Background / History

Hongjun originated as a Chaos Earthworm and possessed a karmic connection to Pangu. Alongside the Heavenly Dao, he regarded the Ancestral Witches as a danger because their survival could enable Pangu’s rebirth and threaten his control of the Primordial World. He dissipated their summoned True Form of Pangu and exiled the Witch Race from its ancestral land, but the Great Dao intervened because of the Witches’ Merit of Opening the Heavens. 5

During the Primordial Era, Hongjun was initially a second-tier powerhouse at the Sub-Sage realm. He later reached Hunyuan and became a Sage, but his position required him to remain at Purple Cloud Palace and defend the Primordial World from extra-territorial threats. 192

Yang Mei later tested Hongjun’s strength after his sainthood. Hongjun was defeated at first, then resisted with the Heavenly Dao’s power; Yang Mei withdrew out of concern for Pangu’s will and the danger of being trapped on Hongjun’s home ground. The encounter left Hongjun focused on defending the Primordial World rather than venturing into Chaos. 173

Personality

Hongjun is calculating, highly survival-driven, and deeply concerned with maintaining control over the Primordial World. He is willing to manipulate races, disciples, merit, and political offices to preserve his arrangements. When the Heavenly Dao considered favoring Zhu Jiuyin, Hongjun threatened to destroy the Primordial World rather than accept a threat to his own life. 73 108

He can also recover quickly from setbacks. After Pangu struck the Heavenly Dao across time and causality, Hongjun rapidly concluded that Pangu was constrained and would not return before the Immeasurable Tribulation. 47 His later interactions with Zhu Jiuyin gradually shift from hostility and suspicion toward negotiation, gratitude, and cooperation. 174 192 193

Story Role / Major Arcs

Suppression of the Witch Race

Hongjun and the Heavenly Dao treat the Witch Race as a threat tied to Pangu’s possible return. Their early suppression fails when the Great Dao protects the Witches’ merit and Pangu later strikes the Heavenly Dao from across infinite space-time. 5 47

Hongjun publicly swears by Mount Buzhou that he will no longer target the Witch Race and claims he will work with them to guard the Primordial World. Zhu Jiuyin recognizes the oath as deception and secretly prepares to counter Hongjun’s intended betrayal. 71 72

Conflict with the Heavenly Dao

After Zhu Jiuyin attained Hunyuan, the Heavenly Dao considered supporting Zhu Jiuyin’s vision. Hongjun regarded this as an existential threat, warning that he would rather shatter the Primordial World than allow himself to be replaced and killed. The Heavenly Dao retained him as Spokesperson while asking for support for Zhu Jiuyin’s proposal. 102 108

Heavenly Court and the Six Sovereigns

Hongjun proposed the Six Sovereigns and a Heavenly Court structure in response to the threat of Luo Hou and the need for stable governance. He agreed to manifest an avatar as Jade Emperor while Haotian and Yaochi handled daily administration. 159

He later expanded the system with the Great Emperors of the Southern, Western, and Eastern Poles, giving Hongjun, Zhu Jiuyin, and Houtu shared influence over the selection of sovereigns. 179

Cooperation with Zhu Jiuyin

Hongjun eventually endorsed Zhu Jiuyin’s plan to remodel the Primordial World’s “respiratory system” by improving Chaos Qi intake, innate spiritual energy conversion, and Turbid Qi expulsion. He stated that appointing Zhu Jiuyin as Great Emperor Ziwei was among his and the Heavenly Dao’s most correct decisions. 192

He later disclosed his role in plans surrounding Sun Wukong, including the intention for Sun Wukong to become the seventh Heavenly Dao Sage. Hongjun agreed that the Heavenly Dao would stop attempting to control Sun Wukong. 193 194

Notable Quotes

“If he was to be killed, so be it; it was better than passively waiting for death.” 108

“Good, good, good. Letting you take on the role of Great Emperor Ziwei was truly the most correct decision that I and the Heavenly Dao have ever made.” 192

Trivia

  • The Ancestral Witches call Hongjun an “old earthworm,” referencing his true origin as a Chaos Earthworm. 5 35
