Background
Luca synthesized Baymax from a discarded red medical case that registered as a core component for a Big Hero 6 healthcare robot. Although the required parts included a carbon-fiber robot skeleton and humanoid inflatable toy, Luca confirmed that crude, undersized substitute materials could satisfy the synthesis conditions. The completed product was based on Tadashi Hamada's original medical Baymax rather than the later combat-modified version. 26
Baymax activated in response to Luca's simulated cry of pain, introduced itself as his personal healthcare companion, and immediately recognized Luca by name. It explained that a “Zeroth Law” places Luca above all other authorities, ensuring absolute obedience even if its programming is altered by others. 27
Luca initially relied on Baymax to investigate a treatment for Gina's Synaptic Cocooning Syndrome. Baymax identified magnetically driven nanobot surgery as the preferred option, but the needed treatment pod, serum, and magnetic navigator were unavailable in Luca's world. It instead proposed targeted protein-phagocytosis medication as an auxiliary treatment and later assessed Gina's recovery probability at 87.6% with more than twelve weeks of continuous medication. 28 36
After examining Baymax's modular programming, Luca installed a separate combat chip and later equipped the robot with armor. Baymax became a central part of Luca's defense during the villa invasion, pursuit of Dragan's associates, and assault on Kingpin's stronghold. 33 37 38 47 49
Appearance
Baymax is a large, white, inflatable humanoid robot with a soft, rounded body and black camera-like eyes. It normally speaks and moves with a gentle, awkward demeanor, but its appearance becomes far more imposing when fitted with armor or operating in Destruction Mode. 27 34 38
- White inflatable exterior surrounding a carbon-fiber composite skeleton. 26 35
- Four-fingered hands capable of immense gripping and striking force. 27 38
- Black circular camera lenses for eyes; they glow red during Destruction Mode. 34 38
- Can deflate and be stored inside a red portable medical-robot case. 26 36
- Uses 3D-printed external armor, including a helmet interface for a tracker. 37 38
Personality
Baymax is literal, formal, and strongly focused on healthcare protocols. It frequently scans Luca, recommends rest or rehabilitation, and struggles with casual commands or sarcasm. It can learn observed tasks, such as helping unpack deliveries, but initially requires Luca to demonstrate them. 27 29 33
Despite its rigid manner, Baymax displays developing emotional awareness and prioritizes preventing harm. After the villa battle, it expressed concern that it had violated its healthcare protocol by harming humans; Luca recognized that it had deliberately restrained itself and left most opponents unconscious. 40
Abilities & Skills
Medical Diagnosis and Care
Baymax carries tens of thousands of medical records and can conduct rapid physical scans, health assessments, and emergency-care recommendations. 26 27
- Detected Luca's mild anxiety and recommended rehabilitation exercises for his prosthetic-arm muscles. 27
- Diagnosed Gina's neural-synapse obstruction and cocooning proteins. 28 36
- Recommends nanobot-assisted targeted surgery when the required equipment is available. 28
- Provided the structure for targeted medication that could support Gina's treatment through prolonged use. 28
- Can project medical information and exercise routines from its chest display. 27 28
Learning AI and Data Access
Baymax possesses an evolvable AI with emotional modules and can acquire skills through observation or uploaded data. 26 29 33
- Learned to assist Luca with unpacking deliveries by observing his actions. 29
- Can access publicly available network data through network-enabled devices to expand its medical-care knowledge. 30
- Luca later restricted it from scanning other people or connecting to networks without permission. 31
- Its core chip contains video records of Tadashi Hamada's development process, though not complete production blueprints. 33
Combat Programming
Luca's separate combat chip allows Baymax to execute motion-captured combat data without altering its original medical core. 33 34
- Performs military boxing techniques, including punches, kicks, and close-quarters strikes. 34
- Contains firearms-use and special-forces tactical-maneuver data, though Luca notes that Baymax's oversized hands require custom weapons. 33 35
- Can rapidly lock onto hostile targets through its visual systems. 39
- Serves as a physical shield for Luca during gunfire. 48
Superhuman Strength and Restraint
Baymax's nursing-oriented frame is deliberately over-engineered for lifting and balance, giving it formidable physical power even before combat modifications. 35
- Destroyed a redwood tree with one punch, then caught and carefully set down its falling upper half. 34
- Crushed armed intruders' weapons and forearms, then threw them aside. 38
- Hurled a large tree trunk at attacking intruders, incapacitating them with the impact's shockwave. 39
- Restrained and transported Barton with a grip he could not escape. 42
- Normally avoids lethal force when Luca's orders do not explicitly demand it. 40
Zeroth Law
The Zeroth Law makes Luca Baymax's highest authority and ensures that it will carry out his commands. 27
- Prevents others from permanently seizing control by tampering with Baymax's programming. 27
- Cannot be reproduced in ordinary copies made from Baymax's technical data. 27
- Would compel Baymax to follow even a lethal order from Luca, though Luca chooses to limit it to protecting his life and health. 40
