Background / History

Piccolo initially presents himself as the self-proclaimed Demon King and abandons young Son Gohan in the wilderness to harden him. After witnessing Gohan defeat a dinosaur with a single punch, Piccolo recognizes that the boy’s immense power lacks technique and decides to train him as an asset against the coming Saiyans. 1 2

His relationship with Gohan gradually changes his nature. Kami observes that Piccolo is no longer purely evil and has developed admirable qualities despite still retaining the Demon King’s ambition and demeanor. 4 21

Piccolo first learns he may be a Namekian when Vegeta and Nappa identify him as one. He is initially confused by the claim, having believed himself to be part of the demon clan, but becomes determined to learn about Namek. 15 31
