Background

Crocodile operated in Alabasta under two complementary identities: the kingdom’s celebrated “hero” and Mr. 0, the hidden leader of Baroque Works. From Rainbase, he directed a layered plan to seize Alabasta while concealing his responsibility for the nation’s decline and desolation. His scheme and organizational leadership impress Gato, who considers him a born commander capable of “stealing a kingdom.” 42 45

He sought the Ancient Weapon Pluton, believing it could support his ambitions. This pursuit stemmed in part from the defeat that Whitebeard dealt him in the past; Gato accuses Crocodile of abandoning faith in his own strength after that loss. 49

Gato travels to Rainbase intending to recruit Crocodile as his first mate. After Crocodile confronts him at Rain Dinners, Gato defeats him in battle, withstands Erosion Reincarnation, and repeatedly pressures him to join the Six Paths Pirates. Crocodile ultimately accepts, provided that Gato does not prevent him from pursuing revenge against Whitebeard. 47 50

After joining Gato, Crocodile helps arrange trials meant to develop Vivi's abilities and requests permission to bring Daz Bones with him. 51 52 His departure and exposure as Mr. 0 enable Vivi to unite Alabasta's rebel and royal forces against Baroque Works; the organization is defeated after receiving orders not to cause casualties. 72

The World Government subsequently strips Crocodile of his Seven Warlords position and reclassifies him as a pirate. His former seat is later filled by Gato. 70 153

Appearance

Crocodile is a handsome man with the bearing of an overlord, usually seen in a desert cloak with a cigar between his lips. 47

  • A prominent scar runs across his face. 47
  • His usual hairstyle is slicked back. 50
  • His sand-based abilities can form or restore his clothing, leaving it undisturbed even after battle. 50
  • He can create elaborate sand constructs for dramatic effect, including sand sofas on which he and Daz Bones descend like seated dignitaries. 90

Personality

Crocodile is proud, ambitious, and intensely unwilling to submit to humiliation. Even after Gato decisively defeats him, he initially reacts with rage and repeatedly tries to retaliate. 48 49

He is also a calculating strategist. His long-term control of Rainbase, Baroque Works, and Alabasta demonstrates patience, planning, and administrative ability beyond simple combat strength. 45 46

Whitebeard remains Crocodile’s central fixation. Though the earlier defeat damaged his confidence, it also drives his decision to join Gato: he wants another chance to confront Whitebeard rather than remain in Alabasta pursuing Pluton. 49 50

Crocodile gradually accepts his place as Gato's vice-captain despite his irritation with Gato's recklessness and grand ambitions. He is pragmatic enough to remain with the crew even after considering rebellion, because he recognizes Gato's overwhelming strength. 51 72

He retains a personal code regarding Whitebeard. During the Summit War, Crocodile refuses the chance to attack Whitebeard while the latter is already being besieged by Admirals, considering such a victory meaningless. 217

Crocodile is highly conscious of style and spectacle, treating his devastating sand techniques as tools of war rather than mere entertainment even when Gato praises them as fireworks. 60

Abilities & Skills

Sand-Based Devil Fruit Powers

Crocodile possesses the Logia-type Sand-Sand Fruit, allowing him to transform his body into sand and manipulate sand on a large scale.

  • Uses elementalization to evade conventional physical attacks. 48
  • Can generate sandstorms, including Desert Spada, a rotating sandstorm attack that grinds down and erodes targets. 47 48
  • Can condense sand into a forty-meter blade capable of drying and cracking what it cuts into sand. 48
  • His sand manipulation is vulnerable to Gato’s wind techniques, which can disrupt its structure. 48
  • Haki-enabled attacks can strike him despite his elementalization. 48
  • Can convert surrounding soil into sand through contact, providing himself with a vast supply of material in suitable terrain. 60 61
  • Can manipulate prepared ordinary sand at range, including forming Sand Wall barriers capable of shielding his ship from the waves created by a giant Sea King. 83
  • Can create Infinite Sand World, spreading a sea of sand across a wide area to overwhelm targets regardless of their ability to anticipate his attacks. 60 61
  • Uses hardened, Haki-infused sand blades with enough precision to cut an entrance into a Sea King without initially alerting it. 85
  • Can create sand clones to deceive opponents and set traps, though the clones were initially limited by the lower Haki they could carry. 138 139
  • After awakening the Sand-Sand Fruit, can maintain control over sandstorms powerful enough to alter an entire nation's ecology. 225

Erosion Reincarnation

Crocodile’s most powerful documented technique rapidly drains moisture from a target through contact.

  • Can erode even rock into sand. 49
  • He uses it after catching Gato’s leg, intending to desiccate him completely. 49
  • The technique withers Gato’s leg, though Gato resists the full effect with chakra and later restores it with water. 50
  • Can be used efficiently against inanimate terrain to tunnel through solid ground and create passages during infiltration operations. 108 109

Life-Ending Reincarnation

Life-Ending Reincarnation is an enhanced form of Crocodile's moisture-draining power developed after his defeat by Gato.

  • It turns and dries everything it reaches into sand, allowing the sandification to expand through a target's body from the point of contact. 86 87
  • Crocodile uses it inside a giant Sea King to destroy its swim bladder, organs, muscles, and ultimately its entire body, leaving a lifelike sand sculpture. 86 87
  • The resulting Annihilation Sand remains dangerous enough to erode Gato unless he protects himself with Roaring Thunder Armor. 87
  • Maintaining the technique over an enormous target consumes immense stamina and leaves Crocodile temporarily exhausted. 87

Sand Burst Star

Sand Burst Star, formerly called Sand Sea Coffin, is Crocodile's primary large-scale restraint technique.

  • He compresses an enemy within an expanding sea of sand until it forms a dense, planet-like sphere. 61
  • The technique was renamed at Gato's suggestion after Crocodile used it to defeat Enel's Dumpling Priest. 61
  • After mastering Armament Haki hardening, Crocodile can coat the restraining sand with Haki, making Sand Burst Star capable of immobilizing powerful close-combat opponents. 196

Haki

Crocodile has developed both Observation Haki and Armament Haki through repeated sparring and combat.

  • His improved Observation Haki lets him react in advance to Enel's lightning-based attacks. 61 62
  • He combines Armament Haki with his sand constructs to improve their sharpness, durability, and combat effectiveness. 85
  • He awakens Armament Haki hardening during his battle with Annie, enabling his main body and sand clones to wield substantially stronger Haki. 138 139
  • He later completely masters Armament Haki hardening. 163

Devil Fruit Weaknesses

Like other Devil Fruit users, Crocodile is severely weakened by immersion in seawater.

  • He can manipulate ordinary, externally prepared sand to protect himself from water-based attacks as long as the seawater does not submerge him. 83
  • When exposed directly to seawater while exhausted, he loses his strength and is unable to escape without Gato's help. 87
  • Sea-Prism Stone resists his sandification and disrupts his control over sand that touches it. 109

Strategy and Leadership

Crocodile is an accomplished organizer and political schemer.

  • Built Rainbase into Alabasta’s most prosperous and secure city under his public identity as its protector. 46
  • Directed Baroque Works while maintaining his position as a Seven Warlord. 42 45
  • Designed a multi-layered plan to take control of Alabasta. 45
  • Uses his understanding of the Marines' sense of justice to coerce information from captives without needing to threaten them directly. 122
  • Trains Vivi, Enel, and Trafalgar Law in Haki through harsh close-combat sparring. 97 98
  • Employs traps, feints, clones, and Haki concealment effectively against opponents who would otherwise surpass him in direct combat. 138 139
  • Coordinates effectively with Enel in battle, serving as bait for Enel's powerful Kamui Electromagnetic Cannon when the situation requires it. 195

Salt Manipulation

Crocodile can extend his fine-particle control beyond ordinary sand.

  • After testing Gato's theory that sand consists of varied minerals and fine particles, he learns to manipulate salt grains, though doing so is more difficult than controlling sand. 179
  • He carries a gourd filled largely with salt for training and for removing Golden Sparkle. 179

Relationships

  • Gato — Captain of the Six Paths Pirates. Gato defeats and recruits Crocodile, naming him vice-captain; Crocodile joins to pursue Whitebeard, though their relationship begins with hostility and mutual provocation. Over time, they develop effective battlefield coordination and an abrasive camaraderie built on mutual confidence in strength. 48 50 53 85
  • Whitebeard — Past opponent whose defeat of Crocodile shattered his confidence; Crocodile remains determined to challenge him again. He refuses to exploit Whitebeard's weakened state during the Summit War, wanting a meaningful victory. 49 50 217
  • Nico Robin / Miss All Sunday — Baroque Works agent and one of the few people aware of Crocodile’s search for Pluton. 48 49
  • Princess Vivi — Princess of the kingdom Crocodile secretly undermines through Baroque Works. Following Baroque Works' fall, he harshly trains Vivi in Haki, though he initially does not acknowledge her as an equal crew member. 42 45 74 97 98
  • King Cobra — Monarch of Alabasta, whose kingdom Crocodile targets through his covert operation. 45 46
  • Daz Bones — Crocodile's trusted subordinate. Crocodile asks Gato to allow Daz Bones to accompany the crew, and Daz Bones continues to follow Crocodile's orders without hesitation. 51 52 119
  • Enel — Fellow Six Paths Pirates officer and frequent rival. Crocodile initially restrains Enel after his recruitment, later trains alongside him, and repeatedly clashes with him over pride and their relative strength. 67 97 194
  • Trafalgar Law — A younger crewmate whom Crocodile trains in Haki and close-quarters combat. 97 98
  • Annie — P9 agent whom Crocodile defeats by using a strengthened sand clone as a decoy before impaling her with a sand blade. 138 139
