Background
Vegeta was the young son of King Vegeta. When Indra visited Planet Vegeta, Vegeta had already left the planet to train at only five years old 3. He survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta because he was away on a mission with Raditz and Nappa. Rather than mourn the lost throne, he dismissed the possibility of becoming king and resolved to continue fighting 8.
Following Raditz's death, Vegeta and Nappa learned of Earth's Dragon Balls and the Divine Sword. Vegeta became interested in both, viewing them as potential means of gaining power 14. He arrived on Earth ahead of schedule, seeking the Dragon Balls and Son Goku, but his campaign ended in defeat. Indra erased his left arm, while his tail was also lost during the battle; Goku later drove him into the sky with a Quadruple Kaioken Kamehameha 21 22.
Vegeta survived and went to Namek in pursuit of the Dragon Balls. There, he learned that Frieza—not a meteor—had destroyed Planet Vegeta and killed the Saiyans who had returned there. He killed Dodoria after hearing the truth and dedicated himself to becoming a Super Saiyan capable of defeating Frieza 32. His attempt to wish for the transformation failed because the Dragon Balls could not grant a wish beyond their power 38 43.
Appearance
Vegeta is a Saiyan warrior who typically wears battle armor and formerly used a scouter 26 32.
- Lost his left arm and tail after the Earth conflict; neither could be restored by advanced healing technology 26.
- Regained a tail later, enabling his Great Ape-based transformations 129.
- His stable Super Saiyan 4 form has red fur and a red tail 138.
- His Super Saiyan Blue form is marked by blue hair and aura 205.
Personality
Vegeta is intensely proud of his royal status, repeatedly calling himself the Saiyans' greatest or most gifted warrior. His rivalry with Goku is central to his actions: Goku's repeated advances in power provoke jealousy, humiliation, and renewed training rather than surrender 20 44 107.
He is ruthless in his earlier appearances, treating Earth's fighters as beneath him and killing opponents such as Cui, Dodoria, and Pui Pui without hesitation 27 32 102. He also refuses subservience. Although he permitted Babidi to unlock his latent power, he resisted Spirit Control and openly rejected Babidi's orders 102.
Over time, Vegeta develops attachments to Earth. Emily helps him attain the peaceful heart needed for Super Saiyan, and his life with her and their child gives him a reason to oppose threats to Earth rather than destroy it 64 222.
