Background / History

Wu Zhangkong was once a disciple of Shrek Academy before becoming a teacher at Eastsea Academy. By the time Xiling enrolls, he is assigned as the homeroom teacher of the academy’s lowest-ranked Class Five, where he immediately establishes an unforgiving standard for both discipline and combat ability 8 9.

He transforms Class Five’s routine through physical conditioning, theory lessons, sparring, and direct criticism. After the class begins proving its potential, Wu oversees Zero Class and secures weekly access to the Spirit Pagoda’s Spirit Ascension Platform for its members’ cultivation 12 39.

Following Xiling’s abrupt departure from the Skysea Alliance Grand Tournament period, Wu prioritizes the students’ mental state over tournament results. He later reunites with Xiling after the latter kills an evil Soul Master with Super Douluo-level combat strength 96 97.

Wu’s experience with Xiling and the Skysea Alliance tournament causes him to question the validity of Shrek Academy’s long-held glory. Though he hopes Shrek can be reformed into what an academy should be, he later acknowledges the severity of its institutional problems and listens seriously to Xiling’s conclusion that meaningful change may require its destruction 83 176. After the tournament, he gives up his plan to send his students to Shrek’s Inner Court as a predetermined goal, leaving their eventual choices to them 84.

After returning to Shrek Academy, Wu brings Tang Wulin to Sea God Island for special training and recruits Xiling as a teaching assistant for one semester, paying him out of his own pocket. He entrusts Xiling with arranging the students’ cultivation, secondary-profession, and combat curriculum, accepting Xiling’s demand to remove their blind reverence for Shrek’s glory 157 170 171.

Wu Zhangkong is stern, exacting, and unsparing in his judgment. He considers natural talent worthless without effort, discipline, and practical skill; students who rely on excuses, martial-soul classifications, or innate advantages are harshly reprimanded 9 13.

Despite his cold manner, he is deeply invested in his students’ growth. He creates demanding training conditions, critiques failures directly, and emphasizes character and mentality above fleeting fame or competition rankings 12 21 97. His standards soften only when students demonstrate genuine ability or resolve, as shown by his recognition of Xiling’s strength and his willingness to admit when he is impressed 12.

He can also show unexpected tolerance toward exceptional students. When Xiling sets out a rocking chair during Class Five’s training, Wu silently accepts it; he even accepts fruit from him before ordering the other students to resume running 18.

Wu is capable of reassessing deeply held beliefs when confronted with evidence. The arrogance displayed by Shrek students and Xiling’s criticisms cause him to doubt Shrek’s glory rather than defend it blindly, although he still wishes to preserve the academy’s better ideals 83 170 176.

His loyalty is personal rather than merely institutional. Despite being affiliated with both Shrek Academy and the Tang Sect, Wu refuses to treat Xiling as an enemy because of Xiling’s conflict with Tang San, stating that his sword will not be raised against a friend 191.

Class Five Training

Wu Zhangkong introduces himself as Class Five’s teacher and immediately requires every student to state their martial soul, soul power, and intended Soul Master path. He begins the class’s reform through direct-combat lessons and severe criticism of complacency 9 10.

He personally spars with Xiling while initially offering to limit himself to Xiling’s level and first three soul skills. Xiling asks him to fight at full strength; forced into equipping Heavenly Ice, Wu ultimately recognizes Xiling as an opponent beyond any ordinary Soul Elder 11 12.

Zero Class Development

As Zero Class forms, Wu enforces physical training, teamwork exercises, spiritual-power tests, and Battle Armor instruction. He grants Xiling extensive freedom as a teaching assistant while maintaining demanding standards for the other students 17 18 36.

He brings Zero Class to the Spirit Ascension Platform and Hall of Heroes, using simulated historical Soul Masters to expose the difference between the students’ current strength and true combat experience 39 49 50.

Skysea Alliance and Xiling’s Departure

Wu prepares Zero Class for the Skysea Alliance Grand Tournament and later reaches Soul Saint level 73 77 79. After Xiling departs and Gu Yue follows, Wu dismisses the tournament’s importance compared with the students’ damaged fighting spirit and mentality 97.

He explains that Gu Yue and Xie Xingfang’s departures leave the remaining students unable to maintain their previous state of mind. Rather than force them to continue for results or prestige, Wu supports their early withdrawal from the tournament 97. He subsequently abandons his intention to direct them toward Shrek’s Inner Court regardless of their own wishes 84.

Shrek Academy Teaching

After Zero Class’s members arrive at Shrek Academy, Wu continues guiding Tang Wulin and the others. He recruits Xiling as a teaching assistant and entrusts him with helping the students improve their cultivation without neglecting the Four Major Secondary Professions needed for Battle Armor development 157 170.

Wu agrees to Xiling’s condition that the curriculum dismantle the students’ blind faith in Shrek’s glory. He later admits that he had hoped to remove Shrek’s corrupt elements and restore the academy to its proper purpose, but is forced to confront the possibility that its entrenched problems cannot be solved through reform alone 170 176.

Star Luo Delegation

During the voyage to Star Luo Continent, Wu wins a Most Handsome Man award at the delegation’s banquet after Xiling puts him forward for it, drawing an awkward, resentful look from him 186. When sea soul beasts attack the fleet, Wu uses Heavenly Ice and his Martial Soul Avatar to freeze a large section of sea. The frozen surface stabilizes the ships’ situation and gives the Soul Masters a platform from which to fight 188.

After witnessing Xiling’s overwhelming power against a sea soul beast, Wu wonders whether he might be a god 190. He later confronts Xiling about Tang Wulin’s Blue Silver Emperor and Clear Sky Hammer, correctly inferring Tang Wulin’s connection to Tang San. Learning that Xiling considers Tang San an enemy does not change Wu’s loyalty to Xiling as a friend 191.

During the All-Continent Young Soul Master Elite Tournament, Wu supports Xu Xiaoyan and the other students against the pressure exerted by Long Yue, urging them to trust in their own ability to create miracles 208.
