Background / History

Orochimaru had just returned from an S-rank mission when Hiruzen Sarutobi brought him to meet Xuanhui, whom Hiruzen considered exceptionally promising. Though initially distant, Orochimaru helped Hiruzen teach the child chakra extraction and agreed to supervise his training for the morning. 3

At Ichiraku Ramen, Xuanhui's views on the meaning of life and his desire to pursue knowledge resonated with Orochimaru's own reflections on life’s fragility. Orochimaru accepted Xuanhui as his disciple after asking whether he truly had the resolve to become a ninja. 4

Xuanhui later introduced Orochimaru to a vast library containing modern scientific books. Fascinated by subjects including molecular biology and physics, Orochimaru began staying in the library to study and claimed Xuanhui as his disciple in front of Hiruzen. 5 15

After Xuanhui graduated, Orochimaru became his jōnin squad leader so that he would only need to lead Xuanhui rather than a full genin team. He took his disciple on increasingly dangerous missions, including an A-rank merchant escort that brought them into conflict with Kakuzu. 10 19 23

During the war against Hidden Rain, Orochimaru served alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. He trusted Xuanhui with intelligence work concerning Hanzo's poison, coordinated Konoha's counterattack, and worked with Tsunade to develop a toxin and antidote based on acquired enemy material. 34 38
