Background
Enel grew up without wings and was treated as a monster by others. He came to regard the suffering of his childhood as the fault of Skypiea and its people, eventually declaring himself a god and seeking revenge against the land. His personal ambition was to return to the moon. 69
As Skypiea’s self-proclaimed god, Enel ruled from Upper Yard through overwhelming lightning power and long-range Mantra. When Gato’s group entered Upper Yard, Enel answered Gato’s challenge with God’s Judgment, striking from afar without personally confronting them. 59
Gato defeated Enel after exploiting his weak physical conditioning, resistance to Enel’s lightning, and Enel’s pride. Enel survived a devastating Divine Void Strike by restarting his own heart with electricity, then pushed his Rumble-Rumble Fruit into Thunder God form before finally losing. 63 64 65
Gato recruited the defeated Enel by promising to help him return to the moon. Enel’s priests abandoned him after witnessing his defeat, leaving him with no remaining support when he joined the Six Paths Pirates. 66 67
Appearance
Enel is portrayed with a deliberately divine, Buddha-like appearance that complements his claim of godhood. 59
- Enormous earlobes.
- Bare upper body.
- Drum-like ornaments arranged behind him like a halo.
- In Thunder God form, becomes a towering blue giant composed of lightning. 64
- Surrounded by blue plasma when fighting at high output. 138
Personality
Enel is intensely arrogant and habitually calls himself a god, treating ordinary people as “mortals.” His pride causes him to underestimate opponents, particularly during his first battle with Gato, where he relies on elemental power despite his poor close-quarters ability. 62 63
His destructive impulses are rooted less in indiscriminate chaos than in resentment toward Skypiea for his childhood. Gato identifies his behavior as a grandiose, self-serious fixation and manipulates his need for believers to stop him from destroying Skypiea. 69 70
After joining the crew, Enel remains theatrical and boastful but develops attachment to his believers and companions. He becomes anxious when Skypieans and Shandians wage war, refuses to kill his believers, senses Gato’s danger through Observation Haki, and attempts to support the crew during the Enies Lobby conflict. 123 137
He is also inventive and highly receptive to technology. Enel enthusiastically experiments with electromagnetism, redesigns the Ark Maxim after observing Vinsmoke technology, and develops vessels that only he can operate. 115 125 177
Abilities & Skills
Rumble-Rumble Fruit
Enel can create, become, and control lightning. The fruit grants him extreme mobility, destructive output, and an elemental body that ordinary attacks cannot harm. 59 71
- Uses God’s Judgment to launch thick lightning bolts over vast distances. 59
- Created Thirty Million Volts—Thunder Beast as lightning creatures that pursue targets. 62
- Uses Thunder Dragon, a high-output lightning attack capable of overwhelming opponents. 63 65
- Can restart his own heart after fatal injury by electrically stimulating it. 63
- His lightning stimulates muscular growth and supports physical and Armament Haki training. 71
- Is weakened and incapacitated by Sea-Prism Stone; he was trapped after recklessly entering a Seastone prison. 79
Thunder God Form
Enel transforms into a giant lightning body that greatly increases his voltage and destructive presence. 64
- Initially manifested at 150 million volts. 64
- Reached 160 million volts during his rematch with Gato. 76
- Later increased his maximum output to 200 million volts, then 300 million volts. 204 225
- The transformation once imposed a major burden on him and limited his ability to evade attacks. 65
Observation Haki / Mantra
Enel’s Mantra has exceptional range, amplified by the Rumble-Rumble Fruit. He can monitor activity throughout Skypiea and detect danger involving distant allies. 59 137
- Detected Gato’s challenge from Upper Yard. 59
- Located Skypiea from the air, allowing the crew to travel there without waiting for the Knock Up Stream and Emperor Cloud to overlap. 122
- Quickly refined his Observation Haki through Crocodile’s training. 71
Armament Haki
Enel began training Armament Haki under Crocodile after joining the crew. 71 97
- Initially could not reliably use Armament Haki or coat objects, limiting his electromagnetic cannon against Logia opponents. 115
- Eventually mastered Armament Haki hardening. 225
Lightning Metallurgy and Engineering
Enel can use electricity to shape metal and construct machinery, making him the crew’s principal shipwright. 63 81
- Reshaped his golden staff into a trident during his battle with Gato. 63
- Was tasked with melting Bright Light and other metals into a new sword blank. 81
- Designed a replacement Ark Maxim using Cloud Iron and gold. 125
- Can directly shape Cloud Iron, a material as hard as steel but as light as clouds. 126
Electromagnetic Force
Through experimentation and shipbuilding, Enel learned to convert electricity into magnetic and kinetic force. 115 163
- Developed a railgun-like projectile attack, later named That Damn Italian Cannon. 115
- Powers Enel’s personal yacht exclusively through electromagnetic force. 177
- Can navigate conductive environments—particularly Tesoro’s Golden City—with exceptional freedom. 182
Raigo
Enel’s large-scale Ark Maxim technique gathers storm clouds into a massive sphere of lightning. 69
- Initially prepared Raigo to destroy Skypiea before Gato redirected his motivation toward preserving believers. 69 70
- Later used Raigo against Dressrosa after marking an evacuation boundary; the attack annihilated buildings and people in its path. 187 188
Equipment / Vehicles
- Ark Maxim — Enel’s flying ship, later rebuilt and refitted with the Six Paths Pirates and Shandia’s assistance. Its original design was based on a Birka mural, while Enel redesigned the replacement vessel with Cloud Iron and gold. 125 128 153
- Enel — A streamlined yacht designed by Enel and propelled solely through his electromagnetic force. 177
- Golden staff / trident — A golden weapon Enel can reshape through Lightning Metallurgy. 63
Relationships
- Gato — Captain and conqueror-turned-recruiter. Gato defeated Enel, promised to help him reach the moon, and repeatedly manipulates Enel’s god complex through his desire for believers. 65 66 70
- Crocodile — Rival and Haki mentor. Crocodile initially humiliated Enel in physical sparring, prompting Enel to accept him as a master; they later become close enough to banter as companions. 66 71 93
- Vivi — Enel initially mistakes Vivi for a destined goddess and prospective consort. She later rescues him from an uncomfortable encounter with prostitutes. 73 74 100
- Daz Bones — Enel threatens him after receiving rough treatment following his defeat, but Daz Bones remains indifferent to Enel’s former status. 67
- Skypieans — Enel’s believers. After returning to Skypiea, he reasserts control by promising to lead them in rebuilding their homeland. 123 124
- Shandia — Initially hostile to Enel’s rule; their labor later becomes essential to the Ark Maxim’s construction. 124 125
- Law — Fellow crew member whom Enel supports during the Enies Lobby battle after Law and Vivi are exhausted. 138
Story Role / Major Arcs
