Estrangement from the Uchiha

Following Shisui’s apparent death, Itachi became increasingly hostile toward his clansmen, viewing their concern for the clan as narrow-minded and ungrateful. He defended Hiruzen’s leadership and regarded the Hokage as both a practitioner of the Will of Fire and a personal mentor 77.

When he returned to the Uchiha compound to confront Yashiro, he encountered Feng instead. Itachi attempted to extract information through Sharingan genjutsu, but Feng’s prepared counter briefly interrupted him before Feng activated Susanoo. Obito, who had already discussed parts of the planned massacre with Itachi, secretly observed the encounter 80.

After learning Feng’s identity, Itachi sided with the Anbu and accused him of betraying the village. He subsequently verified that Fugaku possessed the Mangekyō and reported Feng’s claims about additional Mangekyō users to Hiruzen. Fearing that multiple Susanoo could devastate Konoha, he accepted an intelligence-gathering assignment against Feng 82 84.

Expulsion and Defeat

At the clan assembly, Itachi opposed Feng becoming clan head. Feng publicly accused him of preparing to cooperate with Konoha and a masked outsider to exterminate the Uchiha, including his own parents. Itachi did not deny the accusation 87.

After Itachi declared that he had long despaired of being Uchiha, Feng expelled him from the clan and demanded both his Sharingan and the eye entrusted to him by Shisui. Itachi refused, believing that surrendering Mangekyō eyes to the clan would endanger Konoha. Feng then ordered Fugaku to subdue his son 88.

Itachi later attacked Feng with Amaterasu and fought him using Perfect Susanoo while Feng covered the evacuation of his followers. Although the Yata Mirror and Totsuka Blade helped him withstand direct attacks, Feng teleported behind his Susanoo and cut it across the waist. The blow collapsed Itachi’s defense and left him vomiting blood with his eyes bleeding heavily 90 91 92.

Feng continued attacking Konoha until Hiruzen agreed to surrender Itachi’s eyes. Itachi removed them himself; after Danzō intercepted them, Hiruzen ordered that they be handed to Feng’s clone 93.

Massacre and Flight

Later reports stated that Itachi stole Fugaku’s Mangekyō and joined Orochimaru and an unidentified Uchiha in massacring the clan members who had remained in Konoha. His victims included his parents. The majority who had departed with Feng survived 110 111.

Itachi fled with Sasuke rather than leaving him in Konoha while Danzō remained alive. Because Feng had exposed the conflict publicly, Sasuke knew why the massacre had occurred and grew to hate both Itachi and Konoha. Itachi nevertheless kept him close and repeatedly recaptured him whenever he tried to escape 267.

Confrontation with Izumi

After Konoha’s defeat, Itachi accompanied Obito, Zetsu, and Kisame to meet Feng. His group’s Mangekyō genjutsu triggered hidden Amaterasu countermeasures. Itachi escaped the flames by using his own Amaterasu to isolate them, followed by a Substitution Technique 205.

Izumi then insisted on fighting him over both the clan’s destruction and their former relationship. Her Fifth Gate prevented him from counterattacking, while her Sixth Gate forced him to summon Susanoo. When Kazue intervened to stop Izumi from attempting a potentially fatal escalation, Itachi withdrew his Susanoo rather than exploiting the interruption. Undercover Work and Sasuke’s Escape

Itachi continued supplying intelligence to Konoha from within Akatsuki. He warned Tsunade about Iwagakure and Kumogakure’s plans against Konoha and the Land of Whirlpools; Koharu and Homura corroborated his claim that he had served as Hiruzen’s undercover agent 237.

During a later visit to Konoha for Sasuke’s treatment, Sasuke attempted to escape through a suicidal leap into the Naka River. A disguised shadow clone restrained Itachi long enough to frustrate his rescue attempt. Finding Sasuke’s discarded forehead protector afterward convinced him that his brother had survived 268 269.

Itachi pursued Sasuke south, but his worsening illness and White Zetsu’s interference repeatedly delayed him. Once Sasuke reached Feng’s territory, border guards refused to return him and revealed that Feng had authorized the Uchiha to kill Itachi if possible. Unable to force the issue without risking retaliation, Itachi withdrew 271.

By the later Akatsuki–Feng negotiations, Itachi had defected from Akatsuki and returned to Konoha. His possession of Kotoamatsukami made Obito wary of confronting him and helped motivate Akatsuki to seek Feng’s cooperation 316.

Appearance

• Pronounced nasolabial folds: These deepen after Shisui’s apparent death and remain a conspicuous feature in later appearances 77 267.
• Sharingan: Initially possesses his own Mangekyō; later uses a mismatched configuration comprising Fugaku’s Amaterasu eye and Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami eye 90 205.

Personality

Itachi places Konoha above the Uchiha Clan and interprets resistance to the village as a failure to appreciate the Will of Fire. He fiercely defends Hiruzen, even when the Hokage accepts blame for the clan’s alienation. His disillusionment eventually develops into the belief that the Uchiha are a threat Konoha must eliminate 77 88.

His devotion to Sasuke is protective but controlling. He keeps his brother under close supervision, repeatedly prevents him from leaving, and insists that Sasuke has a mission whose outcome others must not determine. Sasuke experiences this treatment as imprisonment and ultimately risks his life to escape it 267 268 269 271.

Despite his outward composure, Itachi is vulnerable to reminders of his former attachments. Seeing Izumi unsettles him enough for Kisame to notice. During his travels, he repeatedly questions whether he regrets the massacre, but answers himself by insisting that he acted for the village and the greater good 207.

His combat judgment is considerably more adaptable than his personal convictions. Even Feng, who despises him, praises his improvised escape from Amaterasu 205.

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Itachi uses ocular genjutsu for interrogation and combat, supported by strong visual perception 80 208.
