Background

As a child, Gui Mei entered a state of false death after drowning. His soul left his body and later fused back into it, causing his martial soul to mutate into a manifestation of his own soul. This left him with a martial soul that is difficult to classify: it is neither wholly a Body Martial Soul nor a conventional ghost-type martial soul. 118 162

By the time of Spirit Hall’s Soul Core experiments, Gui Mei was one of Qian Xunji’s trusted elders and worked in close partnership with Yue Guan. Their compatible martial souls allowed one to assist the other during the dangerous internal stages of Soul Core condensation. 79 80
