Background
Shiki was a feared pirate of Roger’s era. During a past battle with Roger at sea, lightning struck Shiki’s ship and drove a ship’s wheel into his head. He survived, but the wheel left him bald and could not be removed without killing him. His experience made him deeply hostile toward lightning. 66
He was once captain of the Flying Pirate Crew and controlled Merveille, a group of floating islands containing mutated beasts, IQ Plants, and genetic-research facilities. Before the Great Pirate Era, he attempted to make Fish-Man Island his subordinate, offering to raise it to the surface within ten years; the kingdom instead chose Whitebeard’s protection. 69 73 157
After vanishing from public view for more than a decade, Shiki returned to the seas with his island ship and his two famous swords fixed beneath his feet in place of legs. 15 31 65
Appearance
Shiki is an older man with golden hair, a fierce face, and a habitual cigar. For much of the story, he has a ship’s wheel embedded in his bald head and uses swords in place of his missing legs.
- The wheel lodged in his head was caused by lightning striking his ship during his battle with Roger. 66
- He wielded Sakura Ten and Withered Wood beneath his feet before receiving replacement legs. 31 139
- His golden hair rises dramatically when his strength returns or his fighting spirit surges. 40
- He later had the wheel removed and regained the ability to walk through Norse’s healing. 139
Personality
Shiki is intensely proud, arrogant, and obsessed with the reputation he earned as a legendary pirate. He reacts badly to being dismissed as outdated, weak, or unworthy of recognition, and he eagerly seeks battles against opponents such as Garp, Mihawk, Sengoku, and Kaido. 44 79 80 105 163
He is also calculating in combat. He uses Observation Haki to track movements, retreats when a situation is unfavorable, attacks from the air, and exploits terrain through his Float-Float Fruit. 31 32 66
Before joining the Kuja Pirates, Shiki showed little concern for collateral damage or innocent lives. Norse forced him to adapt to the crew’s rules: members must coexist peacefully and must not casually harm innocents. Shiki ultimately accepted these conditions in exchange for a place among the crew and the promise of being healed. 35 65 67
Despite his pride, he becomes dependent on Norse’s food and medical treatment. By his later appearances, he refuses meals not prepared by Norse. 64 185
Abilities & Skills
Float-Float Fruit
Shiki’s Devil Fruit allows him to remove gravity from objects, terrain, water, and himself.
- Flies freely and uses his island ship as an airborne base. 31 75
- Makes cargo, treasure, ships, and entire landmasses float. 78 103 108
- Lifted a thousand-mile stratum of land and dropped it on Norse. 35
- Can create and manipulate lion-shaped masses from earth, sand, clouds, and seawater. 33 105 152
- Claimed that, at his limit, he could control ten islands and raise them ten thousand meters into the sky. 108
- After awakening, could make the environment itself rise and fall and suspend large numbers of enemies in the air. 163 209
- Seawater remains dangerous to him as a Devil Fruit user, although he can suspend it with his power before it touches him. 175
Swordsmanship
Shiki is a former master swordsman who continued fighting with swords attached beneath his feet after losing his legs.
- Uses Sakura Ten and Withered Wood to launch flying slashes. 31
- His slashes can cut through streets, Marine installations, and broad areas of terrain. 31 75 79
- Fought Dracule Mihawk, forcing the world’s strongest swordsman to take his challenge seriously. 79 80
- Uses techniques including Lion Thousand-Slice Valley, Great Lion Thousand-Slice Valley, and Chop Wave. 32 66 105
Haki
Shiki possesses both Observation Haki and Conqueror’s Haki.
- Uses Observation Haki to detect and evade Norse’s movements and Enel’s lightning attacks. 31 66
- Enhances his sword techniques and physical presence with Conqueror’s Haki. 32 80
- His Conqueror’s Haki can affect Marines hundreds of meters away. 105
Lion Techniques
Shiki combines his Devil Fruit control with lion-shaped constructs.
- Lion’s Majesty: Imperial Palace Cloud Roll — Forms a massive thundercloud lion head that descends on its target. 33
- Lion: Earth Roll / Lion’s Ground Roll — Creates enormous lions from ground, sand, or other material under his control. 105 116
- Rift-Creation Blade — A technique used to destroy Enel’s Thunder Dragon. 66
- Lion Scroll — An awakened construct large enough to devour suspended Purgatory creatures. 209
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sakura Ten — One of Shiki’s two famous swords; formerly attached beneath one foot. 31
- Withered Wood — One of Shiki’s two famous swords; formerly attached beneath one foot. 31
- Island ship — A massive floating vessel large enough to carry the Kuja Pirates’ ships and function as a private island. 69
- Merveille — His former floating-island base, containing IQ Plants, mutated beasts, and genetic laboratories. 69 73
- Ship’s wheel — Formerly embedded in his head; its removal was believed fatal until Norse healed him. 66 139
Relationships
- Norse — Began as Shiki’s opponent after Norse confronted him over the Kuja Pirates. Norse defeated, captured, treated, recruited, and later fully healed Shiki; Shiki becomes loyal enough to carry out Norse’s requests. 31 63 65 139 157
- Enel — Initially rivals for standing within the Kuja Pirates. Enel defeated Shiki after exploiting his vulnerability to lightning, becoming First Commander while Shiki became Second Commander; the two were later assigned to build a sea-and-sky vessel together. 66 67
- Indigo — Shiki’s loyal subordinate and adviser. Indigo encouraged him to join the Kuja Pirates and provided insight into IQ gene experiments. 63 64 74
- Gol D. Roger — A past rival whose battle with Shiki ended when lightning struck Shiki’s ship. Shiki later visited Roger’s execution site in Loguetown. 66 76
- Sengoku — Longtime Marine adversary. Shiki fought him directly in Alabasta but was eventually overwhelmed by Sengoku’s Great Buddha power. 105 107
- Monkey D. Garp — A rival from Shiki’s earlier era whom Shiki was eager to challenge again upon learning that Garp had returned to East Blue. 79
- Dracule Mihawk — Swordsmanship rival. Shiki challenged Mihawk over the title of the world’s strongest swordsman. 79 80
- Boa Hancock — A fellow Kuja Pirate whom Shiki was required to respect as Captain Hancock. He later intervened when Shu Xia attacked and suppressed her with seawater. 65 175
- Kaido — A powerful rival whose battle with Shiki resulted in both of their Devil Fruits awakening. 163
Story Role / Major Arcs
Conflict with Norse
Shiki first confronts Norse while targeting the Kuja Pirates. He dismisses Norse because of his low bounty, sacrifices a subordinate as a disposable attacker, and attempts to use aerial mobility and flying slashes to control the battle. 31
The two battle ten thousand meters above the sea. Shiki uses Conqueror’s Haki, Lion Thousand-Slice Valley, and cloud-lion attacks, while Norse counters with overwhelming solar abilities. Their conflict continues for five days and five nights, leaving Shiki severely injured and eventually captive. 32 33 37 64
Long Ring Long Land and Capture
At Long Ring Long Land, Shiki attempts to kill local herdsmen and then lifts a thousand-mile layer of land into the air to crush Norse. Norse destroys the falling landmass with Invincible Sun Fist. 35
After the battle, Shiki is restrained, weakened, and repeatedly refuses to submit. Kizaru later tries to execute him, but Shiki blocks the attack with Sakura Ten and recovers enough strength to confront the Admiral after consuming Norse’s food. 38 40
Recruitment into the Kuja Pirates
Shiki’s health deteriorates after his defeat. Norse diagnoses him with anorexia, heals him with sunlight, and restores him through cooking. Shiki eventually offers all of Merveille’s assets in exchange for joining the Kuja Pirates and receiving help with his grudge against East Blue. 63 64 65
After fighting Enel, Shiki is named the Kuja Pirates’ Second Commander. Norse orders him to follow the crew’s principles, cooperate with Enel, and avoid harming innocents; in return, Norse promises to remove the wheel from Shiki’s head. 67
East Blue Return
Shiki destroys Loguetown’s Marine base on Norse’s orders, publicly revealing that the Golden Lion has returned. He later visits Roger’s execution platform and shows unexpected restraint toward civilians despite his violent reputation. 75 76
He challenges Mihawk, clashes with Garp’s forces, and has his arm severed during the confrontation. Norse subsequently regrows the arm. 79 80 81
Alabasta and Dressrosa
In Alabasta, Shiki battles Sengoku in a one-on-one fight. He uses Lion: Earth Roll and Conqueror’s Haki but is injured and forced to retreat from Sengoku’s Great Buddha attacks. 105
He later lifts an entire protected garden containing ruins into the sky, claiming it as Kuja Pirates territory and preventing Crocodile from freely reaching the Poneglyph within. 108
In Dressrosa, Shiki joins the Kuja Pirates’ campaign against Doflamingo’s forces and treats threats to the crew’s women as a personal affront. 112 175
Recovery and Awakening
Norse ultimately removes the wheel from Shiki’s head and gives him replacement legs, restoring him completely after years of fighting with swords beneath his feet. 139
During a later battle with Kaido, Shiki awakens the Float-Float Fruit. Their fight is stopped after both combatants achieve awakening. 163
Later Actions
Shiki assists Norse’s plan to relocate fish-men and merfolk by searching for a large island capable of housing hundreds of thousands of people. 157
In later cross-world conflicts, he uses his awakened Float-Float Fruit to remove footing from masses of Purgatory creatures and eliminate them with Lion Scroll. 209
Trivia
- Shiki’s former bounty of 1.8 billion Berries becomes a source of jealousy when Norse’s bounty reaches 1.5 billion in less than four months. 44
- He has a poor sense of direction and relies on Norse’s celestial navigation when traveling to Merveille. 69
- Lightning is a major psychological weakness because it caused the ship’s wheel injury that changed his life. 66
- He is highly motivated by merit points because Norse tied the removal of his wheel to his contributions to the Kuja Pirates. 74 103
- By the time of the giants’ village visit, Shiki refuses to eat food unless Norse cooked it. 185
