Background / History

Jiraiya is first encountered at the White Rabbit Tavern, where Orochimaru finds him passed out drunk among empty bottles during a mission with Xuanhui. Orochimaru urges his old friend to return to Konoha because Hidden Rain's expansion makes war unavoidable. Jiraiya had already received Hiruzen Sarutobi's order to prepare for the conflict, but hesitates over abandoning his travels and pursuit of the “Child of Prophecy.” 12 13

He joins Orochimaru and Xuanhui as an escort for a mineral caravan traveling through Kannabi Bridge. During the mission, Jiraiya teaches Xuanhui Fire Release: Dragon Flame Jutsu after recognizing that the boy's Sharingan, sensory talent, chakra reserves, and chakra-string control make him especially suited to it. He attempts to recruit Xuanhui as his own disciple, but Xuanhui refuses to betray Orochimaru. 14 15

When Kakuzu ambushes the caravan, Jiraiya fights beside Orochimaru and their summons. He uses his hair techniques, barriers, Fire Release, and Gamabunta to uncover Kakuzu's method of survival and destroy one of his masked hearts. The combined team forces Kakuzu into retreat. 19 20

Jiraiya later joins Tsunade and Orochimaru at the Hidden Rain front. The three confront Hanzo and survive his poison assault after a prolonged battle; Hanzo names them Konoha's Three Ninja before withdrawing. 39 40
