Background / History

Norse arrived at Amazon Lily three years before 1509 after falling into the sea and losing his strength. Boa Hancock rescued him; afterward, he was forced to board the Kuja Pirates' ship under conditions he resented. At age fifteen, he became part of the crew but spent the following three years outwardly as an inconspicuous errand runner, handling cooking, salvaging, cleaning, and other chores while concealing his strength. 1 10

He joined Hancock with the stated purpose of helping destroy the Celestial Dragons' rule, but rejects being called “Boa Norse,” insisting that his achievements and consequences belong to him alone. 4 12

After defeating Hancock in a duel, Norse was formally recognized as vice-captain of the Kuja Pirates. He subsequently protected the crew against Marine Headquarters, defeating Aokiji's force and demanding a bounty commensurate with his threat. 6 14 17

His notoriety rose rapidly after battles with Zephyr, Golden Lion Shiki, Akainu, and Kizaru. Although Marine Headquarters suppressed details of these defeats, Norse's bounty climbed from 100 Berries to 1.2 billion, then 1.5 billion Berries. 12 25 44

Norse later confronted Doflamingo's criminal operations, defeated Jack and Doflamingo, freed the enslaved Tontatta, and fought Kaido in space. Kaido ultimately lost to him and was later placed on Mars to train under Norse's supervision. 117 120 143

After awakening the Sun-Sun Fruit, Norse created multiple suns in the sky, killed a member of the Five Elders by transporting him into a sun, and spent three months absorbing solar power. During this conflict, he revealed that he was not originally from the world of pirates. 137

Norse subsequently pursued increasingly cosmic ambitions, developing the Nature-Nature Fruit on multiple planets and seeking to master the Space Fruit so that he could travel between worlds. He later led his companions through the worlds of the Seven Deadly Sins and Fairy Tail, where he organized the Sun God Temple Guild and founded the Magic Association to maintain order. 167 185 226 229

Appearance

Norse is a blond, over-six-foot-tall young man who commonly wears white clothing. His physique changes drastically when he activates Demon Back.

  • Thick, tousled golden hair. 1
  • Usually wears a white jacket and trousers; has also worn a white shirt with red beach shorts. 6 20
  • Appears pale-faced and comparatively unassuming while suppressing his physical strength. 29
  • Demon Back enlarges and hardens his musculature, bursts his shirt, and manifests a demonic pattern across his back. 23
  • His hair stands upright and wild when Demon Back is active. 24
  • Temporarily lost his hair after excessively using his power while helping Enel confront his inner darkness. 59
  • In his solar true form, he can become an immense body of sunlight capable of drawing upon light from throughout the universe. 238

Personality

The Sun-Sun Fruit compels Norse to maintain an arrogant, invincible bearing. If he fails to do so, he becomes physically restless and may feel an urge to release his power in a destructive rampage. This effect gradually made arrogance and self-confidence central to his everyday conduct. 1 17

Despite his boastfulness, Norse is protective of the Kuja Pirates and repeatedly places himself between them and powerful enemies. He promised to protect Sonia and Gorud, intervened to save Hancock from Akainu, and seeks to raise the crew's overall strength. 14 29 40

He is also pragmatic about violence. Norse spared the surviving Donquixote crew to deliver a message to Doflamingo, but killed Gladius after the latter resumed attacking following surrender. 28 29

Norse's protection extends to people and worlds he considers under his care. He freed and healed the Tontatta, promised protection to the giants, restored damage caused by his allies, and views himself as responsible when companions he brought to another world threaten its inhabitants. 117 185 195 201

His benevolence is tempered by a cruel and controlling streak toward enemies. He released the Ten Commandments for his own amusement, tortured Monspeet and Derieri into submission, and repeatedly offers defeated opponents the choice between obedience and destruction. 189 194 236

Abilities & Skills

Sun-Sun Fruit

Norse wields the Sun-Sun Fruit, a Logia-class Devil Fruit described as rarer and of a higher order than the Glint-Glint Fruit. Its powers center on light, heat, solar gravity, vitality, and destructive solar phenomena. 1 16

  • Its power tempers Norse's body toward the human limit. 1
  • Extreme heat and sunlight make many ice- and magma-based attacks ineffective or disadvantaged against him. 16 41
  • The Fruit's side effect forces him to act with invincible arrogance or risk discomfort and loss of control. 1 17
  • Its awakening allowed Norse to manifest multiple suns, including a second sun capable of greatly reinforcing his solar domain. 137 208
  • Norse can draw energy from suns and ambient light across the universe, making sunlight a major source of recovery and amplification. 120 137 167 238

  • Can be deployed against extremely high-level magical attacks, though Norse supplements it with other powers when necessary. 209

Sun-and-Air Mode

A large-scale recovery mode that draws energy and life-supporting elements from the environment.

  • Requires Norse to be unclothed to commune fully with the environment. 36
  • Draws energy from sunlight, photosynthesis, the air, and geothermal sources. 36
  • Restored his vitality after the battle with Shiki. 36 37
  • Withers plants, cracks soil, and dries the air within roughly a thousand-meter radius. 37

A physical transformation described as a power awakened by surpassing the limits of bodily strength.

  • Massively enlarges Norse's muscles, accelerates his blood flow, and produces a demonic pattern on his back. 23
  • Granted enough raw strength to send Zephyr's arm flying with a punch and defeat a thousand-meter Sea King in one blow. 24
  • Can be used alongside Armament Haki and solar powers. 28 35
