Background / History

Akainu’s uncompromising ideology predates his conflict with Norse. During the Ohara incident more than a decade earlier, he ordered the bombardment of an evacuation ship carrying civilians on the possibility that archaeologists had boarded it. The act established his belief that all possible evil must be eradicated, regardless of collateral casualties. 39

After Norse stopped his heart in their first battle, Akainu was reported to be near death and transferred from Marine Headquarters to the World Government. A later account states that he had died, but the Celestial Dragons restored him and returned him to the path of strength. 43 44 147

He spent six months training relentlessly with the specific goal of defeating Norse. 122 Later, the World Government subjected promising Marine officers to extreme training; Akainu successfully awakened rather than becoming one of those sealed away after failing the process. 172

Appearance

Akainu is a towering, muscular Marine officer with a severe, sharp-eyed demeanor. He commonly wears a Marine cap marked with “Thorough Justice,” an open red shirt, and a justice coat, and smokes cigars. 39 40

He is ruthless toward his own subordinates when their safety conflicts with his objective. During his assault on Hancock, spreading magma consumed petrified Marines; Akainu accepted their deaths as battlefield sacrifices rather than abandoning his pursuit. 40

Despite his hostility toward Norse, Akainu respects strength and conviction. He recognizes Norse as a formidable opponent, confronts him without retreating, and trains obsessively after his defeat rather than accepting humiliation. 41 42 122
