin rejects unconditional exploitation and demands either Western authority and resources or Hongjun’s personal apology before the race will intervene 65.
Earthly Dao and the Underworld
The Ancestral Witches eventually identify the Earthly Dao as their proper path, with Houtu chosen to lead the effort to awaken it 52 53. The Witch Race’s role expands from maintaining ley lines and processing Turbid Qi to operating Reincarnation and apprehending those burdened by heavy karmic force 207.
After replacing the Underworld’s former function, the will of the Witch Race becomes aligned with the will of the Earthly Dao 139. Most of its true elite forces later remain in the Underworld rather than contesting Primordial World hegemony directly 207.
Relations with Humanity
The Witch Race possesses an immense innate karmic debt to the Human Race, second only to its debt to Pangu. Zhu Jiuyin therefore supports Nuwa’s creation of humanity rather than obstructing it 75 76.
Witches secretly aid the Human Race during the Human-Demon War. Intermarriage produces Witch-Humans, whose bodies inherit Witch Race law affinity and physical strength while benefiting from humanity’s greater Primordial Spirit potential 155 205.
This closeness later becomes a source of conflict when some Witches interfere in Human Race politics to seek a share of human destiny 219. Zhu Jiuyin apologizes to human leaders and orders the Witch Race to treat humanity as an equal ally rather than an inferior party 219 220.
Physiology and Traits
The Witch Race is uniquely suited to Turbid Qi because its members are formed from Pangu’s essence blood and Turbid Qi. Turbid Qi is deadly poison to most beings but can be carried and digested by Witches within limits 64.
- Witches are born close to the laws of the Primordial World and possess exceptional physical bodies 13 205.
- They originally lack Primordial Spirits and therefore cannot calculate heavenly secrets or wield Innate Spiritual Treasures effectively 2 207.
- Reduced Turbid Qi exposure allows them to develop Primordial Spirits, changing a foundational racial weakness 13 91.
- Witches possess powerful law-based bodies but historically lag behind humans and Innate Demon Gods in Primordial Spirit cultivation 205.
- At equal Sub-Sage cultivation, a Witch can generally fight two opponents of other ancient hegemonic races; against less well-founded Human Race cultivators, one Witch may handle three to five opponents 207.
- The Witch Race reproduces through the Witch Race Blood Pool and through the union of Yin and Yang 207.
Governance
The Twelve Ancestral Witches are the race’s supreme authority; their unified decree compels every Witch to comply, regardless of rank or circumstance 8 18.
- Zhu Jiuyin — Time Ancestral Witch and holder of ultimate decision-making power; directs long-term strategy while declining to manage ordinary daily affairs 3 8.
- Dijiang — Eldest Ancestral Witch; handles daily management and later commits to implementing Zhu Jiuyin’s decisions 16 19.
- Houtu — Ancestral Witch with special affinity for the Earthly Dao; entrusted to lead the race’s Earthly Dao path and major negotiations 52 76.
- Great Witches — The race’s high-ranking combatants, including figures such as Chiyou and Xingtian 127 207.
- Ordinary Witches — Number in the billions and are noted for discipline, fearlessness, and obedience to the Ancestral Witches’ unified will 18 127.
Abilities and Resources
Turbid Qi absorption and ley-line maintenance
The Witch Race can absorb and digest Turbid Qi, preventing the decay of terrain, spiritual veins, and living beings across the Primordial World 1 64.
- Turbid Qi accumulation causes severe physical and spiritual pain 13.
- Excessive absorption historically drove the race to consume vitality from demonic beasts and Demon Race members 13 64.
- Their later cultivation methods combine Turbid Qi dissipation with the Qi of Creation, reducing dependence on flesh and blood 102 106.
- Their work maintaining ley lines, Reincarnation, and karmic order earns merit and fortune from the Earthly, Heavenly, and Humanity Daos 207.
Physical combat and law affinity
Witches are naturally powerful close-combatants with strong law comprehension and bodies able to outperform many same-realm opponents 13 207.
- Ancestral Witches dramatically exceed Great Witches even when cultivation is artificially equalized 222.
- Top Great Witches such as Xingtian can defeat three peers at the same cultivation level 222.
- Human-Witch descendants combine the race’s physical law affinity with human cultivation and Qi-refining aptitude 205.
Twelve Capital Divine Gods and Demons Formation
The Twelve Ancestral Witches’ signature formation can manifest the True Form of Pangu and provides power at the Zenith Heaven/Sage level 3 17.
- It is central to activating the immense power of Pangu Hall 18.
- The formation is regarded as the Witch Race’s greatest strategic trump card against hostile powers 14 17.
Pangu Hall
Pangu Hall is a Chaos Spirit Treasure forged by Pangu and the center of the Witch Race’s ancestral foundation 18.
- It can shield the Ancestral Witches from the perception of the Heavenly Dao and Hongjun 2.
- Its power initially exceeds the Ancestral Witches’ ability to control 18.
- Together with the Time-Space Mirror, it supports the race’s Great Thousand World strategy 68.
Treasury
After developing Primordial Spirits, the Witch Race can wield the Innate Spiritual Treasures accumulated in its treasury 207.
- Its treasury is said to contain the most and highest-grade Innate Spiritual Treasures in the Primordial World 207.
- It holds twelve Sea-Calming Pearls 207.
- It holds forty-eight Earth-Stabilizing Pearls used to stabilize the Primordial World’s ley lines 207.
Relationships
- Pangu — Creator and Father God; the Witch Race views itself as his most direct and filial lineage, bound to his duty of managing Turbid Qi and ley lines 2 13.
- Zhu Jiuyin — Supreme decision-maker and reformer who leads the race away from its foretold destruction 8 13.
- The Twelve Ancestral Witches — Founding rulers and supreme collective authority of the race 8 18.
- Demon Race — Historic rival in the struggle for Primordial World hegemony; relations improve somewhat after the Witch Race’s retreat and cultivation reform 6 120.
- Human Race — Allied race toward whom the Witches bear an immense karmic debt; frequent intermarriage produces Witch-Humans 75 155 205.
- Earthly Dao — The Witch Race’s chosen path and ultimate institutional foundation through the Underworld 53 139.
- Heavenly Dao and Hongjun — Viewed by Zhu Jiuyin as forces that suppress and seek to exploit the Witch Race 1 14 68.
- Jie Yin and Zhun Ti — Pressure the race to address Turbid Qi while seeking to exploit its labor and reputation 63 65.
Trivia
- The Witch Race was once widely stereotyped as “brutes” and “brainless,” but its members’ impaired judgment is linked to lifelong Turbid Qi pain rather than a lack of intelligence 2 13.
- The Demon Race’s fear of the Witch Race’s withdrawal causes it to exhaust resources hosting a ten-thousand-year Dao Discussion Assembly for guests and observers 11.
- The Witch Race’s Blood Pool can continue producing members as long as its fortune and the spiritual energy around Pangu Hall endure 207.
- Zhu Jiuyin later creates combat simulations in a Great Thousand World so Witches can satisfy their martial nature without joining the Human Race’s struggle for the Human Emperor position 222.
